The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

I've discovered that the less clothes I wear during the run, the better I feel. No don't take that the wrong way, but my preferred attire is sparkle skirts and tanks/singlets. Even when it's a little colder I've discovered I'd rather be cold at the start because I know I will warm up and not be happy. LOL

So I thought my leg/hip flexor whatever that was bothering me was better, but I had some trouble again last night. I might have to go see the doctor, but I might see what happens with some other changes I want to make in my day-to-day footwear first. I noticed the pain during the day, so now I'm wondering if it's my flats (payless specials/no support). I'll spend $100s on my running gear, but work gear, forget it!! LOL

Swap out books for running stuff in the second to last panel for me. :)

Does anyone keep a running journal?

What does it look like, what do you document? As I get more into running, I thought it might be nice to have something to look back on!

Also, does anyone have an alternative to the map my run app? I loved being able to find "courses" around my house....but now they want to charge me for that :(

I have for many years, but it is more a log than a journal. I put in notes about injuries and how specific weather conditions effected me so I can look back when the seasons change, but it is mostly a log of distances, times, heart rate, etc. Mine is done in Excel.

OMG this is so me too! I can be soooo frugal when it comes to spending. But for me running is like my blank check and I just keep spending.

My training journal is here on the disboards. Prior to starting this I kept extensive records on excel detailing a ton of stats like distance, pace, heart rate, records, race results, etc.

Strava has segments that are local runs that others have done that you can complete against or test yourself over repeated runs. This feature is free. We have a disboards group if you'd like to join. Just click the link in my signature. I use my garmin to actually capture the runs so I can't speak to the functionality of strava while running.

I write my running info on a wall calendar dedicated to work outs. I write what I did (running, fitness class, etc). If running, I write mileage, pace, and now that I have my fancy Garmin, average heart rate, and if weather was of special note that affected my run I will make a note of that. It's fun to see it all layed out on the calendar. I also have been loving looking at my running data on Strava that serves as a type of running journal I think.

Speaking of soft drink, I have noticed people have a lot of different names for them. We have always just called any type of soft drink a coke. As in, what kind of coke do you want to drink? It is my observation, that southerners are very loyal coke drinkers as opposed to Pepsi.

In SC, we say "Would you like a Pepsi?" Or "would you like a Coke?" And then offer choices to the guest..."We've got Diet, Dr. Pepper, or orange." Strange now that I think about it. We've also got RC Cola, which I THINK is regional but I've never looked it up. However, if I'm trying to be funny I say "Pop" and try to do a northern accent like "Pawp" because it seems quaint and humorous around here. Or better yet, "Sody Pop" which I got from Foghorn Leghorn.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.

I have a selection of tanks for the summer, and until recently all were tech fabric. I've found one cotton blend that is light and wicking that I've enjoyed in the heat also. For races I like to wear something a little nicer (not a race shirt lol). My favorite "pretty" running shirt right now is this one. I loved it, so I got a second color.

For my first and second marathon I kept a written journal: one was a purchased Galloway journal and the next was a purchased Runner's World journal. Minimal info like weather, pace goal, RWR intervals etc. When I started my new training cycle this year, I just started making notes in Garmin because most info was already there. I was also working off a more detailed technical training plan (thanks, @DopeyBadger) so the other details were documented ahead of time. Now I'm on Strava and that combined with my training plan are documenting my progress pretty well. Right now I'm learning how to go back and look at the technical stuff.... there's good information there if I can learn how to interpret it. I did love the written journals, though, simply because there is a good effect from writing things down.

Generally tech shirts, short and long sleeve depending upon the weather. I will where cotton during the winter months because I will probably have other layers on so it does matter to me.

I've used runningahead.com for my running log/journal/diary. You can map out courses and save them for later. It's completely free.

ATTQOTD: Always tech material. I am currently wearing tanks mainly. When the temps drop, I wear short sleeves. In the winter I wear long sleeves. Most of my longer races have been in the cold, so I've worn the long sleeves. I tend to stay cold (I keep a heated throw in my office year round), so I don't really ever overheat in the long sleeves in the winter.

On a side note, I passed a guy running in pleated khaki shorts and a regular cotton tshirt yesterday. It was 5 pm, and around 90 outside. He looked like he was a seasoned runner, so I was baffled.

I made a video of the 2016 WDW Marathon. It's on youtube. There is a guy running in a similar outfit in the video. It's around mile 3 if I remember correctly.

So it was your fault!!!! lol. It was very unpleasant that day, and to think 24 hours later was about as good as it could have gotten for a marathon in south FL.

The day after the marathon would have been perfect running weather for sure.

I wouldn't wait. Take it from me. I waited on an injury in each of the last 2 years. I caught this one sooner than last year but I should have gone in February. Had I done that I may not have missed any races this year at all. I missed 2 races last year because I waited to have my foot checked out.

I've used the website dailymile.com for years. I mostly just use it to log miles and track the number of miles I've put on my shoes, but I know you can create and find "courses" with it.

I recently started my first attempt at a more detailed journal over in the training journal section of this site (link in my sig). I was hoping just having it be public would make me more accountable to my training plan and so far it seems to be working.

@LSUlakes No goal for my race. I always want to sub-30 if I can muster it, but it will be HOT! Goal is to smile while inside Soldier Field to get good pictures even if I am dying. And so my kiddo in the stands doesn't think I'm dying :)
The course map just came out yesterday (why did it take so long?) and looks like we get to run up and down the football field which was unexpected! And we will be on the jumbotron too! I wonder if it will have protective covering on it or if they are gonna let us junk it???? Map attached for anyone interested. I'm excited.

This looks so cool! Have a blast!

Strava is my swim/bike/run journal. I document the workout I did (if any), how I felt during the run, track the mileage of the shoes I wore, but mostly I just try to come up with a good title :) You should join the DISboards group, as @DopeyBadger mentioned the link is in his signature...

We used to have RC Cola here in Canada too...the 'RC' stood for Royal Crown, wonder if it is the same stuff?

This is awesome guys. Thanks for pointing out there was a strava group for this message board. I had no idea. I didn't even realize my garmin was already linked up to Strava. I'm not sure when I set that up, but when I joined the DISboards group this morning all my mileage appeared.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: Always tech fabric. In warmer weather it's mostly short sleeve tech shirts, but I do have a few singlets for really hot days. I've bought a few more lately due to my INKnBURN obsession. I don't really vary type of running gear for training versus racing.

Does anyone keep a running journal?

I have a spreadsheet where I just document basics - activity, distance etc. and I track my miles on my shoes. I have a training journal here on the Dis as well, that doubles as a Goofy pre-Trip report.

I have a training journal as well (link in my signature) that I use to keep track of my training and write race recaps and lifestyle ramblings. I use an Excel sheet (@DopeyBadger created) to keep track of my training plans and paces...just add a tab for each plan so I have the old one right there if I want it. Has different pace for different types of runs during the week (easy, tempo, long, etc.)
For phone apps I like Nike+ & Garmin connect (if you have a watch) as good alternatives to map my run.

@dmross That tank top you linked to is so cute! I am very tempted to get one today. I have an itchy shopping finger.
