The Running Thread - 2016

Today is a high of 89F and I didn't look ahead so I could plan a run this morning. It's gonna be hot!

ATTQOTD - I always walk for awhile after my run as a cool down. Maybe a 1/2 mile or more, nothing exact. I don't stretch much anymore, only if something feels tight then I'll stretch very carefully and then stick roll or massage.

For warmup, I just start out slow for the first 1/2 mile or more depending on how I feel. In summer it's seems to be less time compared to winter where the whole run feels like a warmup.

Just signed up for a 12-week "summer" race series with a local run club. Starts next Thursday night! 12 weeks of a 5K every Thursday night - it's going to be fun, but it's also going to be HOTHOTHOTHOTHOT. I'm hoping that helps my conditioning, though, so ... bonus?

The guy that runs this run club was also the chairman of our local big Marathon Weekend and he does quite a few other smaller events. I'm going to start working with him for local run events (planning, communication, execution) in an effort to get a feel for what goes into organizing races (I'd love to do this for a living one day!) - and in exchange, he's going to coach me once a week in speed/track workouts.

That's a good deal you made. Running a 5k a week will do wonders for you. When I ran CC we had a meet every weekend, and nearly every race was an improvement over the last. Then you get speed work on the track with a coach to add to it. So as long as you get a semi long run in along the way, your PR should drop a good bit! Good luck.

I have this same problem, the LSU baseball game started at 8PM and finished around 11:15PM last night. Waking up early for a run wasn't going to happen. Looks like another TM run today.

I just love starting a run at 4:30am and the temp is already 78. Yuck, was it a wet sloggy mess this morning.

We are not there yet, but it wont be long. Olaf is crazy for wanting summer.

That sounds not very fun. You need one of those portable misting machines!
The Central Virginia Accu-Weather report had 58 degrees at 5:15 this morning but on our way to 90 today. My goal is to finish my run as the sun is coming up to beat the heat.

QOTD: When at Disney, but not for a running event, what are some good running routes you have run or heard of? Can you run on the shoulder of roads?

ATTQOTD: After the marathon this year I managed to get one run in from the Wilderness lodge. They have a nice trail that leads to the campgrounds (which I got lost in). Saw a lot of wildlife and was surprised how tamed the deer are. Not sure what kind of deer they are, but they are small. Did see one white tail which is common in this area. Overall nice route.

I take a break from running while we are at Disney World, because we are commando style park go-ers. There is literally no time to squeeze a run in. I'm sure as the number of visits increase though that will change, so I am anxious to hear these responses!

I've only ever stayed on-site at WDW during Marathon Weekend and I haven't really had the desire to go looking for extra mileage during those stays. I will say that the paths along the river and throughout POR look like they would have been a nice place to get in a run if I wasn't already running 13.1, 26.2 or 48.6 miles during our stays.

ATTQOTD: I love running around CBR - pretty, mostly shaded in the early morning, long enough that it only takes a few loops to cobble together a decent run. For long runs, I've done the Boardwalk/path to DHS/outer EP resorts loop a bunch of times - good for very early mornings, but gets a little too traffic-y for my taste by 8am. SSR is good for running, especially combined with DSprings, and I had a really great run in "Germany" on the fancy treadmill at SSR's fitness center. Combining POR and POFQ can be nice, too. I've run the back road at AKL that you're not supposed to be on - that was neat! Loved running WL to FW and back.

Nope, other than that little stretch of the outer EP resorts loop that has no sidewalk, no way will I run on WDW roads - I don't trust tourists behind the wheel! ;)

Of the places we have stayed at the best route I have found is the Old Key West/LBV Golf Course/Saratoga Springs/Disney Springs link-up. It's a good long stretch with plenty of sights to see...I only recommend adding in Disney Springs early in the morning as it is too busy to run there any other time. Last time I ran there was mid-day and it was smokin' hot...I actually raced one of the groundskeepers at the golf course for a little stretch, she was driving her tractor and came up behind me while I was running an interval so we decided to race. We were both laughing pretty hard afterwards. Okay, she was laughing...I was trying not to puke! I ended that run by jumping in the pool with the kids at OKW, a great way to finish up a hot run!

Oh good, I'm not the only one that runs on the outlawed back road at AKL :)

Yes I did! I got an awesome one and had a ring made out of it. Felt uber bad for the little guy; pretty sure they toss the oysters. Too much contamination at that point to feed to guests I would assume! Of course, I eat steamed oysters by the dozen like they are going out of style, so lol I guess I only felt bad wasting it.

I heard (and it was from a person standing near them, so totally an unreliable source) that they are not alive in the tank. I don't know how true that is. I really wanted one last trip but we didn't have the time for getting it set (ADR at mexico and then had to get back to the hotel in time for I don't even remember.) I probably should have still done it and just taking the pearl home. But I did end up with a different necklace from main street so still walked away with some bling.

That's really cool! I bet you will do great at that.

ATTQOTD: We did not run this route, but we walked it with a stroller. There's a running path at the Contemporary and it has little signs with Mickey running on them. You'd have to run a lot of laps to get any kind of mileage. BUT I would think you could add in the path from BLT to the Magic Kingdom and back for fun.

It's a little slice of quiet, non-Disney heaven, isn't it?!
Oh ya, for sure...I remember wondering the first time I ran it if I could find a spot to sneak through somewhere to Orange Lake Resort and run through there to the nice wide sidewalks of 192. There might be a way but I never found it. Like you, there's NO WAY I'm running on the shoulders of the roads at Disney.

ATTQOTD: Last year we went right when my marathon training was reaching its highest mileage. It was a 50 mile week. I got in 25 of those miles looping POR and POFQ. It's actually a pretty decent loop that's just under 2 miles. I will be doing it again this year too. I'm afraid of the edge of the road around WDW.

The more important question of the day should be: Has anyone worn this outfit while utilizing the running trails around WDW? Personally, I have my wind suit packed already for our trip. image.png

If I'm not there for a running event, I'm probably there for eating and drinking. Okay, I do plenty of that when I'm there for a race too, but if there's no race, for me there's no running. I enjoy making the most out of my vacations.
