The Running Thread - 2016

I want to apologize to my coach @DopeyBadger for going off plan. (He's risk adverse like me so I don't know where this came from.) But thank him for somehow getting me in this shape.

I'm relatively new to this thread, but not sure how I missed that @DopeyBadger is a running coach?! I'm intrigued! Just been winging this thing on my own, but maybe I need someone to help whip me into (better) shape for Princess and Tink challenges.

I ended up doing a "long" run that got cut a little short before the race, because I was running late and needed to make it back to the start to get my number pinned on and get to the starting line before the race started. I planned a 6 mile loop before the race and ended up doing 5.25.

The post-race mileage got ditched because we are getting the outer bands from Matthew and it was POURING all morning. Seriously a miserable long run + race. :) I was just done.

My original goal was 34:00, but when I had to put it into my long run, I wasn't really sure what to expect. As I got near the finish line, I was just hoping to go < 40:00. I was doing pretty well the first 1.5 miles of the race, but then I was just kinda done. My shoes and clothes were completely waterlogged and squishing, it was freezing (I wore short sleeves and sparkle skirt and it was in the 50's), my fingers were all puffy and squishy from being wet. I did make it under 40:00 in 38:58. :) Now I am still trying to get warm 4 hours later.

Congrats on making the best of the situation!

Race Report: I ran my Texas 10 Cypress this morning. I loved having the race site be about 10 minutes from the house. I had updated my goal to be a 1:20 and that is what I was telling other Cypress Running Club members before the race, and having a goal on a negative split. After the CRC team picture, did some warm-up strides and made my way to the start line. The Texas 10 race series always has their races be a 2 lap race for the 10 miles.

Started the 1st mile at a 7:43 clip, and had dial myself back a little. Miles 2 and 3 were just under 8 minutes. Had a good group of people to run with most of the 1st lap of the race. Some of the group started dropping off of the pace at this point. Mile 4 was a 7:48 and mile 5 was a 7:41. Felt really good and strong after the first lap and decided I would pick up the pace the last 2 miles of the race. Mile 6 was a 7:38, and backed off again for mile 7 with a 7:54. Picked a guy out about 1 to 1.5 minutes in front of me at this point and decided to see if I could catch him by the end of the race. Mile 8 was a 7:35 and making up some ground on the dude. Mile 9, 7:22 and getting closer. Mile 10 was a shocking 7:03 (did not expect that) and if the race was about 20 yards longer, I would have caught him! Race started at about 60 degrees, and was pretty darn nice for the race. I think that helped me with running a lot better and stronger then I expected to be.

Needless to say, with my splits, I had over a 2 minute negative split, and finished with a 1:16:36. I thought moving up to the 50-54 age group would make it easier to podium. Nope! Finished 5th in the age group and 43rd out of 409 total runners.

Overall, was very happy with the race and how I felt during and post race!

Going for a sub 1:20 and hitting 1:16 is ridiculous! Way to go!

@mbwhitti is a Chicago Marathon finisher as well! With a 39-minute PR!!

WOW! :worship:

@mbwhitti that is amazing!

LOL, not a real coach. Just do it for fun as a hobby. But if you're interested in what I can do for you just send me a PM. I'm all about trying to customize training plans to a person based on their goals, needs, and available time for training.

The weather was miserable for the Boston Half this morning. Rain, wind with temps in the 50's. I finished at 2:56:23 within my goal of sub 3:00 which I was surprised consider the condition. I've also been suffering some glute pain that became very evident running downhill. I stopped at the med tent for some muscle numbing cream and that helped a great deal. I got 2 medals, 1 for the half, and the 2nd for doing the 5k, 10k and half hattrick.

Great job Sue. I love that medley medal and the shirt looks really nice too. As weird as it sounds, and as crappy as the weather is here today, I was still wishing I could go for a run in it today.

I did my first "run" today!

OK, it wasn't really a true run - it was a mile on an "underwater" treadmill, but I'll count that as a training run! It was the first sustained 20-minute portion of active movement I've done in ... holy crap, 5 weeks!

It felt great to be able to do SOMETHING. This is a sad week for me - one, my baseball team is absolutely choking away everything they worked so hard for this season - but mostly because I should be in Chicago to run the Chicago Marathon with my BFF.

I'm sorry if this comes off as a sad post, because I don't mean it to. I'm very excited. I'm just ready to get back to training.

@Keels ...... one small step towards hopefully a successful recovery. How was the underwater treadmill? Never tried one but read about the tremendous benefits. Don't worry about the Rangers, they might find a way to come back and if it makes you feel better I will probably commiserate with you when the Nationals bow out this series or most likely the next. We can toast our teams for tremendous (regular) seasons which is more than most fans can do.

Hopefully your recovery will get you back to Chicago in the future. I hope to be there too so we have a mutual goal to do it!

Charlottesville and Blacksburg? 2 completely different schools - should be a blast!

@jhorstma ......we have done Charlottesville and Blacksburg already. Both good schools. This trip was to Clemson in South Carolina. Hurricane brought us wind and rain for most of the drive and no hotels between Charlotte, Columbia, and Atlanta according to Expedia at 11:oo pm on Friday night. My daughter found us a nice hotel in downtown Greenville right around midnight so all was good. Had a nice morning run in Greenville the next morning.
Weather was perfect for our campus tour on Saturday.

Time for her to start applying. Yikes!

QOTD: Have you ever seen someone get injured during a race or event, or a type of incident?

ATTQOTD: The past spring at a half marathon a lady in the starting corral fainted during the national anthem. It was the strangest thing to see someone just go down and unresponsive. EMS was on scene and got her to the side and as the race was starting she was sitting up. So I was nice to see that she was going to be ok.
I bring this topic up because over the weekend in Louisiana a Warrior Dash race was held in which one of the obstacles collapsed injuring several folks. It doesn't look good for the race brand as that obstacle was not signed off on and the methods for putting it together would make structural engineers cringe. http://www.theadvocate.com/baton_ro...cle_7e71b282-8d8d-11e6-90ed-c34a26cc7235.html

I was running with my son at the Shamrock 8k in 2013 and up ahead we saw a gentleman take a nasty fall and stay down. Hit his head and blood everywhere. He was already surrounded by half dozen people helping but I stopped and offered assistance anyway. After a few minutes the paramedics arrived and we resumed our run. Scary. Later found out that he was okay.

On the lighter side, I have seen the inflatable start/finish arches collapse multiple times. Once during the 10 second countdown to start a race, and once as people were finishing.
No injuries just plenty of laughter.

ATTQOTD - nothing during a race, but lots of stuff during runs. Lots of funny stories from my time in the Army that I won't share - running in formation after everyone was out too late drinking the night before. Also, my wife fell during a 12 mile training run a few years ago. Last mile on a trail and she tripped over a large rock and hit her head on another rock. I had to help her back to our car.

Someone asked a little while back about problems syncing to Garmin Connect. I just noticed when I put my 220 back in the charger that it failed to sync. It looks like the Garmin Express software lost my login, and that's probably why. So maybe double check that. :)

ATTQOTD: I did see someone take a nasty fall in a backstage area last year at W&D. She tripped over something (speed bump maybe) and went down so fast I don't think she got her arms out to break her fall. I think she was holding an elbow when she was on the ground. She was not far in front of me but kind of off to the side. It was one of those narrow really dark areas in the backstage of Studios where there are twists and turns before you got to the Osborne Lights. A bunch of people who were immediately near her stopped and were shouting out that a runner was down and I saw a cast member running over, so I did not stop myself, it seemed under control and I would have just made another person clogging up an already pretty crowded area.

Congrats to everyone on a exciting weekend of races! Some very big improvements and crazy weather for some. For the tri folks in the group, did you keep up / watch the IM Hawaii this weekend?

I've seen a couple people trip and fall - one lady during a 10K I just did in July, but she was fine. The other was during the WDW Marathon in 2015 during the out & back portion near WWoS - I was leaving and she was coming in. I think medical had to be called for her. :( And lastly, also during the 2015 WDW Marathon, I saw a guy limping around World Showcase pretty badly - I didn't see the actual injury happen but it was clear that one of his legs just was not functioning and he was dragging it along behind him. It was hard to watch.
