The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and 2016 turned out to be quite good in the HP department. We took our first trip to Universal in February and it was so fun to be immersed in that world. My (almost) 11 year old and I finished the series this year too. I started reading book one to him about 2 1/2 years ago and we took our time (read different books in between the HP ones) because I wanted him to be a bit older as we got to the later books. It was a really special experience. We also saw movie #8 on an IMAX screen and then of course Fantastic Beasts too. Harry Potter is right up there with my Disney obsession, and it's pretty gratifying to see these loves take hold in my kids :)

ATTQOTD:

I’ve always been a Christmas guy and have always believed in the magic of Christmas. When I was a kid we were on our way to Midnight mass and a radio report came on stating some pilots flying over the Atlantic Ocean spotted what appeared to be a sleigh being pulled by 8 reindeer. I heard that and I was hooked. Even as I got older the magic of Christmas always meant for a day everyone was happy and the day was just easy and loving.

ATTQOTD: Christmas has always been my favorite memory/holiday. Growing up and until 2007 the whole family gathered at either my house or my grandma's house for 4-5 days. It was the only time we were really all together at once. We had lots of traditions/gifts that I have no idea how they got started, like my mom always getting a box of chocolate covered cherries and some random person getting a box of tea bags. Fast forward to today and both my grandparents and my dad have all passed away and the rest of the family is spread across the country. It's just DH, mom and I now on Christmas. The only tradition we keep every year is our Christmas morning monkey bread. :) It is very hard not seeing my kids at Christmas, especially when I know they will be alone, DS in California and DD27 in NC. Both my DSD's live in NC but they are traveling to their mom's in Pennsylvania so DD27 is cat sitting and working. DS at least has our church family out there so he will go eat somewhere then go to work overtime. I am proud of both my kids that they volunteer to work on holidays so the people who have families can have it off.

So, I doubled up on my runs yesterday and today.
Like 2 a days (thinking like football players & practices)? Or just double your mileage for one run? Just curious as I've never done 2 runs in a day split by time & wondered if it was just as beneficial or would hurt more having to head back out?

lso, next week I could potentially have some exciting news to share with the running community on this board. Lots to look forward to and be thankful for!
That's exciting...now we are in suspense!

No special holidays that stand out, all have memories, but no big traditions anymore. Growing up I did love Christmas the most & snooped for presents so my mom had to lock them up in a room with a key! I guess Christmas time and even after New Year's & playing lots of board games cause it's so cold outside, we have a pretty elaborate collection of all sorts, some take so long just to refigure out, they are all day affairs!

Two-a-days like football players. I don't do it if a run is over, say, 3 or 4 miles and I try to have at least six hours of "recovery" in between.

Like, yesterday, I ran four miles in the morning and then went and did three miles of speedwork on the track as the sun was going down.

QOTD: I am loving seeing holidays, especially Christmas, through my daughters eyes! This past Thanksgiving was a nice one -- my cousin is heading to basic training this month, so it was a nice gathering before that -- -and i know we wont always have my grandparents with us -- so being able to have the memory of hosting the holiday, and having everyone here, is a good one!

ATTQOTD:

I'm running Barb's 5K and the Jeff Galloway 13.1 races in Atlanta this weekend. Its going to be 28 for the whole 5K on Saturday and 28 at the start on Sunday! I'm NOT a happy camper. It was 70 for this race last year. (Perfect IMO.)

I hate the cold. I'm planning on wearing tights, sparkle skirt, two shirts, gloves and a hat. Hopefully this will work. And hopefully it will warm up on Sunday - its supposed to be 50 for the high later in the day.

ATTQOTD: I like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving because it's just about eating yummy food, although I am the one that cooks said yummy dinner, so it is a lot of work. We didn't cook this year and instead went to a restaurant, which made it just kind of a meh holiday this year.

I like Christmas mainly just for the decorations. We have no children, we are both only children, and just the in-laws are still local. My parents move to FL (not to retire, just for the weather) as soon as I graduated college, and they only come back up here in the middle of the summer. So we just have the in-laws over for sandwich platters and pie. I hate the whole gift giving and receiving thing more and more as I get older, though. I do not know what to get anyone and no one knows what to get us, and so we just end up exchanging gift cards with everyone. I kind of wish we could just get rid of it because if I'm sending you a bunch of gift cards and you're sending me a bunch of gift cards, then why don't we all just keep our own money.

AGREED!! Sometimes I find gifts that I am excited to give, but it's rare. :confused3

We don't do gift exchanges anymore with the adults, it's way better for everyone & less stressful. It was just turning into a joke trying to continue it so we stopped a while ago. My older brother was the one who didn't want to let go of it, but finally it was like nope we're done so deal with it. He survived the change just fine :)

The adults draw names from a bag for Secret Santa gag gifts. It is pretty cool and we have gotten pretty inventive over the years. We open these gifts later in the afternoon on Christmas day while indulging in a few adult beverages.

We tried not doing gifts at all for a few years and then someone came up with this idea and it has been much more fun.

This week we have the following folks with races:

10 - @baxter24 - Durham Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
10 - tigger536 - Barb's 5k (NG / N/A)
10 - @NurseRunner - Tucson Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
11 - tigger536 - Jeff Galloway Half Marathon (2:15:00 / N/A)
11 - @GARUNMOM - Locomotive Half Marathon (2:44:59 / N/A)
11 - @Mickey Momma - Santa Hustle Smokies Half Marathon (NG / N/A)

@tigger536 if you would like me to remove you races from this list, just let me know and I will. I saw them posted and wanted to include you.

If anyone would like to revise their goal for this weekends race or add a race to the list, let me know and I will add is ASAP. Good luck to everyone this weekend and hope you have a great race!

ATTQOTD: I really do love the whole Christmas season, but have a love/hate relationship with Christmas and New Year's Eve. My birthday is the 30th, so when I was a kid it was eclipsed by Christmas and now that I'm over 21, it is eclipsed by NYE. Thankfully my dad's birthday is the 24th, so my parents were hyper aware of the issues and made sure to NEVER give me combined gifts and to have a distinctly separate celebration every year. I do love to decorate and my husband and I have a long list of holiday movies we watch every year (starting the day after Thanksgiving to get them all in).

QOTD: Today maybe you could tells us first about a special holiday... Something great that happened, something special this year or a planned event. It doesn't have to be running related; family/friend stories are totally welcome.

Well, since it can't be running related how about Disney related. Our Memorial Day trip this year was awesome. Just me, my wife and DD and it was an amazing trip. Almost 48" now so she's getting more adventurous with every trip.

My daughter losing her first tooth right there in Fantasyland and how great all the CMs were when it happened made it so very special.

Call me a scrooge, but I do not care for Christmas or any other holiday that requires extra time, work and money. My favorite is 4th of July because we always go camping and do fun things that the whole family enjoys.

That's why I love the week AFTER Christmas! It's such a relaxing time to no longer feel the need to be rushing around. The decorations are usually still up and everyone is just being lazy and snuggly around the house, enjoying their whatever's they got, and there usually is nowhere to be. The few days before Christmas are the worst for anxiety!
