The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run)
Smoke. Not like cigar or cigarette or even the smoke of some illicit substances, but fire kind of smoke. There was some sort of fire in a local park (kids making a bonfire or setting leaves on fire or something) that the fire department was handling while I was out for a run last week. Other than that, just the usual car exhaust.

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run)
I run trails, and many of the trails are shared by horses, so I have to smell (and carefully navigate) piles of horse manure constantly. The only other common nasty smell that I encounter is the smell of stagnant pools of water.

ATTQOTD: Car exhaust and car smells mostly...I run in a pretty urban area. The hamburgers I was holding in a sack that one time I thought it was a good idea to run to lunch and back (very motivating.) One of our favorite pizza places caught on fire last week so you could definitely smell it in the air. Surprisingly for a sport with so many sweaty people, I don't think I've ever been bothered by or noticed other people stink...maybe I'm the stinky one and I don't notice??

@LSUlakes My goal for my race this weekend is "Not fast"... I'm trying not to injure myself before my big race and I'm only participating because it's outside my front door/charity. And I don't want to mess up my training plan. I'm still debating if I should do it or not at all. Can "not fast" be a goal?

ATTQOTD: There's a restroom around 3.5 miles into my favorite trail and I avoid it at all costs. I've almost thrown up from the smell. The park rangers clean it regularly, so not sure why it can get so bad.

Smoke (burning trash or fields), diesel exhaust, and bananas are three I really can't stand and seem to encounter all too often.

This week we have the following folks with races:

01 - @Baloo in MI - Little Traverse Half Marathon (1:45:00 / POT Effort)
01 - @roxymama - Christmas Without Cancer 5k (TBD / N/A)
02 - @derekleigh - Tanger Outlet 5K (NG / N/A)
02 - @Waiting2goback - Smuttynose Half Marathon (Corral Placement / N/A)
02 - @Anisum - Wineglass Half Marathon (3:00:00 / N/A)
02 - @DopeyBadger - Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon (3:17:49 / N/A)
03 - @Flossbolna - Nuremberg City Run 6k (40:00 / N/A)

Good luck everyone!

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run).

The paper mill in the town where my grandma lives can produce some very pungent smells! There have been a few times on a run that the wind hit just right and the smell was pretty gross. You get used to the smell if you are there for awhile but it always gets me the first time I roll into town for a visit.

ATTQOTD: Smells that come to mind are people smoking weed, exhaust from buses and sometimes on trash days running by people's trash cans and wondering what dead animal they are tossing.

You smell weed regularly where you run? Is it legal where you are? I have smelt it once or twice before, but it was as a car was driving down the road. Very interesting.

We could go with Finish as a goal, which is always a good goal to have and should be on everyones list of things to accomplish for any race...

ATTQOTD: Outside of Disney's sewage treatment plant I can't really remember a lot of awful smells during my run. However if I run in the morning on a hot day then put my gym bag in my car to ferment until I finish work that can result in some pretty terrible running smells.

Can you add another race for me?
10/2 Historic Hillsborough Half Goal time somewhere south of 1:45.

Car exhaust, cigarettes, dead animals - yuck! I managed to experience all three on a run from my house to a near by park with a good 5 mile trail loop. It was like the trifecta of gross smells.

@LSUlakes please pull my race for this weekend. Not running unfortunately, work obligation. Sorry should have mentioned sooner. Good luck to all the others racing this weekend! Go get 'em!

Definitely not a regular thing. I've smelt it when a car drove by and the other times (less than 5) its been on trails and is usually a couple of young people sitting on a bench smoking it. Oh, and its not legal where I am.

If you would like to revise your finish time goal, just let me know. Good luck to all the racers this weekend and I hope the weather will be pleasant and the wind be at your back. I do not normally do this, but since he has provided so much help to those of us in this thread, I would like to give a special acknowledgement to @DopeyBadger . From everyone on the forum, thanks for all that you do, and we are all cheering for you!

I also had another odd idea, which may not be for everyone, but here it goes. For races that have a way of tracking you as you cross certain mile markers, if you would like post how one could sign up for text alerts and bib#. It is by no means a requirement, just a little something extra. Or maybe a thread on the strava link could be started since I think everyone name IRL shows up on it...

Thanks @LSUlakes! I appreciate it. It's been a fun and difficult training cycle. I spent 10 weeks at mileage higher than what was once my week PR set during the January-May training cycle. I'm very excited to reap the benefits during my victory lap. :car:

I'll keep my goal at 3:17:49 as that is the time I trained for. This is my "A" race and everything I have been doing the whole year has been building to this one race. I will give my best effort, and will be willing to go "there" when the time comes. Today's the last day for my prediction contest and it's open to anyone that is willing to make a guess at a chance for a prize!

Below is a summary of my training over the last 20 weeks.

2016 Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon Training Summary

Also, if you'd like to follow me live on race day (Sunday, October 2nd, 7:30am Central start time) my bib number is 212. New timing company, but last year's splits were at 7, 13.1, 20 and Finish. The website won't start working until Thursday afternoon.

But most of all, I wish the best to the other runners this weekend. We are kindred running spirits this weekend and I will keep you in my thoughts as I'm running as well.

ATTQOTD: Smells... let's see. I have run past my fair share of marijuana clouds. :) Other than that, usually just the usual roadkill or skunk smells. When I did Old Port HM in July, the course was gorgeous, but part of the last 2 miles went right past a water treatment something or other that stunk bad. Quite the contrast... you have all the rich houses up on the hill overlooking the ocean, you have this great paved biking/running path right along the ocean... and then this stinky water thing in between the two. :)

Oh, and BO at races. There is one gentleman who I see at all the local races, because they are part of a series, so you see a lot of the same people. He is a race walker and happens to basically walk at exactly the same pace I run (cry :) ), but he has terrible BO. I really try to get away from him but sometimes I am stuck!

Oh, re: smells... 2 weeks ago on my long run, I was getting all ready to be annoyed. There was a man at the bus stop that I was approaching who looked sketchy enough to make me a little nervous as a female running alone early on a weekend morning. He was leaning up against the bus stop sign, smoking. I wasn't too too worried, but I was annoyed that I was going to have to run through his cloud of smoke.

And then I passed him and all I could smell was strawberries. He was vaping. :D

I'm curious if those of you that have experience with marathon @ Disney races and now the photo pass photographers at races feel there was any quality difference?
Yes... and also, no, lol! It all depends on the photog: some are clearly really, really good at their craft and know how to frame up, expose and capture a great shot on the fly, while others are of the set the camera to Auto, point, shoot, and hope for the best variety. Some of my Dark Side 5K photos are just terrific - balanced, caught at exactly the right moment, lit perfectly. Most of my pics from teh 10K and half are okay, but not stellar. I've never had anything really, really fantastic from MarathonFoto, so there's maybe a slight uptick in quality from PhotoPass, but it really seems to depend on the individual photographer.

ATTQOTD: Two words: road. kill. It's hot, steamy FL, we have a TON of road traffic and many, many small animals trying to cross roads.

ATTQOTD: I'm a total baby when it comes to gross smells, so I feel like every run I have to do a weird breathing thing (like take a big inhalation before I think I will smell the upcoming offending smell and then exhale for a long time after). It's probably not very good for my training! The worst for me are roadkill, cigarette smoke, and car exhaust. One of the very few times I've gotten up early enough to run with friends in the dark, we all started smelling this pretty bad smell mid-run, and then I realized we were right next to a very large, very dead deer. It was very startling to be so close! And smelly!

Sorry to hear that. Work is overrated at times.

I believe you are going to do great! Like you said, a victory lap! Also to note, don't listen to the little voice in your head telling you to slow down.... unless of course you go out a 6:00 m/m pace or something crazy like that. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

ATTQOTD - dead rotting fish so bad I puked (a house not too far dumps them in the ditch, why???), roadkill, trash trucks, stinky cars, smoke, portopots being cleaned (when I ran through our local carnival)...I'm sure there's others I have blocked from memory, oh wait stinky people in a race (never me I'm sure, wink wink!)
