The Running Thread - 2016

Runner's Knee is the common term for patellofemoral pain. That's pain on top of the kneecap at the meeting with the thigh, not the bottom of the kneecap near the shin. It also tends to do the opposite of what was reported: no pain on walking and increasing during running. Not sure what @preciouspups has, but it doesn't sound like the Runner's Knee I've been fighting.

Ok well ignore my post then. Sorry.

So I have this pain in my knee. Only not my knee. It is the spot right in front of the kneecap, just before the shin. I don't even know what it is called to look up a diagnosis on the interwebz. LOL! It started hurting after I bent over the other day and it hurts when I walk, but not when I run.
You might want to look into Patellar Tendonitis. https://runnersconnect.net/running-injury-prevention/patellar-tendonitis-running/

There is a tendon that connect the kneecap to the top of the shin. It can get inflamed. When I've had issues with it in the past my PT has recommended a patella strap. http://www.runningwarehouse.com/CEP_Rx_Patellar_Tendon_Strap/descpage-CEPTS.html

ATTQOTD: I rarely wear a running jacket as I tend to run hot (I have the sauna problem someone else mentioned), but I like the one I have because the sleeves zip off to turn it into a vest. I've probably worn it as a vest more than a jacket. It's very thin and good for some water/wind resistance.

QOTD: What do you like in a running jacket? What do you dislike? Which lines are your favorite and why?

No running jacket for me. Too much "overhead". I savor every ounce that I don't have to bring along with me! I, like some others do like to wear them casually.

I forgot to mention some other interesting running news for me. When I was perusing the New Balance web site for my free shoes, I came across their wear tester page. I've signed up with other shoe companies with no luck. NB is a little different. Once you sign up, you can see the available tests then ask to join specific ones that interest you. Within a couple of days, I was accepted. I got my test shoes today. I don't get to keep them, but I get to put 80-100+ miles on them for the next month which makes me happy. Love getting to run in free shoes.

If anyone is interested. Here is their product testing page. product.testing.newbalance.com

That sounds pretty awesome. What type of tests are available?

ATTQOTD: I don't have a heavy running jacket as it doesn't get that cold here. I do have lots of quarter zip running tops I layer over tanks or shirts. But I mostly wear them to work lol. I have a Brooks hoodie that I love that I usually wear for running. It has a hood (obviously) and thumb holes. :)

I always feel bad for the volunteers during cold races, too, and make sure to give out extra thanks. :)

You should consider giving them gift cards, too, in addition to thanks, right @Keels?*

New article today from wired about a Nike team trying for the 2 hour marathon!
https://www.wired.com/2016/12/nike-two-hour-marathon/?mbid=social_twitter

I saw that too. I hope they're able to do it. A sub-2 marathon and a sub-7:30 Ironman are two targets really pushing the limits of endurance sports. The running guys have been able to hit the 11:30-11:40 range for 100 miles, and I'm not sure how much lower they can go.

*for those who missed the earlier discussion, it's common in Ironman races for the competitors to give gift cards (Starbucks, Amazon, etc.) to the volunteers who help them in transition. @Keels and I are bringing the custom to Disney and will be handing out cards to volunteers during Dopey this year.

I think this might be it! My doctor likes it when I at least try the at home solutions before comng in. He hates to charge me just to tell me ice and advil. LOL! I iced last night and only had one moment this morning when it hurt - when I put weight on that leg while getting dressed. I will ice again this morning after yoga. I'm not sure how I would do those squats though. I don't have an inclined board at home or at the gym.

I was thinking the same as what IamTike said on Patellar Tendonitis. I developed a case of it 4 or so years ago from my shin getting inflamed from running in too tight of shoes, it's pretty much gone now but it does get inflamed sometime. What helps me is wearing a compression sleeve for my shin & massaging around that area under the knee.

To each their own, but volunteering is all about giving time & not getting stuff, so when you start handing out cards, that defeats the purpose of volunteering. And, so I give my water hander outer a gift card, but not the other person right by them, or what about all the marching band kids out there, you aren't going to hand them all one. Or I went to medical after the marathon last year, I had 4 girls all helping me, do they all get one or do I pick & choose, no they were volunteering cause they want too or maybe they needed some check off on a volunteer thing they needed to do. Again to each their own, but sorry it seems strange to hand out goodies for race volunteering.

JACKETS - I have a skirt sport jacket that goes over all other layers, it's mostly water proof, wind resistant, and pretty form fitting. I like them tighter so wind & cold area doesn't get through, it's easy to unzip though if I need to let air in. It has thumb holes but I only use those If I'm not wearing gloves/mittens. It has a hood too which I use a lot. I actually have 2, 1 is stored as backup for when the current one wears out, I like it so much!

I agree that volunteering is about giving your time and energy to do something for a race/event/charity/whatever. Never said it wasn't. I happen to believe, as does @Keels and as do many triathletes, that thanking the volunteers can be more than just a simple thank you. If you think it's strange to thank a stranger for volunteering to help you by giving them a small token of appreciation, then don't. Those of us who do think it's a nice gesture and spreads some goodness will continue to do so.

QOTD: Does it bother you if someone calls you a jogger (or reference running as jogging)?

ATTQOTD: It is definitely not my favorite description to hear, but I have been told worse things.

Bonus QOTD (BQOTD): What is the worse thing a coach or similar type role has said to you?

ATTBQOTD: In high school during a basketball game I sprained my ankle during a game. I probably should not have been playing as I had just started feeling well enough from "mono" and my Dr told me to sit out for the remainder of the season. However it was my Sr year, and I not playing was not something I was open to. (For those who haven't had mono, long after the symptoms are gone, your body is still weak for a good while. For this reason, the Dr. didn't want me to play as it increased odds of a injury. Those doctors are smart..) Well it was half time and my ankle is turning all king of wonderful shades of blue and black. The trainer is taping it so I can play in the second half and we are getting our butts kicked and during the halftime chewing events, my coach turns his attention to me and says "And over here, we got tall for nothing barely moving up and down the court." I was like, well this is going well! I get a good laugh out of it now, but it kinda sucked at the time.

If I was a volunteer it would make me feel awkward, plus I can see many getting thrown out as not everyone uses Starbucks or whatever you may choose to hand out. Once it's a monetary value it's not a small token it's money, which feeds into the give me society that is all ready a problem of me me me & takes away from the volunteer giving. As I said to each their own, it's just not something I think is fitting for race volunteering.
