The Running Thread - 2016

Mostly the inside of my right knee. It hurts when I start my run but by the end, the pain subsides some. It's sore the rest of the day. I took a bath and aleve and it helped. I'm thinking just inflammation from new exercise. I think I'll incorporate some stretching, I bet that will help.
The inside of my left knee hurts some, too, just not as bad...that pain goes down to the inside of my ankle, but the pain is worse at the ankle.

To me it sounds like tight calves since you say it goes from the knee to ankle. I would do some calf stretches. Stretch lightly before running or warm up a little first or do dynamic stretches before running versus static stretches after (just google stuff and you'll get lots of stretches). Tight quads & hamstrings can also cause knee pain, so probably work in stretches for those too. Lots of times the spot that hurts is actually caused by a muscle elsewhere pulling & creating pain

Good job getting started!!

My husband is a walker so we've been walking our 5ks together as usually I have another longer race that weekend.. The last 5k I told him I wanted to push myself and I was amazed how hard he pushed to 'not keep me waiting' (I came in at 33 and change he came in at 42 and change about 10 min faster than I expected him)

His first 10k is Wine n Dine but I think we'll be evenly matched as I'll be 27 weeks and just starting to re-train/up my milage (Florida summer won this year..) with the goal to safely finish..

So I thought I'd just say hi to everyone here.

I'm a complete RunDisney newbie, but it's been a goal of mine for a while now. About 2 months ago a friend mentioned she was signing up for the Princess 5k in Feb 2017 and in a moment of optimistic spontaneity, I decided to jump in too! I've done two 5ks in the past but I walked them both and they were more of a 'fun run' type thing. I've wanted to be a runner for years and I decided this was the perfect opportunity. The first weekend after I registered for the race, I sat down and developed my own running plan - and I've been training at least 3 times a week since then.

I am definitely a lot bigger than I should be, and that makes running all the more of a challenge, but having the 5k as a goal (and the opportunity to plan a trip to WDW) is the most amazing motivator. I'm absolutely falling in love with running and since I started training, I've lost 7.3kg/16lbs which is one very nice benefit of running lol! 5k is still a challenge for me but it doesn't stop me dreaming of one day running a 10k, half marathon and maybe even full marathon! I love that Disney has so many different runs, because there will always be a new one for me to work towards.

Anyway, that's me - I'll be lurking around for a bit, asking questions etc. Looking forward to sharing in the support!

Welcome! RunDisney is definitely a great motivator with plenty of race options. :)

@tacboze - I have never used the app either, so unfortunately I can't help there.

My first thought when aches and pains pop up that I can't explain by training effort is "is it time to replace my shoes?" When I decided to conquer C25K the first time, I just wore some cross-trainers I happened to have on hand. So I am going to point you in the direction of shoes...

I. Love. This thread. I am learning so much just by reading. But I'm still so full of questions! I don't have running friends and my family is like I am, er, USED to be....only run for emergencies.

I completed week 2 of Galloway's couch to 5k...I'm hurtin', y'all. How do I know if my pain is just soreness from new exercise, or if I need to get it looked at? Do I use ice or heat? Do I stay off it completely, or walk some off and on the next couple days? Do I continue my training? I don't want to skip a run.

Also, I don't quite understand how Galloway's app works. It said I had 6 min left in my run and all the sudden started a new timer at 3 min and he was telling me to cool down. Thought I still had 6 min left! So confused.

So. Many. Questions!

Congrats! I just finished the couch to 5k a few weeks ago! I don't really have much advice but I see that @Mickey Momma suggested new shoes, and I think that's good advice. When I first started I had shin pain I went and got fitted at a running store for shoes and the pain pretty much went away after that.

Good luck with your training!

Finished my half marathon today in 1:50:07!! Almost a 3-minute PR on a day that was way too warm and humid for mid-September. When I wanted to slow down, I kept thinking about wanting to be able to report back here with a good race. So thanks, everybody, for helping with my mental toughness! :teeth:

I'll recap in more detail in my training journal.

Welcome! The Princess 5K is fun! I will be there too. The course and character stops are just as good as the longer distances (except no MK), and it is much less pressure. It is not timed at all, and as long as you keep moving, they'll let you finish (within reason). I took over an hour this year and there were plenty of people behind me. You are going to have a blast, and probably get the runDisney bug.

Congrats on your weight loss and your new start in life! Make sure you have proper shoes and you're running at a comfortable pace. Running is painful and hard, but it should be enjoyable as well. Are you doing intervals?

59:02 for the Dulles Days 10K!!! PR baby!!! And let me tell you, for any plane lovers out there, this is worth a trip next September. You pass through the Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy annex (Space Shuttle, SR-71 Blackbird, Enola Gay, etc.), race past a United 777 that they tow out for the race (with free pics!), run up and down the 2 mile runway past planes taxiing by the terminals, and then return after the race for the Plane Pull festival out on the tarmac! Just a really cool all-things-aviation experience.

Congrats! And that sounds like an amazing course!

Not running related, but...bythe way, I think it was someone in this thread that recommended uBlock. It is life changing! Thank you, whoever you are!

Ran a 20 miler today - my first run with e-Gel. I was out of town (in Chicago) all week, but I managed to get in all of my runs, so I felt ready for the run. I got a good night's sleep (Alabama won!) and woke up to 70+ degree weather and 100% humidity. :scared:

The e-Gel worked as advertised for the first 16 miles or so of the run. They have a lot more volume than any other running fuel that I have used, so that will take some getting used to. Ran with water instead of Gatorade in my Camelbak. But the heat and humidity eventually caught up with me. The e-Gel makes me more thirsty than any other fuel that I have used, then add in the weather conditions and I ran out of water too soon. The last 3 miles of the run were really bad, but I made it. Kept my heart rate low (averaged 138 BPM) but lost 6 pounds of water weight on the run even though I drank 65 oz of water - not good. That also explains why I was so light headed at the end.

I am going to use the e-Gels a few more times before making a final decision about them. Again, the size/volume was a slight problem for me, as was how thirsty they made me (drank a lot more water that I am used to drinking in similar conditions which caused me to run out of water too early in my run).

At any rate, I start my official Dopey training tomorrow. I am stoked!

^^ just dont become dependent on the gel's.... good training methods and diet, will always be a better bet. I just say this because I used to be reliant on them, stepped up my training game and absolutely have no need/want for them anymore. mostly because I dont want to pump myself full of the sugar/caffeine thats in them usually. not to mention most taste horrible and leave a film in your mouth which I find repugnant.

also I want to mention if its hot outside (like florida) and your running the extra sugar/caffine can ramp up your heart rate, causing you to sweat more, sweating out the electrolytes in your blood, causing your blood to thicken which causes your heart to work harder to pump the blood, causing you to overheat, then heatstroke sets in, then you end up face down in hollywood studios. :(

ever used salt tabs instead? they usually have the electrolytes you sweat out like Na/K/Ca/Mg. The other replacement thats better than the gels/gu's IMO is Beta-Alanine. It's a hydrogen buffer to get the lactic acid from your muscles so you wont fatigue.

just my $0.02
(sorry for the rant just very anti-gel/gu products)

Thanks - I have tried just about everything over my decades of running and found nothing that works as well as youth. When I was young I could run forever an never need fuel. Now that age and injuries have slowed me down, I require fuel on runs longer than 20 miles. It is an absolute fact - without fuel I totally bonk on those runs no matter how well trained I am for the race, even when the weather is very cool and sweating is not an issue.

On runs shorter than 15 miles I never carry fuel, and I don't even carry water for runs shorter than 10 miles. I know my body pretty well - just trying something new - but I appreciate the feedback.

You're welcome! ;) I love it. I put it on DH's computer too. Some autoplay ads still come through, but I mucked around with chrome settings so it's not so egregious. I also highly recommend 1blocker for your iphone.

Thanks! I'm getting that one too. I hate ads!
