The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: Funny you brought up smells today. I just got a message from the person I sent these pics to last year, because she just now looked at her other folder in FB.

Along one of the streets on the marathon route there are these trees that emit a foul odor. It's early on in the race when everyone is still a little giddy. I started jokingly complaining about the odor calling them poop trees. Lots of other random runners near me and my friends joined in and cracked jokes. Flash forward to the end of the race. From behind I hear this lady holler out "Poop Trees" as loud as she could while she was streaking past me (apparently she hasn't heard the horror stories of people face planting on our downhill finish). I died laughing and hollered it back to her. The result were these photos captured by one of the many photographers. But seriously those trees are foul IMG_5717.JPG

Welcome to the thread, glad you decided to join in on the fun. Good luck on your upcoming race this weekend! Would you like me to add it to the list in the OP? Do you have a goal for this race to add to that info? TIA

Would love to be added to the list in the OP. Theres a small possability I could PR on this course I think. I'll set my goal at 2:50:00 which is a small PR for me.
Also on 10/23 I'm doing RnR Vancouver Half. No goal for that one. Just going to enjoy exploring a new city on foot for 13.1 miles :)

ATTQOTD: Skunk is probably the worst I have smelt that I recall. it is possible I have smelt worse, and have purged the memory!

In other news, for the 1st time in 114 days and a record by 6 days, Houston was below 70 degrees! I had to get some miles in to see what that felt like....

I believe you are going to do great! Like you said, a victory lap! Also to note, don't listen to the little voice in your head telling you to slow down.... unless of course you go out a 6:00 m/m pace or something crazy like that. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Thanks! I sent the little voice on vacation to Disney World.:smickey: And I plan to run blind to pace (as best I can because people call out splits and predicted finish time at every mile marker) until mile 24 or 25. Just got to trust my body will guide me to the correct pace on that day. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve to help me out.

This summer I had to pass a particularly gross smelling garbage truck on a warm/humid/stagnant air morning. It was hit-the-wall bad.

When my kids ran XC, I was always amazed that there would be at least one random smoker out on the course spectating. I felt bad for the kids running through the cloud of 2nd hand smoke. It was often times the parent/grandparent/acquaintance of a slower runner... I really would feel bad for these runners because the smoker typically would be "encouraging/yelling at" their particular runner to pick up the pace, all while puffing away and likely clueless to the effort required to run. :confused3 If you choose to smoke, you should probably find a better place than next to people trying to competitively run.

ATTQOTD: I have the normal smells of a suburban runner. Smoke is the one that bothers me most usually. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, but also the smell of wood stove or standard fireplace smoke in the winter bothers me. It triggers coughing fits. When I run on Tuesdays I often run through a neighborhood that has trash collection that day. I always forget until I round the same corner at the same time and see the trash truck. Last weekend I kept smelling a skunk on an early morning run. I was worried it was nearby and I was going to get sprayed.

I'm curious if those of you that have experience with marathon @ Disney races and now the photo pass photographers at races feel there was any quality difference?

I personally had much better photos this past Tink thanks to the photopass photogs than I have for ANY race with marathonfoto. I was very happy with the change.

ATTQOTD: Living at the edge of a suburb but next to dairy farms I get a mix of smells. Skunks, cows and stinky drainage in the creek by the trail. Exhaust and sometimes pot once I'm running on the main road. Nothing too bad though. During races nothing is jumping out at me so I guess they've all been fine!

Good Luck to everyone racing this weekend! Fingers crossed for great weather and good times!

About the same here! I ran 13.1 last night on the TM, and had 4 planned for today. Looked at the weather when I got home and set the alarm clock for 4:45 and was out the door around 5. Ran negative splits with the first being 8:34 and finished with 7:26. I have been running around 8:45 on average, and those miles felt almost effortless with the slightly cooler temps and lower RH. Not that my long run this weekend will be at a fast pace, I am looking forward to 58 on Saturday morning! I would imagine that you should be experiencing similar temps as myself.

Ooooh yeah. Running on garbage day is rough!

And I agree with the smokers spectating the races...they always get the side-eye from me. o_O

Step 1: Get cast off

Possible, but unlikely unless the phrase "Hey, watch this!" is uttered first. :)

I was thinking about stress fractures or shin splints.

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run)

Garbage, fish, bacon frying, cigarette smoke...sometimes all at once. It is delightful.

@LSUlakes - I have a correction to my November race. Either I can't type or can't look at a calendar correctly. The race is 11/12 - I'll be out there with a couple other Disboard folks.

Incase anyone was wondering, this years BQ is BQ-2:09. I was not expecting that this year... crazy stuff.

Could also be wrong doing on my part. Ill make the correction.

RE: Boston – I’m sitting on a BQ minus 3:30 so my window will open next Monday. I’m cautiously optimistic as everything I’m reading has the cutoff very close to the listed standards.

So, @RunDisneyDad does this make it official, you're in? Awesome and congrats, if so!

So you'll be joining @Keels and I for our Dopey shenanigans this year, right? ;)

Happily!

Famous last words, "Hold my beer and watch this!"

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run)

ATTQOTD: Yeah, that treatment area at WDW is bad! Also skunk and rotting road kill are probably the most common. I've also smelled weed and cigarette smoke.

At first, when I started thinking about it - it seemed silly.

But the more I let the idea snowball ... it seemed ... perfect? IDK! I'm just excited to do something that all my friends can take part in - even the littles and the non-runners - and want to just give it a feel of the weekends that I love so much.

And, duh, Keels-specific bling. Because obviously.

Also character stops. You could have people dressed as you at different ages. :rotfl:

I also second the need for there to be beer. And margaritas. But you already said you have mimosas, so that might be overkill. Or not. :drinking1
