The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

I run a lot at night, especially in the summer. I started at least one of my 20 milers while training for Disney after midnight. I'd have to say sometime between midnight and 1:00am is probably the latest I started. I really like running at night.

Speaking of soft drink, I have noticed people have a lot of different names for them. We have always just called any type of soft drink a coke. As in, what kind of coke do you want to drink? It is my observation, that southerners are very loyal coke drinkers as opposed to Pepsi.

Northeast Ohio calls every soft drink pop.

Thanks to everyone for the positive thoughts. I ended up getting to talk to my boss late this afternoon, and he appreciated my honesty on what was taking place. He assured me that this was a valuable lesson learned and I do not to fear the loss of my job. In reality we could restock the pipe and fittings, but we would end up losing about half of the investment due to fees. The other option is to keep it in our laydown yard and wait for a job to come along and use it. I had a opportunity to try to place blame else where, but if I was doing work by the book, this would not have happened. I learned that just because I am told to hurry up and put in the order, the extra time required to CMA is much less than doing it in a hurry. It was a very long day, and I am still at the office catching up on lost time on my newest project. I am going to go for a run soon, but I am tired and not sure if I will get in the total 6 miles tonight... Again, thanks again for listening to my personal problems and the kind words.

Glad it looks like it will work out for you. Mistakes happen and I'm sure your boss knows it is a mistake you won't repeat. I think we have all learned something the hard way at one point or another.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

Once it gets to about 40 degrees I don't run in any shirt, training or race, unless I'm doing a trail run. I always wear a shirt on the trails to minimize my tick risk because we are an area where lyme disease is a concern. Not a terrible one but a concern none the less. When i do wear a shirt I always go with a tech shirt.

:D

My shakeout run at the resort was probably around 8pm. I thought the question was about training runs, though, so that's why I didn't count W&D itself. That surely was the latest run I have started, since it was the 2015 delayed race, so we didn't get started until like 11:30 by the time my corral started. :)

I have a couple of other local races that I do that are evening races. One starts at 6pm in mid-August, the other starts at 5pm in mid-September.

I figured you meant training runs so I was just teasing you but you can count W&D as a late run for sure. Last year it was certainly late. :-)

26 - @SueInBoston - B.A.A 10K (NG / N/A)
26 - @Mimsy Borogove - Her Madison Half Marathon (NG / N/A)

Let me know if you would like to adjust your goal for your upcoming races this week. Best of luck to you all!

Tonight I am running the second race of the summer series 2 miler. I did not run the first one this year. Todays course is a double loop and very narrow course in a park in town. I did not run any of these races last year and my PR for these events is 13:46. Not sure if I will hit that mark or not today, but I am feeling good at the moment, just not sure about the speed.

Sadly, no goal time for me. When I signed up for this race my goal was going to be under 50:00 Now I am going to run it with my friend who did the marathon with me and we are just going to try and beat his time from last year. I am not sure would it was off the top of my head but it should be doable depending on weather. Ultimately the goal is to finish it with no addition injury as I have another race the following weekend. That's the one with the kids so I need to make it to that one or they will be disappointed.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.

I run in tech shirts. No particular brand. I go with what feels comfortable in the store for the most reasonable price. I usually end up wearing my favorite ones for races. For a race I need to be as comfortable as possible. I don't need anything getting in the way of a good time. I thought I quoted @Barca33Runner but I didn't. I am like him. I may be improving but I am still not at the point I feel comfortable in certain clothes and certainly not shirtless. Maybe some day, but not now.

On a related topic. I have decided when I have my surgery I am going to get some battle ropes to do my workouts with. They are supposedly really good for cardio, and overall conditioning. You can do the workouts sitting on an exercise ball. Does anyone have any or know what I should be looking for. I have seen them in many different prices ranges but I am not spending $300 for some rope. I found some on titanfitness.com that look nice but they are on backorder and they give no estimated date of delivery so I am not going to give them my money and possibly not have them show up until October, when I can start biking again. Its probably not something anyone has but I figured it was worth asking.

I'm not going to change my time goal for this weekend's triathlon, but I'm not incredibly confident in it either as the forecast is calling for a heat index of 98ºF on race day...not sure how that run is going to feel! It is a cool distance we are doing though...'Long Course' is longer than the standard Olympic distance but not quite as long as a Half Ironman. The swim is 2000m, with a 56K bike (35 miles) and 15K run (nearly 10 miles), so it is a good test of the endurance fitness while still an opportunity to go pretty hard. I think my new goal might just be not puking :)

Good luck to everyone else racing!

Answer from yesterday: I am a late nighter on weekdays. So past 8:30pm at the gym or in the 7-8:30 range if running outside. Basically depends on the amount of sunlight as I do not want to run in the dark. Which is why all long runs are reserved for the weekends.

Also we say POP around here, but since I went to school in the south I can confirm the "what coke do you want" questions. Our household mainstay is squirt or diet squirt at parties because everyone always expects us to have it...a holdover from my husband growing up and he's still friends with all his same buddies from our original neighborhood. Did I ever mentioned that I married my neighbor?

I believe I understand your situation to some degree. I work for a steel mill in sales and I can tell you the amount of times monthly that someone over-buys, under-buys, or gets the incorrect size/length/grade/country of origin of tube, pipe, product etc. Even when it's not my fault and I cannot take the material back I always try to reach out to all my contacts to find a home for the material as much as I am able too, so I hope that you have some relationships (or know an outside sales rep) that you can reach out to in the same manner. Those people tend to come back to me for more orders because of the help. I may be totally off on the situation but it sounds familiar. But just letting you know that it happens a lot from my perspective.

ATTQOTD: When it is hot I really like the Target champion tanks because they have good length and I am a bit tall due to my torso being long. Most of my races have not been in very hot weather up to this point so it's been a lot of short sleeve stuff, but my fave is the tanks. I feel free-er in them. Always tech and I like it to be a little loose in the tummy area but not loose in the sleeve or chest area. And I hate anything that is tight around my neck. So I prefer v-neck or a nice scoop. I'm picky.

I also prefer a V or scoop neck. I have a nice V as part of my farmer tan. :D I am self conscious about my arms showing, but I think I will be cooler in a tank in the summer once I get over it, just like I am now on the bottom half once I got over being self conscious about my legs and started wearing SparkleSkirts instead of capris. Of course I apparently wear the capris often enough still on other days for walking or whatever that I have a faint tan line across my shin. So, from mid-shin upwards and elbow upwards, I am pasty pasty white.

@LSUlakes No goal for my race. I always want to sub-30 if I can muster it, but it will be HOT! Goal is to smile while inside Soldier Field to get good pictures even if I am dying. And so my kiddo in the stands doesn't think I'm dying :)
The course map just came out yesterday (why did it take so long?) and looks like we get to run up and down the football field which was unexpected! And we will be on the jumbotron too! I wonder if it will have protective covering on it or if they are gonna let us junk it???? Map attached for anyone interested. I'm excited.

I hope everyone has great races.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.
No specific shirt. Either an old race shirt or a tank top, sometimes with compression underneath. It takes severe nipple chafing to make me go topless as I feel a bit like a topless homer simpson and no one wants to see that.

ATTQOTD: Always tech material. I am currently wearing tanks mainly. When the temps drop, I wear short sleeves. In the winter I wear long sleeves. Most of my longer races have been in the cold, so I've worn the long sleeves. I tend to stay cold (I keep a heated throw in my office year round), so I don't really ever overheat in the long sleeves in the winter.

On a side note, I passed a guy running in pleated khaki shorts and a regular cotton tshirt yesterday. It was 5 pm, and around 90 outside. He looked like he was a seasoned runner, so I was baffled.

Also we say POP around here, but since I went to school in the south I can confirm the "what coke do you want" questions. So cool! I married my HS sweetheart and we never actually 'officially' dated...we were just best friends for a long time and spent all of our time together until one day I proposed to her. At least that's how we remember it :)

I'm not the smallest woman or the biggest. But I've always been curvy and 1000% understand you. Showing my arms was a huge hurdle. I've yet to really do it outside of running or swimming. Running gives me the excuse to just go for it with clothes. I figure I already have no makeup on and I'm sweating. But it really was seeing other women like me or even bigger rocking the tanks that made me go...they look strong and great...nothing weird or bad about it...I LIKED how they looked. So I hope myself wearing tanks and shorts will make other women think the same thing. Still feel weird after the race when I'm out and about...so yeah I pack safety dry shirts for my own self-consciousness. So I'm still not 100% over it.

I love stories like that. We didn't say it was an "official thing" until his senior year of college but it very much started how you said it...all of a sudden we couldn't remember not hanging out with each other :)

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

I wear tech shirts, either short or long sleeve depending on the weather, for daily runs and races. I feel like most tank tops are either too tight or too loose on me so I generally stick with sleeves. I bought a shirt from Raw Threads that has the bamboo material and wore it in the princess 10k this past February. I was surprised with how comfortable it felt during the race despite the material feeling a bit heavier compared to most tech shirts.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?
In summer/spring/fall I run in TekGear banded bottom racerback tanks which are tech shirts that don't ride up which is a problem do to my body shape even when I wear clothes fitted to me. I wear them both for day to day and races though I have some favorites that I usually wear for races. They look like this:
tek-gear-banded-bottom-racerback-workout-tank-womens-tart-berry-small

In the winter I usually run the 1/4 zip pullovers and a running jacket if necessary but for races I prefer to wear the tanks with the running jacket.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.

For me it really depends on the weather. But in general I wear tech fabric, t-shirts in warm weather and long sleeve in colder weather. It is the same for me in races and in general workouts.

I do have a superstition that I wear the race shirt from my most previous race at my next race. So this weekend when I toe the line for my trail half I will be in my Strawberry Festival 5k t-shirt. The only exception was Dopey last year where I had pre-planned race outfits instead of the new race shirts. Would have been too hot otherwise. But I will admit that the thought occurred in my brain during a very difficult marathon: "I jinxed myself I should be wearing the Donald shirt"...

I am sure the poor eating, lack of sleep and heat/humidity had nothing to do with it. It was the shirt!

Yesterday we drove a very long 12 hours to my parent's house in the Blue Ridge Mtns. I had my first run this morning on the gravel mountain roads. I love that it's so much cooler here than in Florida and the scenery is beautiful but the gravel was killing me. This should be an interesting 2 weeks of running.

Yesterday's ATTQOTD: the latest I have gone out is 8:30-9pm I don't like running in the dark it makes me extra paranoid.

ATTQOTD: I usually wear a tech shirt or a bamboo tank top for both training and races.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

Always tech fabric, sleeve length depending on weather. If I'm in short or long sleeves (as opposed to a tank), it's usually a shirt from a previous race.

I dress basically the same for training and races although usually will dress cooler (fewer layers/sleeves) for races.

ATTQOTD: I'm addicted to Raw Threads short-sleeved V-Necks! This morning I wore my pink 'Every Story Needs a Princess' shirt. I wore that one at the Princess 10K in February as well. They've got some special Orlando shirts available for the next couple of days with the proceeds going to charity. I see another order in my immediate future. :cutie:

I usually wear tech shirts but will wear cotton if that's part of my costume. I wore a black tech shirt for my half but wore a cotton shirt that I made for the 5K.

As for the soda question we just call it soda in Wisconsin. We always think people are weird when they come up from Illinois and call it Pop.

I'm from Illinois. I call it soda! :teeth:

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.
Always tech fabric. The amount of my skin covered depends on the weather. In the winter I do running tights, long sleeved tech shirt, running jacket, gloves, hat
Spring/Fall: short sleeved tech with a long sleeved on top and running tights or capris Summer: running shorts and tank/singlet.

We used to live by the Blue Ridge Mountains. I miss that part of the country- so beautiful!
