The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: No, no change of plans for us. We are taking our kids to London in August, and although we will be alert, as we always are, we will enjoy our trip to the fullest. We need to live our lives and show our kids the world is an amazing place to explore. Although at times of crisis fear is natural, we can't let it win.

So if you need to use us a your BFF for the day. Post here before you leave for your race, before your get in the starting line, once you finish, etc. We will be here rooting for you. Especially those of us (me) who get up way to early everyday due to my kiddo.

Peer pressure! I like it. ;) Thank you!

I hear you loud and clear. Being afraid is awful. I was there. But you know what scares me now that I broke through those walls, is going back to the way things used to be. There is nothing to be afraid of. It's a fun race and there are two possible outcomes. 1) you finish or 2) you don't. But you have NO CHANCE to finish if you don't show up to the start. If you need accountability you PM and I'll give you my cell phone number and you can text me til you start. I have done it for others so I'm happy to do it for you if you want.

Thank you! If I'm feeling iffy on race day I will definitely take you up on your kind offer. :) It's a night race so I have plenty of time to get to the start.

QOTD: With the recent events happing, have you considered a change to your plans for a upcoming trip (Running or just a vacation)? Are you less likely to go to a large scale event because of it?

No. There are things I believe our government could be doing to keep us safer, but I'll be going to WDW in January no matter what.

Added two more local races to the list on June 22 and July 13. There is a total of 5 during the summer at different locations around town. They are called Summer Series Hump Day 2 Milers. Low cost with 100 - 150 folks at each run. I see it as a good way to get in a nice hard run with some competition to keep me from slacking off.

Good morning folks. A little late getting to todays QOTD due to a Dr appointment. Dr has given the all clear for DW and I when we are ready to have our second! Very excited nothing was wrong. May be a little to much info out there...

That's awesome news!

ATTQOTD: No changing of plans for us. Big believer that fate is out of my control. Just want to make the most of what life has to offer and be a good example for kids.

Hi! I'm Ashley.

Until last weekend, I described myself a sprinter and "I can't even run a mile"

Then I decided on Friday night that "screw it" I'm going to run a 5k for the animals tomorrow. So I ran a 5k on Saturday (10:55 Mile, 33 minute finish)....and I think I caught running fever.... crossing that finish line having pushed myself so much felt awesome!

Anyhow, running fever, yes because, since then I signed up for two more 5k's (that I actually plan to train for, and not just chug a gatorade beforehand and hope for the best. hahaha) for this summer AND I convinced a few friends that we just have to run Disney, because I now apparently love running and I already love Disney. 3 days, three races booked (well, plane tickets for disney, since princess marathon isn't open yet).

Hope to post in this thread a bit now :)

[And if anyone has recommendations for shin splints, send them at me. 0 to 3.1 miles in a 4 year old pair of running shoes was not kind to my legs....]

Congrats @doctorintheTARDIS on your 5k!
NEW SHOES NEW SHOES NEW SHOES!!!

My legs were pretty sore my first month of running and that was even in brand new running shoes, so I know new shoes are not a cure all. But eventually after a couple of weeks my legs got used to it and I have not really experienced that feeling since. But NEW SHOES! are highly recommended to keep you injury-free.

Welcome @doctorintheTARDIS ! You'll find the group super awesome and welcoming - at least I have!

ATTQOTD: Add me to the "nope" column. Others have written about why much more eloquently than I.

@LSUlakes - finally got into the Rebel Challenge!!! yaaaaaay! The race that started it all (and I didn't even get in!). Can't wait to take in the sights and not race it.

Congrats on the race and welcome the thread! If you would like me to add the races you registered for to the OP, just let me know. About the shin splits, it's 100% shoes. Freeze a water bottle or some water in a Dixie cup and rub your shins with it. Good luck with everything.

You can try this (some runners swear by it): stand with your back against a wall, heels about 6 inches from the wall, and lift your toes as high as you can keeping your heels on the ground, and hold it for about a second. Do this 12-15 times before and after each run.

Also, definitely get new shoes. Good running shoes are much more important that people often think.

I had really bad issues with shin splints when I started running and have had them a few times when I have increased my mileage or the intensity of my workouts. My go to stretch sounds very similar to that described by @opusone, I've seen it called a heel drop: you stand with your toes and the front portion of your foot on a step and lower your heel toward the ground. Seems like essentially the same effect using gravity to help out a bit.

I've also found it important to mix in other forms of cardio in place of running that require less of a load on my legs. Mixing in elliptical, biking or swimming can help avoid putting so much stress on your shins. Runners World magazine has had some useful articles on shin splints and their website is searchable, so if you are looking for further tips, illustrations or possibly video of useful information that could be a resource.

Echoing everyone else: nope. I live near and work in a big city. Just gotta live life.

@LSUlakes would you please add my upcoming races to the first post? :thanks:

July 23 Twilighter 5K (23:50/na)
August 28 Annapolis Ten Mile Run (1:27:30/na)
September 18 Navy Air Force Half Marathon (1:50:00/na)
November 5 Wine & Dine 10K (NG/na)
Nov 6 Wine & Dine Half (NG/na)

Thanks to everyone above for the advice!!!!

I bought new shoes roughly an hour after I ran across the finish line! I was going to buy some the night before (when I decided to run the 5k) but thought that a pair of not broken in shoes may have been more damaging.

When the guy at the running store asked to have me run on the thread mill to video tape my feet...I was pretty sure I was gonna die. That 5k wiped me out. I'll be better next time with training though :D

I got a ton of blisters too. Those are apparently the socks I'm wearing.

So I left the running store with $200 in gear for my feet.

The plan is to start my 18 week 10k training on Friday. Hoping my legs/muscles/body will be restored enough by then :D

$200 in gear is just the beginning! :) Welcome to the group and good luck with your training/races!

Welcome. I agree new shoes are important. One possible cause of shin splints can be tight calf muscles, it was for me. Stretching my calves helped me.

I also agree, $200 is just the beginning. My sneakers cost me $150 alone, and I need a few pairs a year.

Welcome, Whovian! I'd say to you got off easy only $200 down... Be ready! There's a lot more gear to catch your eye as you get more into it. You have been warned! :upsidedow

Also some advice... Do your online research on preventing running injuries. Lots of great resources from Runners World, Competitor.com, Active.com, and many others. Avoid the classic pitfall: Too far, too fast, too soon. Look up good warm up routines, and also Active Isolated Stretching on Youtube. There are magical unicorns that have never been hurt, but the rest of us mere mortals will experience something at some point, and believe me it ain't fun.

That's not to scare you! It's just something I wish someone had told me before my first ITBS.

So welcome to the club (one of us... one of us...) and have fun out there!
