The Running Thread - 2016

Does anyone happen to know if the Wine & Dine Half-Marathon is always scheduled for the first weekend in November? Trying to make some room only reservations 499 days out, which is long before the date of the race weekend is officially announced.

Thanks!
I originally posted I thought so here, but I don't know now and I can't delete it. :)

It seems to be that now, but in the past it's been all over the place:

2010 - 10/3
2011 - 10/1
2012 - 11/10
2013 - 11/9
2014 - 11/9
2015 - 11/7
I could be remembering this incorrectly, but I think the move from October to November was to accommodate the Tower of Terror 10-miler. They should likely have next year's dates out sometime in the next couple of weeks (well...maybe).
Thank you! Now it's getting him on the same page..... He wants me to run faster.... Ugh
And this is why I do almost all of my runs by myself. I like having total control over my pace, walk breaks, etc. :)

ATTQOTD: (from yesterday). When I found the WISH forum; two years ago, I found lots of interesting information and began following specific threads associated to my first runDisney race. It took me a long while to stop lurking but eventually I joined in. I found those threads to be helpful and welcoming, but always had an expiration date once the event ended. It never felt like a real community to me.

When @LSUlakes proposed this thread I was excited as I saw it potentially as a longer term and more general running thread. But it has been so much more! I am inspired and challenged each time I read. You all have made me laugh, made me evaluate myself and taught me so much about running. This thread has really become a community and I consider myself lucky to be able to participate in it!

To all with races this weekend - go get em!

Speaking of, I was just reading your Dopey trip report (again) and saw some of your friends ran other races that weekend. Do you (or anyone on the thread) run with friends for events like this or just go on your own and meet at the end?

I ask because I have run all my run Disney races with friends and didn't set the pace. That was awesome at the time, but as I sign up for more races I find myself having races I want to run as races and worry about my friends getting hurt feelings. It's not that I don't want to run with them (I'm happy to most of the time) but there are certain races where I want to do my own thing.

@Anisum the friend I ran the half with that weekend is faster than me now due to my being injured - we ran that race together and our paces were very similar because I was in better shape and she was newer to running, but we didn't run the DL Half races together because I was recovering from time off and she was way better trained than I was.

Before that race, we (my 3 BFFs and I) tried to run Wine & Dine together and it didn't work. Paces weren't the same...we didn't talk about it beforehand and did end up splitting up during the race, which led to some hurt feelings. We learned from that and now we run separately and meet at the end (and text one another during the races). :) That was before the DL Half so I knew there was a good chance we'd run separately and was okay with it.

I think the key is to make sure you're all on the same page ahead of time and figure out what people's goals are and whether it's okay to split up, and that it's not personal at all. We didn't do that before Wine & Dine and it was a mistake. Now we know better.

Yeah, I don't think it would go back to October, since it seems like it's the thing to close out W&D now, but I meant more that the last few have not actually been the first weekend in November. Maybe it's the first weekend in November where the whole "weekend" (that starts on Thursday) fall within November. :)

I would think, but could be totally off base, they don't want it to overlap with Halloween, so I would think 2nd weekend next year. Total guess, I just assume Halloween crowds stick around a few days and the races help fill up rooms so probably the 2nd weekend 11/7-11/10.

FYI totally making this up, but that's my thought process.

My phone game is depressing; if I tried this I'm pretty sure I would fall and break my face.
I should clarify - the texting happens during walk breaks after I have safely moved to the side of the course. :)

It was beneficial to me during the Disneyland races because my faster friend was giving me a heads-up on where the upcoming characters were! :thumbsup2

So I've been stick rolling my calf & shin before running the last 2 days (after reading others here roll before running) & it really seems to help with my shin splint pain (it's muscle related not bone I'm pretty sure). I had only been doing it after (not even my shin really just my calf) & kept thinking doing it before would be like stretching cold muscles & was scared to hurt myself. Anyway between rolling religiously and a compression sleeve I feel like I'm running a little more normal & excited for my longer run this weekend. The pain was to the point I was holding my foot weird to try to loosen the shin & calf, leading to a tired foot & leg. So, thanks for all the rolling comments the other day, hoping this lasts & the nagging pain (which was hurting all the time not just when running) leaves eventually. So stick rolling seems to really help...knock on wood!

I normally run the Disney races with my running spouse. She & I have the same pace, train together when we can, and love running & talking with each other. The only time we didn't run the whole thing together was the full during Dopey two years ago. She had GI issues and sent me on my way because she knew this was my only shot at a Comrades qualifier.

Oh, maybe... I didn't even think of Halloween. :o

I've run all my Disney races with my DH. He can run faster than me but is a sweetheart and just runs at whatever pace and intervals I want to run. We run nearly all our races together although we ran our first ones separately last year at our local half/full race when he ran the full and I ran the half. We're going to split up again this year since he's working with one of our group members with a specific PR time goal and he wants to help her achieve it.

I love running with him and our group, but I'm actually thinking it might be nice to just run all on my own this year and zone out to my music. We shall see. :)

I always thought W&D Half was to close out the last weekend of W&D. Sometimes they extend W&D a day or two, but it's really about being the last weekend of the whole W&D event.

There was still a week of it left last year... it went through the following weekend. It looks like this year is the same.

Wanted to add a response to yesterday's QOTD: Shoes! Without the running forum I would have never heard real life stories about zero drop shoes, which it turned out was exactly what my feet needed to stop the shooting pains I was getting. An amazing difference! The real world discussions about running 'equipment' her is amazingly helpful.

Also, earlier in the week there was a discussion about doing the Dopey for the first time. This year was my first Dopey, and first ever marathon. Some of the information I found most valuable when I was training was not about running, but planning the weekend.
First off, we agreed to a nice slow pace for each race, even the 5K. I made pacing bracelets to wear with upper and lower limits. At each mile marker, we were able to look at the bracelet and determine if we needed to pick it up or pull back a bit. Slowing down for the 5K was tough.
Second, make a fueling plan based on what you discovered during training. If you know you need to eat every four miles to maintain level energy, eat every four miles, even if you don't feel like it at the time.
Thirdly, after each run we would put our feet up. Literally, lay in bed with our feet in the air resting against the wall. I enjoyed this particularly since my feet get really tired and my feet and ankles swell.
Fourth, pool time and hot tubbing. Spending some time in the cool pool, relaxing, was very refreshing for the legs. And the hot tub does wonders for relaxing the legs.
Fifth, even though you are at WDW, try to limit your park time until after the marathon. We would walk to dinner (table service to be sure we had 'healthy' options), pick one or two things to do, but otherwise we would relax.
Finally, remember you are doing this because its fun! Enjoy the atmosphere, and stay calm. We stopped for pictures when there was a character we were interested in, stopped and the petting zoo, and overall just had a fun time.
That was longer than I intended, but the information was so helpful for us this year, I thought it was important to share with other soon to be christened Dopeys!

Slight frustration, I asked DH if he had a goal for our 5k next week and he said 27 min, I said 35. He would like to run together, but is slightly annoyed I want to do run walk intervals....

I feel like then run yourself and we can meet at the end, let me run how I want to.

In his defense up until I trained for DL 5k I would try to do some type of exercise and always give up, so I think he is trying to motivate me, but I trained and ran the DL 5k just fine....

I think if he wants to motivate you, he should motivate you to run, not tell you how to do it. The amount of people who who think that run/walk is either not a choice, or it's because you don't want to run... Maybe that's a sensitive subject for me...

I probably would tell him to run by himself then. lol Maybe that's also why I'm not married...
