The Running Thread - 2016

15 degrees? NOPE. I don't even get out of bed if it's not at least 30 degrees outside.

We're about to get our coldest temps in the past two years here starting tomorrow through Friday/early Saturday. And, well, cold is my kryptonite - I don't like it in general, I definitely don't like it for running and there's really nothing I can do to acclimate myself to it because it really is fleeting here.

So, I doubled up on my runs yesterday and today. I'm going to do a longish run tomorrow while it's still in the 50s and then I'll do my long run on Sunday when it's back to a respectable temperature.

If it were a race? I'd stick it out and layer a bunch of stuff including a base-layer funnel-neck hoodie to cover my mouth so I'm not breathing in cold air (that's where the wheels fall off for me in the cold - breathing in cold air, coughing, throat hurts, etc.). But training-wise, I'll work around it as best I can.

I usually look at the weather about 10 days out. The weather app on my phone is my go to because it provides hour by hour temps.

@camaker I am running the Durham 13.1 on Saturday and it looks like it might be a very cold start! Not super excited about the cold but hoping that a mile in, the temp won't be an issue or at least less of one.

Good luck and have fun with the race! I'd love to be out there with you, but every time I check the forecast it's a little colder at race start. It's forecast at 23 degrees right now and I'm with @Keels when it starts to get that cold! I'll wait and do my 12 miles in the afternoon when it's a balmy 42-44.

QOTD: I don't worry about the weather before a race really. As long as I am not injured I will run the race regardless of weather so why bother stressing about it. The weather people are usually wrong so watching it that far out makes no sense. I only watch the weather for one reason, I have a secret crush on my local weather girl.:love:

I wouldn't say I stress about it, but I do keep an eye on it when my race gets close. I want to make sure I have the right clothes, especially if I'm traveling for the race.

That is some crazy stuff. I have only done one trail race of 5 miles. It started at 9PM though which made it interesting. The race had a lot of folks on it and the path was well marked. Glad she was found safe. I would be freaking out.

Random thought about this situation. Lets say you did get lost and something happened to you. Would someone you know take your GPS watch and load up the last activity to see how you got from point A to B? That would be a really weird thing to look up. Especially with some of the stuff the watched do as far as keeping track of HR and other things... I would be really odd. Ok that's enough of that kind of thinking.

QOTD: Today maybe you could tells us first about a special holiday... Something great that happened, something special this year or a planned event. It doesn't have to be running related; family/friend stories are totally welcome.

ATTQOTD: A special holiday for us like many is Christmas for many of the obvious reasons. But one part that makes is special for us is when we head over to my dads house. We cook a big seafood gumbo, exchange gifts, and then as the sun sets we have a large bonfire and pop fireworks. It's one of those events that bring my back to my childhood and many great memories. Something that was great and special was being fortunate enough to make two WDW trips in 2016. ( I really need to get to work on that trip report) And to add in a running portion, to start off 2017 we are heading to Houston to visit some friends and me and a buddy are going to run the Houston Marathon. Although he is much faster than I am, we both seem to be heading to this thing unprepared. Looking forward to the challenge anyway. Also have been given a green light to look up a late spring early summer marathon trip or if that doesn't work out another trip to WDW. Speaking of WDW, I may already have a room paid for in April, but im not counting on it at this time.

Also, next week I could potentially have some exciting news to share with the running community on this board. Lots to look forward to and be thankful for!

ATTQOTD:
A special holiday in my family is always Christmas. Probably for many of the same reasons of you all who also celebrate it. My children still get caught up in the magic of Santa and the Elf on the Shelf; but also shopping for a few gifts from the Angel Tree at the mall, treats and of course "the feast" as my youngest refers to it. My wife and I really work hard to keep this special and memorable for them. Really looking forward to it this year.

Additionally we will be surprising the girls with a trip to WDW this Christmas. They think I am going alone to Marathon Weekend. But we have turned it into a small vacation. We will surprise them by wrapping the magic bands to be opened on Christmas morning. Very excited!

We always have Christmas early because of schedules and other conflicts during the actual season. This year we are all meeting at Disney on the 28th, so we had our "Christmas" earlier than ever this past weekend. The primary gift for my nieces and nephews this year is the trip and their tickets to Disney. Here's a picture from the festivities:

I'm pretty excited to be spending the Holidays with this bunch (Unfortunately, McFly has to stay home :guilty:).

That is indeed very exciting. The excitement you will see on their faces when they see the magic bands will be priceless!

ATTQOTD: I was supposed to have a "little turkey" back in 2012 but my kiddo decided to greet the world early and I ended up going into labor on 10/30. She took her time and waited until 4am on Halloween to have her first birthday and although she had to spend some time in her lil incubator, she was perfect. I was never a Halloween person (I like cute, not scary.) But for her second birthday we traveled WDW for Halloween and now I'm obsessed with all Disney Halloween stuff! Last year we took her for marathon weekend and all the Christmas decorations were up until the end of our trip and WE LOVED IT! So this coming year I am dreaming up a trip in the fall that bridges both Halloween and Christmas...and running :) It's funny how I could care less about Halloween before and now I have Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas all smashed up together as my fave time of year because my kiddo is just non-stop excited for three straight months :)

We are a Christmas family, and for the last 15 years my wife and I have hosted Christmas at our house. We have about 40 friends and family from all over the country make their way to our home for the season. Some come for only a few days, while others come for as long as two weeks. We have a pretty big home, so we can accommodate everyone without too much difficulty. But the time together is just amazing.

My wife and I spend the better part of a month getting everything ready. I am like Clark Griswold - I want everything to be perfect for the family when they arrive. Tons of lights outside, 50 bins of decorations inside. Four Christmas trees this year (we usually only have 3). We also host the neighborhood Christmas party every year - it is this Saturday. We should have everything ready by then - fingers crossed.

You know that you are doing things right when even the kids say that they don't think about the presents - they just can't wait to get together with everyone. This is our special time of the year together. This is the time when I feel the most blessed. So many people in our lives who love us, and who we love, all together to share a part of our lives with one another each year. I could gush on and on and not come close to conveying how special this time of the year is to us. Great question.

Merry Christmas!

I guess my special holiday is Christmas because it my favorite. We don't do anything out of the ordinary. Everyone comes to our house, we have dinner, open gifts, etc. This year isn't going to be the easiest because it's the first Christmas without my grandma. She was like our family leader. She bought everyone gifts because she thought everyone should open something rather than just getting an envelope of money.
