The Running Thread - 2016

Tell him you want him to run faster and see how he likes it (sorry, I'm feeling zesty today)
But on a serious note: my first 5k was 42 minutes. I got down to where I am now gradually. And I don't always run my fastest every time. And my fastest will never win me any race so I try to keep all my goals very personal to me. It's great that he is encouraging you, but remind him that gradual change may be safest to prevent injury but also will keep you the most motivated to keep going. You don't want to feel like you've failed on a day where you should be celebrating what you are doing. Let's say you surprise yourself and finish in like 33 or 34...you want to feel happy about that. Hope that helps a little.

And this is why I do almost all of my runs by myself. I like having total control over my pace, walk breaks, etc. :)

I think if he wants to motivate you, he should motivate you to run, not tell you how to do it. The amount of people who who think that run/walk is either not a choice, or it's because you don't want to run... Maybe that's a sensitive subject for me...

I probably would tell him to run by himself then. lol Maybe that's also why I'm not married...

Thank you! Appreciate all the support and input!

I have suggested you run your race I'll run mine.... I guess next week we will see what happens... I have no desire to push myself to hard and either get injured or be miserable and want to stop running. I want to run the race and have fun... We even got a babysiter so we could both run :). I want to enjoy it!

There's just no point in doing that. This is your race too.

Speaking of, I was just reading your Dopey trip report (again) and saw some of your friends ran other races that weekend. Do you (or anyone on the thread) run with friends for events like this or just go on your own and meet at the end?

I ask because I have run all my run Disney races with friends and didn't set the pace. That was awesome at the time, but as I sign up for more races I find myself having races I want to run as races and worry about my friends getting hurt feelings. It's not that I don't want to run with them (I'm happy to most of the time) but there are certain races where I want to do my own thing.

Not to step all over @Ariel484's question - but I've done four RD race weekends with friends in the past year, and while it's a sensitive subject, we've always talked about what the plan is beforehand. The only race that we've all run together was the Marathon during Dopey this year - and it was mostly because I need my two BFFs to get me through to the finish line of that race.

Everything else, we'll usually start together if we're in the same corral, but we'll take off at our own pace to run our own race. I've got one BFF that LOVES to stop for all the pictures, while another just wants to pass people and get the race done with. Meanwhile, I'm slower than both of them and I like a combination of the two experiences.

I normally run the Disney races with my running spouse. She & I have the same pace, train together when we can, and love running & talking with each other. The only time we didn't run the whole thing together was the full during Dopey two years ago. She had GI issues and sent me on my way because she knew this was my only shot at a Comrades qualifier.

I look forward to finishing ahead of you during the Marathon at Dopey this time!!! (P.S. When can I make FP+ choices??)

Also, earlier in the week there was a discussion about doing the Dopey for the first time. This year was my first Dopey, and first ever marathon. Some of the information I found most valuable when I was training was not about running, but planning the weekend.
First off, we agreed to a nice slow pace for each race, even the 5K. I made pacing bracelets to wear with upper and lower limits. At each mile marker, we were able to look at the bracelet and determine if we needed to pick it up or pull back a bit. Slowing down for the 5K was tough.
Second, make a fueling plan based on what you discovered during training. If you know you need to eat every four miles to maintain level energy, eat every four miles, even if you don't feel like it at the time.
Thirdly, after each run we would put our feet up. Literally, lay in bed with our feet in the air resting against the wall. I enjoyed this particularly since my feet get really tired and my feet and ankles swell.
Fourth, pool time and hot tubbing. Spending some time in the cool pool, relaxing, was very refreshing for the legs. And the hot tub does wonders for relaxing the legs.
Fifth, even though you are at WDW, try to limit your park time until after the marathon. We would walk to dinner (table service to be sure we had 'healthy' options), pick one or two things to do, but otherwise we would relax.
Finally, remember you are doing this because its fun! Enjoy the atmosphere, and stay calm. We stopped for pictures when there was a character we were interested in, stopped and the petting zoo, and overall just had a fun time.
That was longer than I intended, but the information was so helpful for us this year, I thought it was important to share with other soon to be christened Dopeys!

I agree with a lot of this! I took the 5K and 10K far faster than I ever intended to - the 5K because I was excited to finally be doing my first race of the Challenge I had been thinking about for so long; the 10K because I was tired of being @$&^*@# wet and in the rain and I just. wanted. to. get. done. The half I took easy, and then I had my BFFs and support crew out for the full.

It's crazy - we finished the full and IMMEDIATELY went straight into DATW. No nap, nothing. I thought I would experience a crash, but man - runner's high (especially the Dopey High) is REAL.

I did the same thing - back to the house every day for pool time/lounge time. I didn't really do any park time until after the full (well, we did go in to DHS on Friday for lunch and to get @mbwhitti's annual pass ... I can't remember if we rode anything or if we just wandered around a little bit and had wine?).

I keep meaning to ask which adoption group you went through. I had greyhounds growing up and we always went through NGAP but looking at the races you're running your further out towards York. I was wondering what greyhound groups were out that way.

I'm usually 2-3 minutes total off my race pace for a 5k but it's different for everyone.

We adopted through Keystone Greyhounds, but they are in the process of transferring assets to Wheeling Island. Around 900 hounds were adopted through the group. Also in southcentral Pa: Personalized Greyhounds, GPA Maryland, and Nittany Greyhounds.

Do tell more. I recently got attacked by a dog on a run, so I've become a little wary of them. I don't want to carry pepper spray because I'm confident I'll primarily spray myself. (I also don't want to hurt the dog.) I don't think it would have helped in this situation--it was a very fast, unprovoked attack. But I'd like to have some option what to do when I come across the random unleashed dog that I can predict might become a problem. Slowing to a walk and avoiding eye contact is just not terribly empowering!

Sorry it took me so long- busy week at work.

It is called Spray Shield Animal Deterrent Spray. Looks like it is available on Amazon. It contains 1% citronella. The packaging says not for use on bears, and also not effective on trained attack dogs (check package to confirm).

Also - on the "running with your spouse" thing.

My husband says we "run together". The only thing that closely resembles "running together" is that we both cross the same start and finish line during the course of the race.

True that!
My Road ID says "my race, my pace". DW and I tried to run around the Epcot resorts a few years ago. After one lap of the lake, she told me to "just go; you're stutter stepping to stay at my pace". We agree to each follow our own plan at the races we do together.

Again, not married, but that seems like the way to do it. If you really want to run together, I think the faster person should slow down to match the slower person. It's much easier (and safer) to go slower than it is to go faster.

don't recall if I posted it or not: 2:27 last weekend. But I have now completed a 13.1 mile race that went the prescribed distance (not 1/2 a 1/2 W&D 2015). Not what I wanted, but looking back at my journal- I was under-trained. Not enough runs at or over 10 miles. Early last year, during my calf injury recovery, my PT told me: run a distance easy one week. If it goes ok, then the next long run at that distance, you can push the pace. That worked great for me, as I built to Wine and Dine last fall. I just should have varied my distances more (too many long runs, too close together for me). I'm thinking I should be able to shave some time of that number in the future. Tempted to pick up another 1/2, but I keep telling myself that completing Lumiere's Challenge is the primary goal for 2016.

I would jump for joy with a 2:27! You're getting out there. That's the important thing, and you don't want to risk injuring yourself again. Good luck on Lumiere!

For the married couples running together discussion - my wife wouldn't run at all if not with me, so I run with her, at her pace. I really, really enjoy running with my wife, so I don't care a whit if that means that my times are effected. But, again, I am not into running to win anything. I am not competitive and enjoy the act, expecting nothing from the sport but what I take from it personally.

I'm not married, and I run alone, but I couldn't agree more. I could not care less about what my time is, as long as I'm within the minimum pace.

I. Love. This thread. I am learning so much just by reading. But I'm still so full of questions! I don't have running friends and my family is like I am, er, USED to be....only run for emergencies.

I completed week 2 of Galloway's couch to 5k...I'm hurtin', y'all. How do I know if my pain is just soreness from new exercise, or if I need to get it looked at? Do I use ice or heat? Do I stay off it completely, or walk some off and on the next couple days? Do I continue my training? I don't want to skip a run.

Also, I don't quite understand how Galloway's app works. It said I had 6 min left in my run and all the sudden started a new timer at 3 min and he was telling me to cool down. Thought I still had 6 min left! So confused.

So. Many. Questions!

What is the pain? Where is the pain? How severe is it? Some aches and soreness are normal, but I can't make a generalization like that.

I can't help on the app question but I think I can on the soreness question. I finished C25k last year and I was most sore right around this time back then. I also got really sore after the first week with the more aggressive minutes. I'd bet on it just being your body getting used to this. My refuge was warm baths or showers and light yoga stretching. But mostly my body just got used to it over time. Do a double check on your posture also (no hunching, no over-striding, head up, etc.). Hope that helps a lil

My wife and I don't run together. She doesn't run nearly as much as I do but for events like Disney, she'll up her mileage. The only time we ran together was for her first half last year at the Wineglass half in NY. She kept apologizing for being slow, but I had told her from the moment we signed up, I would run at her pace.

But outside of that race, we run at our own pace and meet up at the finish.

Mostly the inside of my right knee. It hurts when I start my run but by the end, the pain subsides some. It's sore the rest of the day. I took a bath and aleve and it helped. I'm thinking just inflammation from new exercise. I think I'll incorporate some stretching, I bet that will help.
The inside of my left knee hurts some, too, just not as bad...that pain goes down to the inside of my ankle, but the pain is worse at the ankle.

I don't want to go to the doc every time I feel sore. I know I'm going to get sore. But at the same time I don't want to keep running on something if I've somehow already injured it :/. It's going to take some getting used to figuring out these different aches and pains!

So I thought I'd just say hi to everyone here.

I'm a complete RunDisney newbie, but it's been a goal of mine for a while now. About 2 months ago a friend mentioned she was signing up for the Princess 5k in Feb 2017 and in a moment of optimistic spontaneity, I decided to jump in too! I've done two 5ks in the past but I walked them both and they were more of a 'fun run' type thing. I've wanted to be a runner for years and I decided this was the perfect opportunity. The first weekend after I registered for the race, I sat down and developed my own running plan - and I've been training at least 3 times a week since then.

I am definitely a lot bigger than I should be, and that makes running all the more of a challenge, but having the 5k as a goal (and the opportunity to plan a trip to WDW) is the most amazing motivator. I'm absolutely falling in love with running and since I started training, I've lost 7.3kg/16lbs which is one very nice benefit of running lol! 5k is still a challenge for me but it doesn't stop me dreaming of one day running a 10k, half marathon and maybe even full marathon! I love that Disney has so many different runs, because there will always be a new one for me to work towards.

Anyway, that's me - I'll be lurking around for a bit, asking questions etc. Looking forward to sharing in the support!
