The Running Thread - 2016

It's so dark here in the mornings I couldn't even get a run in before work today. I am ordering some reflective gear so hopefully I will be able to soon.

But my husband says he is still worried about what goes on when it's that dark! He did see a coyote last week when he went to to gym at 5.... I really need to decide if I should join the gym for the winter or just try and make morning runs work, I can get runs in on the weekends no matter what. The gym adds 20 minutes round trip to the work out... But it's only 19.99 a month and I get that back from work... So even if I only use it once or twice a week maybe it's worth it?

Sorry just thinking out loud here.

I almost exclusively run in the dark during the week, since I run at night. I highly recommend the Noxgear Tracer360 vest. It has kept me from becoming a hood ornament on a few occasions. One of my neighbors was running with a reflective vest last night, and I didn't see him until I was with 30-40 feet away. Too close IMO if it were me facing down a car. I also keep my pepper spray with me for both bad guys and animals.

ATTQOTD: Only if you count the pool at the Contemporary the afternoon after the WDW 5k in January. Brrrrrr (It actually wasn't that cold according to the rest of my family but I am a baby with cold water.) I did feel pretty good after though.
@CheapRunnerMike I'm sure you've probably swam in water during your tri-races that I would consider "icey" because of my opinions on comfortable water temps. My hubby raced in 58 degrees this weekend...no thank you.

I have used ice water situations back when I used to dance. But I never liked it.

Sidenote: Can everyone think happy thoughts for me at 11am Central today? Or clap you hands for me and all the other :tinker:.

Good luck! Are we talking PDC or Tinkerbell half? I don't think Tinkerbell sold out last year and SWLS Rebel challenge took a while before it sold out (but maybe because it's so close to WDW marathon).

Otherwise Tink was great last year! So jealous of you guys!

:tink::tinker:

Was right on track with the Lumiere Challenge training. Ran my 9.5 last week and felt good, then 2 days later my ankle and foot give up. Feels like it self sprained, gets very tight. Odd part of it is my 4th toe over if I stretch it feels like it shoots a pain so bad that it is literally being burnt by fire. Tried to walk the other night but couldnt until I unlaced my shoe.

Went to the running store and got an arch support insole for a high arch and an ankle brace for support.

It seems to be slowly improving but its frustrating having no idea what happened.

I don't own a stroller and never will, but for those who do, trackers like this might be useful. I know a lot of people who use them on their bikes, luggage, etc.

This would have been perfect! I always think of Tile in terms of losing thing like keys, but I may invest in it for future trips even though this was probably our last vacation with a stroller. Just throwing one in our backpack in case it was accidentally left somewhere would make it beneficial. If only there were some way to easily attach one to my son's sunglasses, I would go buy some today. He lost 2 pair while were on vacation. Thankfully I brought 4 pair with me.

I'm in the same boat as you and I am personally more of a fan of reflective gear than gyms. In the mornings I run with my headlamp and such but once it cools down a bit more I'm switching to afternoon evening runs. Usually I can get out before it gets too dark (4ish) and in before any animals come out. You really have to consider beyond the 20 minute add-on how you'll feel about treadmill running. For me I get really bored so I run outside even in the winter. If you share your husband's concerns but want to run outside things like pepper spray can help with most potential attackers (animal or otherwise).

Just one bit of caution: these tile devices do not have GPS capabilities. They use Bluetooth which is great if you are within 100 ft. They also will remember the last map location where you had your phone within Bluetooth range of them (useful if you forget where you left something). However, if something is stolen, the only way you will get the location is if the stolen object comes within Bluetooth range of another tile device (even if it's not yours; this is called Community Find).

QOTD: Do you ever use an ice bath, or soaking your legs in ice water, as a form of recovery? If not, why and would you consider it in the future? (Todays QOTD is submitted by a fellow poster. Just wanted to say thanks to this particular poster and others for the suggestions! Keep them coming!)

I've done it before. During my last marathon training cycle I did it after a couple long runs. I also did it when I got back to the hotel room (after a late breakfast at Kona) after my January marathon. I certainly think I recovered fairly quickly after the marathon... but that could've been caused by me getting back out later that afternoon and walking throughout EPCOT. With mine it has been just running cold water in the tub and then adding as much ice as I could stand and/or what was on hand. It's plenty cold without getting too crazy with the ice. Using a sweatshirt, towel, etc. to stay warm is a bonus.

Great to hear feedback on the Noxgear as I was looking at this last night! I will look into pepper spray too! That stuff hurts..... Once when I was young may 10? My cousin was babysitting and I was playing with her keys and she had pepper spray on there and I sprayed it not a direct hit to my eye but enough that I was in a ton of pain!

I would totally do at night but earliest I can get out is 6 most nights so it's starting to get dark already, so similar issues.... I don't love a treadmill I already know that, but I thought maybe once in a while and they have some classes I might try yoga spin etc.... Also going to look into pepper spray see above for my lovely story on it.

I am also a big fan of the Tracer360 when running in the dark. It's very comfortable to wear and it's a big upgrade over passive reflectives, especially if you use the color cycling feature. It is much more eye-catching than reflective gear.

Well, if you can cross train that is always beneficial too. ESPECIALLY YOGA.

Sorry to hear about your being pepper sprayed I know there are alternatives but I don't know much about them. I know @PaDisneyCouple recommended Spray Shield Animal Deterrent Spray a few pages back. Also, you should look into headlamps if you plan to run anywhere that isn't heavy on street lights so you can see in addition to being seen.

ATTQOTD: I have put my feet in an ice bath (bowl) a few times. My feet swell a lot on long runs over 14 miles, especially in hot weather, and it feels great. I'm always too tired to prep a full ice bath though, but I do want to try it because I believe it will be beneficial for me. Maybe I will have my hubby prep an ice bath for me after my marathon next month.

ATTQOTD: The thought of an ice bath makes me a little nauseous. I can't handle cold. Even a lukewarm shower or bath would be torture for me, so it's a big no way to an ice bath.

I prefer deep tissue massages and soaking in a epsom salt bath.

ATTQOTD: I have never taken an ice bath from running. I did play basketball in college though and I soaked my lower legs in the ice tub there many times. :)

ATTQOTD: I have done the ice bath after runs that are 15+ miles. I don't always do them, but when I can I do. I do find that it helps a little, but not sure exactly how much. I am not sure if the ice bath falls into the same category as compression socks or not. Either way if it works for you, keep doing it is my suggestion.

I found an article about the science behind ice baths a while back. This was one of the articles I found http://www.outsideonline.com/1971446/recovery-ice-bath-isnt-always-such-good-idea. From what I remember ice baths really only hold up under specific circumstances. Basically if you take an icebath after most strenuous exercise you wind up slowing your bodies adaptation, but in specific circumstances ice baths are beneficial as they can reduce the pain making it easier for you to perform the next day. I think this is what FFIgawi was saying. As a result I don't usually take icebaths now post workout but I will at Disney during marathon weekend. (Fill your laundry bag up at the hotel ice maker to faster fill your tub)

I have done ice baths at Disney Challenge weekends only. After the 10k and the half twice, and only after the half twice. I do not really rest post race. Part of the deal with my family is I will still be fully engaged in the trip, so the ice bath gives me 10 minutes to try to jump start my recovery, then I shower and its off to the parks for the day. I wear compression socks as well. We stay in DVC villas so I start stockpiling ice both from the freezers ice maker or cube trays (not preferred) and the ice machine, which runs out a lot, as soon as we check in. I have no idea if it really works, or if it is placebo effect, but I have felt fine, little to no soreness after 4 challenge weekends, so I will likely stick with it:)
