The Running Thread - 2016

AQOTD: Besides the already mentioned garbage, dead animals, and poop, I have to add the exhaust being vented out of a fast food restaurant and morning breath from fellow runners at races who didn't brush their teeth before leaving home. I was dying on the busses at the WDW races last January. I wanted to be friendly but the guy sitting next to me had awful breath and he wasn't the only one.

About the same here! I ran 13.1 last night on the TM, and had 4 planned for today. Looked at the weather when I got home and set the alarm clock for 4:45 and was out the door around 5. Ran negative splits with the first being 8:34 and finished with 7:26. I have been running around 8:45 on average, and those miles felt almost effortless with the slightly cooler temps and lower RH. Not that my long run this weekend will be at a fast pace, I am looking forward to 58 on Saturday morning! I would imagine that you should be experiencing similar temps as myself.

Oh man, I've done 13.1 on the treadmill once (this past January) and I don't think I could do it again. That is a serious mental strain!!

So, @RunDisneyDad does this make it official, you're in? Awesome and congrats, if so!

Also wanting to know @RunDisneyDad , have you received the official e-mail? Are you currently jumping up and down celebrating getting into Boston?

Thanks for asking guys! Yea, I got my confirmation email earlier!!! It was definitely an emotional moment for me. That email was proceeded by a lot of miles, a lot of doubts, a lot of bonks, but every mile has been worth it. My favorite part was texting my wife "We're Shipping Off to Boston!"

Anyway, I have zero doubt you guys (and anyone else shooting for it) will get there too.

Wow, I thought everyone was thinking no adjustment this year.

I think part of what they had in the estimates was 24,000 runners with BQ's and it turned out to be 23,214 which is one part of it. Not sure what else is going on.

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run)

I think we've covered all of the gross smells, but I also find it unpleasant when I pass by something that smells awesome that I can't stop and have - like barbecue or cakes baking ... things like that.

ATTQOTD: Car exhaust. I avoid so many potential routes because it bothers me so much.

ATYQOTD: I have never bought my pictures from a race. I always check them, but there have never been any I loved enough to purchase them. I run with my phone and take some selfies, and at character stops I give the cast member standing there my phone. I remember checking the marathon foto version of my profile picture (which was taken with my phone) and my picture was better than MarathonFoto's. We do often get memory maker so in the future I will perhaps be getting Disney race photos. I'm curious if those of you that have experience with marathon @ Disney races and now the photo pass photographers at races feel there was any quality difference?

I think the quality overall was much better with the Photopass photographers versus the MarathonFoto guys at my recent RunDisney race, but I also felt like there were fewer photographers out on the course. Maybe it was a difference between WDW and DL or maybe it was the marathon distance versus half-marathon distance, but I felt like quite a few character stops at DL only had cast members available to take phone photos. Since I planned to purchase a Photopass, I wanted to see PhotoPass photographers at all the stops.

This would be a great way for me to end up in a wheel chair with two broken ankles. :)

Crutches and stairs - a disaster waiting to happen. My oldest son can attest. :crutches:

NO JOKE. Day 1, I was trying to head upstairs to get in bed. My husband was standing at the bottom of the stairs watching me to make sure I was OK. By stair three, he basically said "This is getting tough to watch. Just crawl up the stairs." :guilty:

If you would like to revise your finish time goal, just let me know. Good luck to all the racers this weekend and I hope the weather will be pleasant and the wind be at your back. I do not normally do this, but since he has provided so much help to those of us in this thread, I would like to give a special acknowledgement to @DopeyBadger . From everyone on the forum, thanks for all that you do, and we are all cheering for you!

I also had another odd idea, which may not be for everyone, but here it goes. For races that have a way of tracking you as you cross certain mile markers, if you would like post how one could sign up for text alerts and bib#. It is by no means a requirement, just a little something extra. Or maybe a thread on the strava link could be started since I think everyone name IRL shows up on it...

You can obviously take me off the list. :crutches: My goal was going to be 1:45 for this race. I am going to the race because my friend Matt is running. I can check out the organization, pick up my bib and shirt since I paid, and get a feel for the race for next year. It is supposed to be really fast and it will be a POT race for me. I also need to be around the race atmosphere. It will bum me out not racing but I LOVE the energy.

Congratulations. Awesome accomplishment. I am planning to spectate that race so I will see you run by, even if I don't know it, unless you stop and say HI of course. :D

Keels, don't feel bad. I was an absolute moron on the crutches. I kept asking myself how someone could do a whole marathon on crutches. And I was told to crawl up the stairs but being the "macho" guy I was there was no way. Well, I got to the third step and lost my balance and fell back landing on just my healthy leg. By the end of my time on the crutches I was crawling up and going down on my bum.

QOTD: I HATE cigarette smoke no matter what, but on a race course it is just plain rude and inconsiderate. Some of the smells from the sewage treatment plant and where they house the elephants at AK were not fun. Other than that I just remember running behind a guy during my first marathon. I kept trying to pass him but on walk breaks he would pass me. His BO was awful. I am so OCD about hygiene I brought a travel size deodorant in my roo pouch during the Disney marathon this year and put new stuff on around the 1/2 way point. :rolleyes1 But, I have been around other people with BO in races.

Yesterday was 9 weeks post surgery. Things are still slow but improving. PT has started. I rode my bike, on the trainer, without my boot today. It hurt but the other muscles in my leg were burning even more because they haven't been used either. I am starting to feel a little bit more myself with each workout now. I still have a long way to go according to PT but maybe by December I will be running again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. One good thing, the PT told me that there should be no reason why I won't be able to have a long running life once I get started again. She is a runner so she gets it. Even if she was lying it made me feel better for a while at least.

Everybody with a race this weekend, crush it! I am supposed to be running this weekend so run a little harder for me if you could.

Or breakfast tacos

Oh, I'll stop for a breakfast taco. I'm not a total dummy!

I just don't feel like eating that stuff when I'm running, or maybe even afterward. I've never thrown up, but I get some nausea for sure.

I've done it post-race for a 5K and 10K, but never for anything more than that. And never during, but I imagine I could make a potato, egg and cheese taco happen during a 5K without much issue.

Maybe...it depends on how fast I was running and how hot it was!

Whew! Final training run of the week is in the books. Managed to "sneak" 14 miles in this evening as thunderstorms split around my running area. Made for an entertaining light show and only got showered on the last 3/4 mile.

Now I can head to Disney World for my eleventh anniversary without the requirement of a training run hanging over me. It will also be the first vacation days I've used this year without a race attached to them. Love the running but I'm ready for a long weekend of "Disney downtime".

Lucky you! I remember the first time I ran 13.1, it was raining. I was doing a "dress rehearsal" for the Glass Slipper Challenge. I knew it was going to rain, but I try to get experience in all kinds of weather, since you never know what will happen on race day (especially in Florida). It rained more than I ever thought. Sideways, and into my face, and everything. It was horrible. Probably my worst run ever, but I did it. Then I knew I could run the half, no matter what.

Vacation without a race attached? I've done that, but not at WDW for a very long time. What is it like to sleep in and not eat bland food for half of your trip? I don't even remember.

That's my key to Dopey that I'm lucky for - like, this year, I'll get to Orlando about a week before Christmas and ... well, as of this point, we don't have a true "go home" date since we're probably going to be back again in February. I can get all my park fun out of the way well ahead of Marathon Weekend, so I don't feel the need to burn the candle at both ends during Marathon Weekend.

Now, it's completely different at Disneyland ...

Oh I always do my fun stuff at the end. I'm too afraid I'll get tired or hurt myself. Then again, it could be because I have yet to come out of a race weekend in the same condition I went into it. One might wonder why I keep doing it.

Hmmmm, can we find a way to have a taco stop during one of the races this year....
