The Running Thread - 2016

I finished my first ever aqua jogging session. It's no joke. I spent 72 minutes in the water (what I would run an easy 8 miles in), and I feel like I got more of a workout than actually running an easy 8 miler.

Oh that looks like hurts, but I hope it helps you! Is Graston like a good a sort of pain when it's done?

It's kinda like foam rolling on steroids. Even while he was doing it I could feel areas which had adhesion clear up. The tool was running more smoothly over them. It really didn't hurt that bad while he was doing it. I just bruise easily by nature and my pale skin really shows them off.

There were a few Half Marathon slots open for WDW last week and it was such a battle not to just jump in!! Allegiant is cheap, right? I've got a friend from my running group who is doing Dopey this year and I saw her in Target today. I wanted to ask if I could just ride in her backseat and then sleep on the floor at Pop Century. I withstood the temptation because it seemed a little much... even if I offered to share gas money. There are lots of bad comedic movies based on that sort of theme.

Oh my gosh, glad you are okay! What a jerk driver, what if you had been a little kid, would he have chewed out and/or ran them over too. Some people I just don't get! Good reminder though to be extra careful!

Yeah, the guy really was a jerk about the situation, but he had a point. It was pretty dumb and I am lucky I did not get seriously hurt from the fall, let alone getting backed over by a car. I should have never tried to zip behind, I know better than that.

So remember when I said that yesterday's race was just a shakedown run in preparation for the half at WDW? Apparently my legs didn't get the message, as I PR'd by 11 minutes! First 13.1 I've ever completed in 3 hours exactly. I've been riding the high all night and this morning. I am set for Disney!

Congratulations! Some times the no pressure, no goal runs are the best.

Kona Ironman is on NBC and man they get me every year. Usually always has me tearing up at some point and today is no different. NBC does a great job with the show and highlighting just a few of all the amazing athletes.

My friend told me her boyfriend gets invited every year to Kona and I was like "what's that?" Even after she explained it, I had no idea how big of a deal it was until this board.

Congrats!! A PR is awesome and you are ready for Disney!

Thanks guys. I went to PT on Thursday and they did Graston. The only other time I dealt with ITBS that was the best treatment. I've been resting since Wednesday. PT said I should aqua jog this weekend, so I'm off to look silly at the Y. This blooming bruise from GT just adds to the effect. View attachment 209660

I've been doing ART massages since before I got hurt - and man, they feel like my massage therapist is taking a baseball bat to certain parts of my body. He'll literally see me wincing/tearing up in pain, tell me to count to 10 and then he's going to start again. But I always feel SO amazing afterwards!

But I also LOOK like he's taken a baseball bat to my legs and thighs afterwards, so I'm with you on the bruising.

Congratulations @LSUlakes!

Now that I got that out of the way I am probably going to embarrass myself here. I thought your wife was already pregnant. When you were planning your most recent trip, that you just got back from, weren't you talking about how she would be pregnant, and uncomfortable, on that trip or am I having a blonde moment here?

It was possible for her to be during the trip, but it didn't happen before hand. So, in my planning stages, I was trying to figure out how to approach the trip if that was the case. I am currently working on talking her into a trip this spring, so that information may be handy if I am successful!

QOTD: What do you like in a running jacket? What do you dislike? Which lines are your favorite and why?

ATTQOTD: I have a running jacket, but don't actually use it for running as I've never felt it was cold enough to run with it. It's more of a souvenir from a race I ran. It's also a highly debatable topic for that particular race because the color scheme changes every year and some years the colors are really bad.

I'm like you, I have a running jacket but don't wear it for running. I got one for the WDW half last year. I like wearing it and showing that I ran a half. It says "it takes character to run a half" on the back.

I hate running in a jacket. Almost all of the ones I've used make me feel like I'm wearing a trash bag and running in a sauna. The only one I've found which I can run in for a decent amount of time is from Brooks. I don't know the model number (it's in Erbil so I can't look it up), but it has large vents on the back and under the arms which help to keep the heat and moisture buildup to a minimum. Most of my running jackets, like @LSUlakes, are souvenirs from big races (Comrades, IMFL, Texas Marathon Challenge). I wear them around to stay warm but never to run.

#1 thing I like is the ability to push up the sleeves. I feel trapped if I can't get the sleeves up to at least below my elbow.
#2 I like it to be form fitting and not too baggy. Mostly because of #3.
#3 I like the pockets to be on the side, and not like a kangaroo pouch on the front. Reason is that if I put my phone in my pocket...I like it against my side or hip and not sagging down low, banging against my legs/nether regions. (TMI?)

I almost never run in a jacket. I do have one for rain. It's very lightweight and that's important and it has quite a few interior pockets to hold things and hopefully keep them dry.

Congrats!!! Woo hoo!!!!

I never run in a running jacket. A lot of the shirts I wear can barely keep up with the moisture from my sweating, there's now way a jacket would be able to.

This is the one running jacket that I have: the Utopia Thermal Hoodie by Brooks (they don't seem to make it anymore). I only use this when it's REALLY cold out (so I'll be using it this week ). Features that I like: thicker fabric that keeps me warm, I can layer under it, it's long enough to cover my butt (oh no, cold butt conversation returns! :rotfl2:), it has pockets so I can store my phone/fuel, it has thumbholes to help keep my hands warm, when fully zipped it covers my neck, and the back of the hood has a ponytail hole. I bought this a little over 2 years ago for a little less than $100 and have only used it a handful of times, but with the weather we get in Ohio, it was definitely a worthwhile purchase. It's still in great shape. :thumbsup2 I also have the thermal tights from this same line and highly recommend those as well.
