The Running Thread - 2016

We were at the game @camaker! The whole field was a slip n slide. It wasn't pretty but we will take the win. Go Pack!

Have you seen the video from Bass Lake Park today? Big time flooding ~2 miles from my house. I guess I'm going to have to find a new running route tomorrow!

Question for Garmin watch users: has anyone ever had issues with the GPS being out of whack? It's not completely off, but I've noticed the last few times I've used mine, that when I sync it and look at the map, my path is off. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's like not lined up with the roads/paths I'm running on. I know that it's not always perfect, but it's more off than what was usually normal. And it's not like I'm running in a different place. It's a bit of a bummer, since it leaves me wondering how accurate the distance is. Any advice? Is there a way to essentially reboot it or anything? I have a Forerunner 15 and it's a little less than a year and a half old.

Anyone having issues with Garmin uploading your route you've recently run? Is there a update?

I did have some issues a few days ago attempting to upload my routes via Bluetooth. I finally decided to actually plug it in to the desktop and have had no issues since. I think there was a minor update applied when I plugged it in. All is well now.

OMG I had an AMAZING 10K this morning! Not only did I get a better POT for Princess and Tink, I set a PR and CRUSHED my 1:14 goal by FOUR FREAKING MINUTES! I still can't believe it. My chip time was 1:10:20!!!
:cool1::cool1::cool1:
I still can't believe it happened.

It was 40 degrees, and I LOVE the cold, so I think that definitely helped. But it was also up in Park City, which is quite a bit of extra elevation than I'm used to (we're about 4500 feet in Salt Lake - they're up around 7,000), so I really wasn't sure what to expect. My last 10K (and previous POT) was 1:14:25 so I was really just hoping to beat that. I thought MAYBE 1:12 was in the realm of possibility, and if things just went fabulously well I could hope for 1:10. Yowza.

The course was beautiful, about 3/4 on trails through a nature preserve. That did mean there were very few spectators, but I got to pet lots of nice dogs! A few bottleneck spots but nothing too bad, since there were only about 350 participants total across a 5K, 10K and Half. We shared a course, but they staggered the starts by 30 minutes. Water stations were at 1.5 and 4.5 miles for the 10K, and the details indicated they would have water, sports drink and beans, but nobody was at the first one - just two big orange spigot coolers with no cups. I skipped that one, since it was early the race anyway. The second one just had sports drink, but they had given us beans in our packets, which I had slipped into my skirt pocket. I haven't done many longer runs or races, so nutrition has been an experiment for me. I took three beans at about the 5 mile mark and they did seem to help some.

I did have a new experience on this race. I normally do walk/run intervals but have been trying to see how much I can run. For this race, I ran a comfortable but fast pace until I could see the mile marker, then sprint to the mile marker, then walk for about a minute after. That worked well until about mile 4.5, then I started to get a stitch under my right breast. I was scared maybe it was "chest pain" so I took a few more walk breaks over the next mile. It subsided, and I was in the final .8 miles, so I pushed it a bit and it came back again. I took another short couple of walk breaks, then ran through the pain for the last .3 miles or so. I'm open to any thoughts on what caused this and what to do if it happens again. I was well hydrated, had eaten a few hours before the race (english muffin with peanut butter on one half), didn't need to use the bathroom, and it was just before taking my beans that it happened the first time.

SUPER excited and still riding the wave. First thing I did when I got home was update my POT on Active.com for Princess and Tink!

I love your shirt and that medal. We are very similar for 10k time so maybe we will be in the same tink corral?!

Glad to hear from everyone who has checked in from the east coast. Scary stuff for sure with that weather.

I now have a confession and I feel like a "bad kid" because I wasn't supposed to race at all until the end of this month. I did such a good job of holding back at my little local 5k last week and just ran long run pace and mileage that morning. Yesterday my hubby was running the college 5k across the streets. We had just watched Hamilton that night and the grandparents decided to keep our kiddo overnight. The weather was so cool out, like 50 degrees. I saw they were giving away free indoor track memberships at the college and I wanted one really bad. So I decided to just do a blind run and not be "dumb" about my time. I blame Hamilton, and the weather, and the two women running next to me who looked like the type of runner I've always wanted to be (good form, relaxed, strong.). I knew it was an Ooops after my first split so I tried backing down, then my second split was 4 sec faster, oops. So I just said "well I've messed up might as well finish this and see what happens. "
I want to apologize to my coach @DopeyBadger for going off plan. (He's risk adverse like me so I don't know where this came from.) But thank him for somehow getting me in this shape. I feel a mix of great about this and like an idiot. Long run will wait for tomorrow now. It does make my goal pace for 15k seem not as scary somehow.

New PR! by a lot! Don't listen to Hamilton soundtrack if you want to take it easy!!! 7th place age. Right between the two women running "with me."

@cburnett11 is doing well so far at the Chicago Marathon. He was halfway through with an average pace of 8:39/mi. He just crossed 35k and is still at an 8:39 pace. Only 4.5 miles to go... keep it up!

Now, @cburnett11 only has 1.4 miles to go, and he's at an 8:44 pace overall, so he is looking to smash his marathon PR. GO!!!!

Running 7 miles one day and 3 the next does not equal a 10 mile long run. It equals a 7 mile long run. If I were you, I would run the 10, get plenty of rest, and then have fun during the 5k.

'm with you, I mean there are those who do marathon weekends with one longer run after the other in successive days. They fuel up, rest up, and get back to it.

We saw it today! So crazy! We are off Avent Ferry near the holly grove schools so we didn't have any issues with flooding but half of our neighborhood still has no power.

:D

Well done! Super proud of you and your massive progress! Just make sure to take it easy the next few runs to allow your body to recover from that awesome race!

@cburnett11's Chicago Marathon Result

Finished in 3:49:13 (8:45/mi average pace)
PR by over 26 minutes!!!

Congratulations!

:cool1:

So proud of you @cburnett11!

I ended up doing a "long" run that got cut a little short before the race, because I was running late and needed to make it back to the start to get my number pinned on and get to the starting line before the race started. I planned a 6 mile loop before the race and ended up doing 5.25.

The post-race mileage got ditched because we are getting the outer bands from Matthew and it was POURING all morning. Seriously a miserable long run + race. :) I was just done.

My original goal was 34:00, but when I had to put it into my long run, I wasn't really sure what to expect. As I got near the finish line, I was just hoping to go < 40:00. I was doing pretty well the first 1.5 miles of the race, but then I was just kinda done. My shoes and clothes were completely waterlogged and squishing, it was freezing (I wore short sleeves and sparkle skirt and it was in the 50's), my fingers were all puffy and squishy from being wet. I did make it under 40:00 in 38:58. :) Now I am still trying to get warm 4 hours later.

Totally get it - running fast on tired legs can be miserable. Add the weather and I think that you did great! Plus, pushing yourself like this almost certainly strengthened your legs.

Race Report: I ran my Texas 10 Cypress this morning. I loved having the race site be about 10 minutes from the house. I had updated my goal to be a 1:20 and that is what I was telling other Cypress Running Club members before the race, and having a goal on a negative split. After the CRC team picture, did some warm-up strides and made my way to the start line. The Texas 10 race series always has their races be a 2 lap race for the 10 miles.

Started the 1st mile at a 7:43 clip, and had dial myself back a little. Miles 2 and 3 were just under 8 minutes. Had a good group of people to run with most of the 1st lap of the race. Some of the group started dropping off of the pace at this point. Mile 4 was a 7:48 and mile 5 was a 7:41. Felt really good and strong after the first lap and decided I would pick up the pace the last 2 miles of the race. Mile 6 was a 7:38, and backed off again for mile 7 with a 7:54. Picked a guy out about 1 to 1.5 minutes in front of me at this point and decided to see if I could catch him by the end of the race. Mile 8 was a 7:35 and making up some ground on the dude. Mile 9, 7:22 and getting closer. Mile 10 was a shocking 7:03 (did not expect that) and if the race was about 20 yards longer, I would have caught him! Race started at about 60 degrees, and was pretty darn nice for the race. I think that helped me with running a lot better and stronger then I expected to be.

Needless to say, with my splits, I had over a 2 minute negative split, and finished with a 1:16:36. I thought moving up to the 50-54 age group would make it easier to podium. Nope! Finished 5th in the age group and 43rd out of 409 total runners.

Overall, was very happy with the race and how I felt during and post race!
