The Running Thread - 2016

So a few interesting notes about tonight late night run.
1. I forgot my running socks at home and ran 4 miles in business socks.
2. Watched the 9th inning of the world series and then it goes into a rain delay..... That game may not end until sometime in the morning. lol

You are serious about catching up! I do enjoy your responses!

I have to go back to June to really catch up :lmao:

Congrats to the Cubs! I'm not much of a MLB fan, but do follow college baseball. Having said that, if your a sports fan last nights game was amazing to watch.

QOTD: Do you use back check offered for your races? Why or why not? What items do you check?

I do not use bag check. I have never had the need. Local are all small races. Disney I have always gone right back to the resort to clean up before going back out.

Been off on vacation and been swamped at work since getting back, but I just HAD to pop my head in here to wish @FFigawi the best of luck for Ironman Florida this weekend! I know what you're going through John and I can't wait to see how your day goes. Enjoy the moment you are in as best you can and trust your training...you have worked HARD for a long time and you are ready for this! You have a huge cheering section here at the DIS and we are all pulling for you bud!

QOTD: What are some things you think about while you are out for a run?

I think about all sorts of random things. I spend time listening to podcasts and critique what they're saying or I listen to music and sing along. I calculate percentage complete and remaining. I route out the path I need to take to hit requisite distance. I count laps around the local park for intervals. I think about the pace I'm running compared to target pace, and try to commit effort to memory. The list goes on and on and on.

and sing the entire Hamilton soundtrack in order in my head.

I've done this or just actually listened to it more times then I care to admit. It's my go to when podcasts get boring. Hell I wake up with Hamilton lyrics in my brain. And now they are releasing the mix tape!

ATTQOTD: like most I think about all the things when running. Evening runs usually result in thinking a lot about what I'm eating for dinner though.

ATTQOTD: usually when I let my mind wander too much, my pace slows considerably - and I always do that on my races! Otherwise I listen to podcasts or music (on race day). On speed days, I don't listen to anything so I can concentrate on my pace.

Good luck everyone racing this weekend!!!

ATTQOTD: When I listen to podcasts, I usually get sucked into them pretty well and I often find myself blurting out a laugh at funny ones, which then makes me feel subconscious. If I'm listening to music, I often choreograph a dance number in my head. In all my years of dancing, I never felt too tired to dance so if I imagine I'm dancing instead of running, I all of a sudden don't feel as tired. I also plan vacations and other Disney trips in my head while running which is a quite a pleasant thing to think about :)

ATTQOTD - This time of year I think about sports a lot. Today I spent much of my run thinking about the LSU game tomorrow. Alabama needs to keep rolling and LSU has as much talent on the field while playing at home in front of their crazy fans at night. My 7 mile run this morning flew by thinking about the game. My 22 miler on Sunday will also fly by thinking about the game, though I'll be either very happy or very sad while replaying the game in my mind.

Other times of the year, I would say that what I think about varies depending on the type of run I am into that day, and what is going on in my life. On speed work days, I focus on the run - my stride, my pace, my heart rate, my cadence, how I feel, etc. On most other days I just think about "stuff", trying never to think about my run. If I find myself struggling on a moderate or easy run I practice mantras, do math problems, visualize success, etc.

ATYQOTD: The only time I have ever checked a bag was at W&D last year so we could change and go to the after party. Then the delay, humidity, MASSIVE line at security/bag check (why do they make us go thru that when we are in an area that we were already screened to get into??), by the time we finished running we were DONE! Got our bags and got on a bus. At local races DH schleps around my backpack so I have everything I need when I am done! :)

ATTQOTD: On my short weekday runs I am usually thinking about what the noises I hear in the woods are, lol! I had a huge buck run out of the woods and across the road and into the woods on the other side right in front of me the other day! Scared the cr*p out of me! I am constantly planning what I would do if this or that happens while I am running, i.e. if a bear cub were to come out of the woods or if a creepy person stopped their car next to me, which way would I head, etc. I run in a very rural area!
On long run day DH rides his bike with me so we are usually chatting. I know I bore him to death, talking about my upcoming races, Disney race outfits, Disney plans (when he isn't even getting to go with me!). He is a great sport! Tomorrow I have a 20 mile long run on the schedule and he will be right there with me. Sometimes he does things at home that irritate me, but before I say anything I think about all he sacrifices and does JUST so I can get ready for a race and it keeps my mouth shut. :)

I think about anything & everything except how much longer I have to run. I solve problems at work, make up back stories about the people I pass by, plan my next vacation - anything to keep my mind busy and focused. I concentrate on my target pace too, but you can only look at your watch so many times.

I agree with this 100℅

Good luck tomorrow John. I will have Ironman Live going tomorrow. Had a friend just finished IMNC and tracked him. Was good to watch him cross the finish line.

His event they had to cut the bike down to 50 miles because of the damage they were still dealing with from Hurricane Mathew. Everything else was full distance

Thanks guys! Everything is racked & dropped off. Now sitting with my feet up trying not to be nervous.

As a LSU fan that will be in attendance tomorrow night, plus it being my birthday. I hope the run on Sunday is a good run, but sad. I'm trying not to get my hopes up to much, but I just feel better about it now that it isn't a rent a win for you guys like it has been with Les and his "exciting" game plan of toss dive to the short side of the field 3 time and punt. At least Nick had to game plan some in the last two weeks. GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I nearly always use bag check. I want my flip flops, dry shirt, and other gear available when I finish. I've got five bags to check this weekend, though at least one I'll never see again after I use it on the bike course.

Good luck with your Ironman!

Yesterdays question: I prefer to not use bag check as its just one more thing to mess around with. But if I have a mile or longer walk after the race then I like to check a pair of oofos flip flops to walk back in. If I'm running in San Francisco I'll check a sweatshirt in case its chilly at the finish.

ATTQOTD: I think about everything!!!!! Life, work, family, wine, beer, food, races, my couch, how many miles I've done, how many I have left, how hot the sun is, how my knee is feeling...the list goes on and on. Its really the one time my mind gets a chance to truly just wander all over the place.

QOTD: What are some things you think about while you are out for a run?

I usually think about work, (I know lame right), but then usually because I am thinking about work I start to think about my next trip/vacation!
I sometimes feel I can solve a lot of things running plus it keeps my mind busy and passes the time.

Thanks guys! Everything is racked & dropped off. Now sitting with my feet up trying not to be nervous.

John, the nerves just mean you picked a challenging goal to accomplish. You'll kill it. Just be safe and proud of yourself for doing something most people could never dream of.

QOTD: I think about any issues I'm stressed about. Working through them while I am running is the best. Most of the time I am planning Disney trips in my head. I have this weird problem where I can usually quote a package price very close to Disney's website so I run so many combinations during runs. I will plan where I will eat and everything. I've considered becoming a travel agent for a Disney travel provider for PT work because I love the planning part so much.
