The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I don't think I'd be interested in running camp. While they say they cater to all levels, I have my doubts about how "all" that really is, and I'm pretty slow. :) Plus I'm a pretty big introvert who has worked at home for the past just about 17 years. It is a huge deal for me that I am going to a running group and socializing with people after the group run two days a week. I don't think I could handle going away to a camp. :)

QOTD: As kids its likely at some point you attended summer camp or something similar. Would you be interested in attending a running camp for adults?

I did running camp through my local running store a couple of summers (and one autumn) but it was not a traditional sleepaway camp. We met at 5:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then met up early Sunday for a long run. The coaching was tailored to fitness level and I worked harder for our coaches than I do on my own. I trimmed off over 2 min/mile on my 5K time and more off my 10K pace. Sadly, the store stopped doing it because it was a huge commitment for the coaches, which is understandable. But I really miss it because I probably won't see those times again (I'm not competitive until I think someone is watching me).

As for a traditional camp, nope. No way.

ATTQOTD: No not happening lol! I am EXTREMELY shy and school was just an awful experience for me so there was no way I went to camp. Sadly, I have not really made much progress overcoming that shyness in the 30 years since I graduated lol. Hopefully when I get a chance to meet some of you all at races I will be able to talk! :)

I think those running camps sound like a lot of fun! I'm definitely on the slow side so I'd want to make sure they are cool with that before I sign up. But given finances, vacation time, etc., it's probably not in the books for me any time soon. I read about a running cruise in Alaska, that would probably be my deal running vacation! https://www.runningcruise.com/package/alaska-2017/

I just scored a free winter ear warmer headband courtesy of Strava! :) I got an email yesterday that Strava Premium members got a $30 gift card to Lululemon. I "pay" for my Strava Premium account by redeeming my My New Balance points for Strava Premium codes. I had been looking for a cheaper ear warmer headband and was going to get a Saucony one or something, but since you can't buy much else at Lululemon with only $30, I just bit the bullet and got the $28 one from there. :D

When I'm at home I am happy to be by myself, saying nothing, for hours on end. But before races I like being with people.
I love talking to strangers and don't like standing around alone with no one to talk to. Being alone with my thoughts in the corral is what causes me to start questioning all of my abilities/race plan/strategy. If anyone sees me at Tink or W&D this year...PLEASE TALK TO ME!!
Or just come stand by me and every like 10 minutes say "you'll be fine" :) I'll just assume you are someone from here.

Just be happy you don't have to play them every year while trying to run the toss dive, over, and over, and over again! But, hey we have a new OC now, maybe we will try that new things all the other schools do... what do they call it??? Oh a PASS!!!

I will now refer to LSU as "UW South" since you guys have two of our former coordinators (Aranda and now Canada) (I kid... I kid...). If you want to know what Canada is capable of with NFL talent and his own gameplan, watch this:

One of my favorite formations was the "Barge" shown at 1:53 in the video. Two RBs, seven OL, and 2 TEs. It worked quite well for us that year with all the beef up front. We pulled it out a ton in that game so watch for it several times and all the different wrinkles it afforded us.

Running camp, probably not. I have done triathlon camp a couple of times though and it is a lot of fun...I think the multisport aspect lends itself well to a camp environment as you can get out and do different activities. Also it is a lot of fun to ride with a group. Clinics and drinking fill the evening sessions :drinking1

Hmm, I'm Strava Premium but didn't receive anything...I just ordered bike shorts from lulu too

Shoes: I have 2 pairs of Altra Olympus original versions that I've been rotating through. I bought 4 pairs in the spring of 2015, 3 gray and 1 purple, so I've been using the purple sparingly since last fall and they only have 186.2 miles on them right now. I'm currently on pair 2 of the gray ones and it's probably about time to swap them out. They have 271.1 miles and the tread is getting pretty worn at the ball and starting to wear through to the black in some places (i.e. the colored layer of tread is worn away and I can see the black part underneath).

I need to do the process of finding out what to wear next. The Olympus is in their trail line of shoes, but the 1.0 model was marketed as being good for hard trails or roads. I decided to give them a try because at the time I was eager to try out Altras due to the shape/width of my foot, and I didn't like the colors of the Paradigm 1.0 model (the road shoe line), and I got a GREAT deal on those pairs of the Olympus, which is why I bought 4 pairs. They are $150 shoes and I got all the gray ones for $29.88 each and the purple ones for $45. But now I've been running in these 1.0 versions for almost 2 years now, and both the Olympus and the Paradigm have been through 1.5 and 2.0 versions. I would bet good money they'll be to 2.5 by the time I finish out these last 2 pairs. :) The Olympus no longer mentions road in the ideal uses, so I'm guessing I'll make the switch over to the Paradigm. I've wanted to try out the Torins, too, for shorter runs, but just haven't picked up a pair.
My husband solely runs in the Torins. He loves them even for long distances. He usually picks them up at jackrabbit.com for a significant discount

I never went to any summer camps or anything as a kid. Never wanted to either. That wasn't really a big thing where I'm from.

As for a running camp I've kind done similar things already with football camps in high school as well as speed and agility camps. I would be open to doing something like that possibly.

QOTD: I actually went to cross-country camp when I was in high school -- at Colby College in Maine. Not sure I would devote my limited travel time/budget to a similar camp as an adult. But I will say that I loved, loved my traditional summer camp on a lake in NH, and they offer a few family or women's weekend options in late summer/early fall, and I am somewhat tempted!

Upon reflection: I'm pretty sure I'm a "camp person"
I was a Space camper. I've done summer camps, church camps, sport camps, girl scout camps, dance camps, even did one of those Wilderness Voyager canoe and hike camps in Quebec. I did a trip to New Zealand and we camped with Aboriginals. Staying overnight places was my fave. Hmmm...or maybe my parents just wanted me out of the house?
I want to go "glamping" so badly but just haven't found the opportunity. I'd do a sleepover ragnar in a heart beat if I had a little more confidence that my running times would be helpful to the group.

Who wants to come camping with me at the Wilderness Lodge campground?

I did used to go to Girl Scout camp (2 years in 5th and 6th grade) and basketball camps growing up. A few regular basketball skills type camps when I was in elementary school and then All-Star/college recruitment type camps when I was in high school, but I think I have gotten even more introverted as I have gotten older. :)

Would be interested in a seminar-type learning session. I know BAA has some clinics a few hours away from me, but I'm not willing to drive that far,

For all those having to run in the cold & want extra cheap heating devices to keep hands warm or put in pockets or whatever, use to thaw something for a little while as you go - -
make rice packs to heat up. I have some we sewed up with fabric we just dug back out for winter, but here's a quick article on using old socks, fill with rice, tie up, microwave for 60-90 sec (keep an eye on). https://runnersconnect.net/running-tips/forgot-to-pack-heat-ive-got-you-covered/

ATTQOTD: I'm with @roxymama I'm a total camp person. I did a few church and dance camps growing up, and loved them so running camp sounds fun too! I'm a weird kind of shy where I really love meeting new people, and learning about them. But I have a hard time and get really shy when hanging out with people I "kind of know." If friendships stay on a superficial limited level, I run out of things to say and feel self conscious. I also enjoy solitude sometimes, especially as an adult, so I would want a running camp to respect that too. . . . that being said, I really don't think I would use vacation funds for one. Cool idea though!

I'm not seeing this gift card offer anywhere. Little help? :D
