The Running Thread - 2016

Good luck everyone with your running events, training, or Hurricane evasion.

I am taking my daughter to look at colleges this weekend.

@LSUlakes.....Going against the wishes of Mrs. Slogger and my doctor, I have another event to add......Petersburg Halloween Half Marathon on 10/23. This is strictly a training and injury recovery day for me so no PR goals or anything like that.....2:24 seems realistic if my knee will hold up. Cue the training montage music!!
Charlottesville and Blacksburg? 2 completely different schools - should be a blast!

Well we made it through the storm without damage but our power has been out since noon yesterday. They say it could take days before it is restored. We are headed to Disney so we can atleast have AC and a hot meal.

ATTQOTD: This was the first race that I have had cancelled. They made it clear no refunds but they might reschedule. I'm not sure if that's even possible since they want to reschedule for next weekend and I'm sure the last thing the city wants to deal with right now is a race. There is also talk of turning it into a virtual race. I guess we will see.

ATTQOTD: My friend & I signed up for one of those 5K's with the inflatables, foam, etc. The company went bankrupt and didn't provide a refund, not cool.

Fall weather has finally arrived here. I just froze my butt off at my son's football game, but I'm looking forward to my 12 mile training run tomorrow - 40 degrees sitting at a football game is freezing but 40 degrees running is glorious!!

ATTQOTD: nope, no races canceled or shortened yet.
Ooh. I'm wrong, I did have one race canceled.

RNR had a half in Cleveland - I ran the race and liked it. They had a deep discount soon after for the second race, and I signed up. Race was canceled just about a month before race day (they said not enough people signed up). I got a full refund.

I'll revise my time to 2:15:00.

How close to each other will @whaler8 and I finish? It's a big race, but I'll be wearing the purple tank in my avatar and purple calf sleeves (no hat tomorrow). Say hi if you see me!

I never got back here to share the results of my last race. At the Gulf Beach Half on 9/17 I finished in 2:15:35 - a PR by 5:43! Thanks to @DopeyBadger for the training plan that got me there!

@mrsgryphon Sorry I didn't see you post before the race! I was pretty close to my expected time. I finished at 2:17:52, which is about what I was hoping for 2:15 would have been a PR. Perfect running day in Hartford, cloudy overcast, maybe 50 degrees at the start of the race. I hope everyone else running this weekend had great times (in both meanings!!)

Had a great 5K this morning...no PR, but close enough to feel happy with my finish. Of course my 5K PR is from a race in Minnesota which had little elevation change. No such thing as a flat course exists in East Tennessee.

I drove home thinking I should really run more 5Ks. I really love longer distance races, but all out pushing myself for three miles this morning felt good.

Now it's football time! Interested to see if my team can scrape by one more time. (I have my doubts.)

Glad you're safe and have an excuse to visit Disney! We're getting drenched right now. If anyone wants some comic relief, watch a bit of the NC State - Notre Dame game from here in Raleigh.

We were at the game @camaker! The whole field was a slip n slide. It wasn't pretty but we will take the win. Go Pack!

You're certainly more adventurous than me! I was happy to get my tempo run in yesterday only a little bit wet. No way was I going anywhere near the football game today. You're right, too. The conditions don't matter. Any win over Notre Dame is a good one!

OMG I had an AMAZING 10K this morning! Not only did I get a better POT for Princess and Tink, I set a PR and CRUSHED my 1:14 goal by FOUR FREAKING MINUTES! I still can't believe it. My chip time was 1:10:20!!!
:cool1::cool1::cool1:
I still can't believe it happened.

It was 40 degrees, and I LOVE the cold, so I think that definitely helped. But it was also up in Park City, which is quite a bit of extra elevation than I'm used to (we're about 4500 feet in Salt Lake - they're up around 7,000), so I really wasn't sure what to expect. My last 10K (and previous POT) was 1:14:25 so I was really just hoping to beat that. I thought MAYBE 1:12 was in the realm of possibility, and if things just went fabulously well I could hope for 1:10. Yowza.

The course was beautiful, about 3/4 on trails through a nature preserve. That did mean there were very few spectators, but I got to pet lots of nice dogs! A few bottleneck spots but nothing too bad, since there were only about 350 participants total across a 5K, 10K and Half. We shared a course, but they staggered the starts by 30 minutes. Water stations were at 1.5 and 4.5 miles for the 10K, and the details indicated they would have water, sports drink and beans, but nobody was at the first one - just two big orange spigot coolers with no cups. I skipped that one, since it was early the race anyway. The second one just had sports drink, but they had given us beans in our packets, which I had slipped into my skirt pocket. I haven't done many longer runs or races, so nutrition has been an experiment for me. I took three beans at about the 5 mile mark and they did seem to help some.

I did have a new experience on this race. I normally do walk/run intervals but have been trying to see how much I can run. For this race, I ran a comfortable but fast pace until I could see the mile marker, then sprint to the mile marker, then walk for about a minute after. That worked well until about mile 4.5, then I started to get a stitch under my right breast. I was scared maybe it was "chest pain" so I took a few more walk breaks over the next mile. It subsided, and I was in the final .8 miles, so I pushed it a bit and it came back again. I took another short couple of walk breaks, then ran through the pain for the last .3 miles or so. I'm open to any thoughts on what caused this and what to do if it happens again. I was well hydrated, had eaten a few hours before the race (english muffin with peanut butter on one half), didn't need to use the bathroom, and it was just before taking my beans that it happened the first time.

SUPER excited and still riding the wave. First thing I did when I got home was update my POT on Active.com for Princess and Tink!

Question for Garmin watch users: has anyone ever had issues with the GPS being out of whack? It's not completely off, but I've noticed the last few times I've used mine, that when I sync it and look at the map, my path is off. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's like not lined up with the roads/paths I'm running on. I know that it's not always perfect, but it's more off than what was usually normal. And it's not like I'm running in a different place. It's a bit of a bummer, since it leaves me wondering how accurate the distance is. Any advice? Is there a way to essentially reboot it or anything? I have a Forerunner 15 and it's a little less than a year and a half old.

Anyone having issues with Garmin uploading your route you've recently run? Is there a update?

Congrats on the PR! Sounds like a nice race.

So just needed to share. Ran my last long run before beginning the taper towards the Grand Rapids Marathon. I had 20 miles on the docket but decided to do them on the trails. I got to the park as the sun was rising and headed out. Chilly crisp air, leaves changing and falling. The trail goes by at least a half dozen lakes and as the morning progressed the sun just lit up the surface of the lakes. Totally beautiful. I ran easy took all the hills, nutrition and hydration were on point and before I knew it I was done. I honestly think this may have been the best training run I have ever had. So thankful for this morning. A total reminder of why I run. Just had to share.

Keep those race reports coming, congrats to all.

Simply Amazing! That's a 5.5% improvement between 10K PRs. Well done!

If you think something is wrong with the device you could do a factory reset. You'll lose all of the information on the watch, but it won't impact your Garmin Connect profile data. Here is a link to it. I've done it to my Garmin 620 a few times since I've had it for a variety of reasons.

This brings a smile to my face. You have to love those days. ::yes::

Thanks for the suggestion. I might give that a try.
