The Running Thread - 2016

See now before a football game when I played I preferred the quiet. It helped me focus on the task at hand. A Disney race is a bit different than a football game at least for me.
At WDW, once the race starts I mingle and talk to others on the course. The headphones come off a great deal during the race itself. In the corrals, my introversion kicks in and I need my space. Since I can't get it physically, I need it mentally.

YES, so very much this! ^

In general, I get very overwhlemed by too much noise/visual stimulation/ crowds, so rD races are a real challenge. The more I do, the better I get at tuning out, but it's still there. I'm giving the full another shot, but if I feel toward humanity again the way I felt at mile 17 this year, this may be my last, lol!

I'm not ready for this! It's supposed to be 19F, feels like 9F, tomorrow morning at the time of our group run. :worried: :cold:

You should be excited about that. I'm looking at an air temp around 6 or 7 when I'm going to try to get my run in before the snow tomorrow. The wind will be a relative non-factor, but still very cold tomorrow.

I feel you. We are delaying the start of our rD group training run tomorrow until 9am so the temps can climb a bit. By 9am the wind chill is supposed to be up to 15 degrees. It's not supposed to climb much over 20 tomorrow around here (wind chill temp). Gonna have to layer up.

I dn't mind really cold days - I just hate 20+ MPH wind on those days. The wind makes the cold runs a lot more dangerous.

Stay warm everyone! The wind chill temp for us was 18 degrees yesterday, and I thought I was dying. I'm not ready for this cold!!

I like having music, announcers, and all the hoopla before a race. It helps get me pumped up. Peace and quiet would drive me nuts. Everyone has their own preferences though.
Me too, I like all the hoopla!

Good Luck. I ran in 7 degrees this morning (luckily no wind really), my eyelashes had frost which was fine, but my toes froze bad today. All of sudden my right leg felt terrible, a first as far as I can remember, well I think my toes were so numb that it radiated up so I stopped and wiggled my toes out & circulation was better and my leg came back alive, very weird. So, just keep wiggling your toes if they start to feel numb at all:)

Yes the wind can be killer. I worked out inside yesterday cause the wind gusts were just too bad for the temps for me, but today there wasn't really much wind so 7 degrees was doable, not fun but doable & I only did 4 miles.

I was finishing the 5K at DLH this year (as Disgust - we were all characters from Inside Out), and her ******* self goes "Here comes Disgust - and man, she looks disgusting finishing the 5K!" ... I wanted to punch her.

WHAT?!

When Carissa isn't the main person, she's fine - that's why she doesn't stand out when she's with Rudy, etc. But when she's the lead? Yikes. No.

How weird. Maybe that's why she doesn't bug me. I only ever run in Florida.

What?! And Disney prefers THIS to Rudy? How? Why??????

Whoops on the non-multi quote...I posted the other before I went back and read this. Lol.

Agreed. How could they think she's better than Rudy?

Just got an email about a hot cocoa run next weekend with my local running store. I was all set to sign up until I realized it is going to be 20 and possibly snowing. Do I need free cocoa and waffles that much?
You said free cocoa and waffles?

Been there, fought that, wish there was a miracle fix. You are doing everything that I did in the past, especially working on those gluteus medius exercises. Are you thinking of doing any running between now and the race? If so, I would potentially re-evaluate that. Get it as healed as possible before race day.
There are some bands/sleeves you can use but I don't know how effective they would be if you are in a lot of pain from it. These are some on running warehouse. I've used the Pro-Tec but that was primarily after healing. Hope you can get it feeling better but I think Seashore is pretty willing to work with you if you can't go. Good luck!

I'm really sorry, but speaking as someone who did battle with ITBS, there simply is no quick fix. :( The best thing to do is to not run. I pushed through the pain to race and it was disastrous; agonizing pain and set back recovery by months. So I can't in any way recommend it if the pain is already present. I did find an ITB strap to be helpful in keeping the pain away, but only once pain was gone for long time and I resumed running; it did nothing while pain was already present.
Rest was the best thing for me when my IT Band was mad. I also figured out that I needed to replace the orthodics I was using.

Thanks guys. I went to PT on Thursday and they did Graston. The only other time I dealt with ITBS that was the best treatment. I've been resting since Wednesday. PT said I should aqua jog this weekend, so I'm off to look silly at the Y. This blooming bruise from GT just adds to the effect. IMG_5823.JPG

I made it through my run group without any frostbite. :) It was 19F and while the wind was not as strong as predicted, so it wasn't down to "feels like" 8F like in the forecast, it was still quite chilly especially on the way back (we do an out and back on Saturdays) because the road we run on runs alongside a river and the wind was coming off the river in your face on the way back.

I was running all alone because my slow pace buddy did not come today, so I was trying to sing while running, as the coach I was running with on Wednesday recommended to sing out loud when running alone to help get used to talking while running like we usually do when we're in groups or pairs. The only thing I could think of to sing was 99 bottles of beer, though, and I kept losing track of what beer I was on. :drinking1At one point on the way back, my left side of my face was going numb and I was having trouble forming my words, and my first thought was, "Am I having a stroke? No I guess this is just the wind freezing me..." :o

So lots of you are talking weather. This morning I got in my 15 miles because tomorrow we are supposed to get 10-12 inches of snow... That is a lot for mid-Michigan. Might have been better to wait, strap on the Yak-trax's and run tomorrow. We did get about an inch or two last night and that is enough to cover ice patches and tripping hazards. I decided to simply circle the neighborhoods in my area so I could stay on sidewalks - because that would be safer...

I was enjoying the light snow fall, listening to xmas music and the very brisk air. There was a car blocking the sidewalk; it was also running. I went onto the driveway between the sidewalk and road and picked up the pace so I would not get backed over. In a split second, as I placed my left foot and hit ice, I went donkey over tea kettle hitting the ground hard!

I saw stars! And then looking up at the back of the car thought please don't run me over! Saw brake lights thank goodness. The driver got out. I like to say he asked if I was ok and then invited me into his house to collect my self and make sure I am ok. But instead he immediately began yelling! I did not catch it all but it included running is stupid, as was I, that he could have killed me, etc.

To stunned to argue I got up brushed myself off and said merry Christmas and limped off. I am sure I just added a story to his list. Moral: don't try to zip behind a car in a driveway that is running and especially if the ground is slippery!

Did finish my 15 though, so I can enjoy sledding with the girls tomorrow.

Crazy! Glad you were fine though and able to finish the run. I had a car honk at me and yell today too...my egregious sin? Crossing the road at a green light.

Oh that looks like hurts, but I hope it helps you! Is Graston like a good a sort of pain when it's done?

Oh my gosh, glad you are okay! What a jerk driver, what if you had been a little kid, would he have chewed out and/or ran them over too. Some people I just don't get! Good reminder though to be extra careful!
