The Running Thread - 2016

I am going to have to reschedule my runs for the next week and a half. We are traveling to the in laws in Alabama for Christmas. I am hoping to get at least one run in while I am there but my plan is to get as many of my runs for the week in before we leave and after we get back. It's going to be a challenge but I think I can do it.

For anyone running or wanting to run Little Rock in March, the medal reveal is at 1:42ish. :)

These are some crazy medals!

I am actually thinking about adding this half to my schedule. My family is in Arkansas, and my mom was planning to visit us in Georgia around this time - but she has offered to pay for my airfare and hotel if I do the race as a visit, so I'm pretty sure it's happening :D Just need to remember to register before the end of December before the price goes up again!

ATTQOTD: Having a really hard time fitting it all in! I was supposed to get a longer one in last weekend, didn't due to back to back holiday parties, cold rain, xmas shopping, and lunch with my dad. This coming weekend we are now in Michigan (I'm from Atlanta), so not sure I'm going out this weekend either (zero temps and ice = nope). I'll try to get one in on the 26th when we get back, which I have off.

Work: 1
Holidays: 1
Winter: 1
Jacque: 0

:crazy2:

I did the half last year and it was lots of fun! I was going to wait until after the WDW marathon to register to see if I was up to doing another marathon but I think I am going to go ahead and register for the full this year! That huge spinner medal decided it for me lol! You have a great mom! Do they live in Little Rock? We are in Arkadelphia. :)

ATTQOTD: I am currently planning to run 10 miles both Sat and Sun, if my right glute feels up to it. After last nights run, I had a noticeable limp and pain that I had not experienced before. Sunday would be well after the boys are up and the presents opened.

Less than 4 weeks to Houston Marathon, and I am a little bothered by the pain. This was the lower mileage week for my plan, it is just going to be a lot lower then expected.

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)

Longest is a marathon and the shortest was probably just under 1 mile. I like my winter running but a few years ago I went out into some snow and wind. It wasn't terrible at first but after about a half mile the ground was really slick and the wind picked up and I just didn't feel safe so I turned around.

QOTD: What is the most useful running related thing you learned in 2016 and how did it change your running?

Mine isn't really a lesson per se but I started trail running this year and love it. It is so different than road running and while the road is still where I put in most of my miles the change in, well, everything, that comes with the trails is a welcome new thing to try.

QOTD: With Christmas this weekend and the new year the following weekend, what do you plan to do to get your runs in during this busy time of year?

We have a baby due in about a month so this year we are doing a laid back Christmas. No traveling, only going to one stop on Christmas, and not baking anything. I am doing a race on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve and will just treat the evening runs as I normally would.

QOTD: What is the most useful running related thing you learned in 2016 and how did it change your running?

Sticking with the training plan pays off big time. In years past I've had a bad habit of skipping a large percentage of runs on my plan. Completing a plan nearly as written this year brought much increased fitness. Shocking, right?

OTD: With Christmas this weekend and the new year the following weekend, what do you plan to do to get your runs in during this busy time of year?

Luckily this is a step back week on marathon training for me. Hoping to get 9 miles in Christmas Eve morning.

I'm not on a training plan right now, so just trying to maintain a base, but I should be able to get some runs in during the holidays as long as I get up early, and I'm already signed up for a New Years Eve run. I'm super jealous of all of you heading to Marathon weekend! I sure hope to be going in 2018, but I'm so broke right now, I can't even think about Dopey until I recover from the holidays...:sad2:

ATTQOTD: It'll just be me, DH, and our menagerie so my long run (going for 12-14) will be just like any other Saturday long run. And then some quiet holidays, with family tradition food on Christmas Eve and either takeout Chinese (tradition) or if we can find some nice king crab that'll be an easy, yet special, meal.

Awesome! I have heard great things about the race, and my family lives in Fort Smith so it's a semi-convenient excuse to make a trip :) And I definitely have a great mom!

A proper breakfast is always special...love that meal. Can't beat a breakfast done right.

I love breakfast too. Blueberry pancakes are my favorite. Not the kind with the blueberry syrup on top, blueberries mixed inside the batter. So yummy!

And yes Mike, you are right, it will hurt but I think I will have a smile on my face the whole time. It will be on the treadmill for a while but better than nothing.

QOTD: I have Friday and Monday off from work so I will try to hit the gym for the elliptical those days. Saturday and Sunday I will do the bike at home when time allows.

ATTQOTD: So I LOVE Christmas and as a family we tend to do it up quite a bit. Luckily I have started my taper so only 35 miles this week, 20 of those miles will be complete from runs earlier in the week. I will have a 15 miler on Saturday, which I will knock out before the family wakes up. No run on Sunday. If I tried my wife would burn my running shoes. Of course I would get the last laugh since I have at least 4 other pairs waiting to come out of the box in the basement! :)

ATTQOTD: I have a c9 jacket from Target that I wear when the temps dip below 25 degrees. It's fleece lined with a somewhat water resistant outside (good for snow, but not rain), and it has zippered pockets. I also like that it doesn't have thumbholes, which I find to be annoying.

My jacket is this brand as well. I don't wear it unless it is REALLY cold. I also have a lightweight running jacket from Brooks that I wear in the rain.

QOTD: Does it bother you if someone calls you a jogger (or reference running as jogging)?

I've never had anyone call me that. As long as they said it in a non-snarky tone, I don't think I'd care.

Bonus QOTD (BQOTD): What is the worse thing a coach or similar type role has said to you?

I have never had a coach. I don't remember anything specific, but I used to get in trouble in PE for walking when I was supposed to be running. Ironic now, considering that's a totally reasonable training method and the only one I use now.

It's just that I hear "jogger" and this is what comes to mind;

Haha! Me too! Does anyone really use the word "jog" any more?

The first time I walked into one of my local stores and mentioned I was interested in trying on shoes the clerk said very loudly " you don't look like a runner"...

That is horrible! I have never been into a running store where the people were not 100% helpful and supportive.

THIS! I'm excited to do this too. Just a little gesture to brighten someone's day. Plus even if they don't drink coffee, there other things at Starbucks. I just discovered the snickerdoodle white chocolate hot chocolate. YUM!

FOR REAL.

I was getting my volunteer shirt for my Expo/Packet Pick-Up shift and I told the gentleman handing out shirts what size I wanted. His response - "Are you sure? You must like your shirts real tight!" WTFEver, dude.

Wow. What is wrong with these people?!

QOTD: Do you track steps? If so what do you do with that information? Do you have a goal?

I do. I have a Fitbit and my goal is set at 10,000. I don't always make it, but I keep it set that way.

Yes, only because my health insurance is cheaper if I do. Currently I need 100,000 steps per month but it's going up to 150,000 per month in 2017. Very easy to achieve for a runner. :teeth:

EDIT: I use the built-in step tracking on my iPhone (via the Health app) and that dumps my steps into the FitBit app, which syncs with my employee health website...whew!

I wish I had this kind of opportunity!

ATTQOTD: I do wear a fitbit, but am losing my interest in step counting as I run more. It is really scary how sedentary I can be at work though. I wish my fitbit would nudge me every hour to get up and walk around.

I am scheduled to run 8 miles this weekend (my longest ever!), but the HIGH on Saturday is -1F. I love my treadmill, but even I am a little nervous about running that long on the 'mill.

My Fitbit actually does. If I don't get 250 steps per hour, it buzzes. I am very sedentary at work too, so it's really helpful!

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)

I'm not sure what the shortest is. Maybe a mile? The longest was 14.5 miles, which was a training run for the 2014 Princess Half.

QOTD: With Christmas this weekend and the new year the following weekend, what do you plan to do to get your runs in during this busy time of year?

I'm trying really hard. My hotel has a gym with a treadmill, so I'm just trying my best to make it happen.

QOTD:

ATTQOTD: Well, I had a plan to make sure I would get them in, but since I am still dealing with this cold that continues to get worse I'm just hoping to run again soon. I have been coughing all night long and did not get a good night of sleep. The plan was to do my long runs on Fridays and then a recovery run on Saturday, with Sunday being a normal rest day. However, running with this cold just isn't going to happen. I think I am admitting defeat on my January marathon.

Probably a dumb question, but have you gone to a PCP or Urgent care? a cold this long in someone healthy sounds a lot like rule out pneumonia.

Ya Scott I'm thinking jumping right out into the cold snowy icy New England winter isn't exactly the greatest idea for your first few runs after surgery...stick to that treadmill for a while and keep safe.
