The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: today's question is a little specific to folks who run with pushing a stroller. What type of stroller do you run with and when running do you push with one hand or two, alternating between both hands?
No stroller no kids lol

Well I'm in high school so my parents help a bit. Otherwise I work for some friends of ours who own a company selling roasted nuts (yes the candied sugar kind) so I work for them at our local baseball stadium (Miller park) and local basketball/hockey arena (the Bradley center).
Cradle Yankees fan, but Brewers are my National team - love Miller park!

ATTQOTD: we have a Bob. Alternate with both hands. Two hands only for uneven terrain.
We primarily babywear, and only use the stroller (BOB se) as a back-up for long walks. I do alternate hands when we use it though.

Bob for us too. I typically only use my right hand (rarely the left for 30 sec spurts every once in a while). Although, lately I haven't used it. It hasn't been warm enough and daughter prefers runs under 60 min (which doesn't happen frequently these days). It also messes with my gait, so I don't like to use it when I'm this close to race day.

It's been about 8 years since I last used a jogging stroller, but I believe we had a Burley back then. The front wheel was fixed, and the stroller had a very slight right turn; therefore, I mostly used my right hand to push because that would almost perfectly offset the right turn tendency. I would, however, alternate every so often.

I've been traveling for work this week so missed a few QOTDs.

1. I'm a marine biologist who also has expertise in coastal/beach, estuary, and wetland systems.

2. Work travel in March has been crazy so I'm only at 54.1 miles. My work travel means lots of field work so I'm often too exhausted to run while traveling.

3. No kids, no stroller. And my Labrador doesn't fit in one! :)

Good luck to those who are racing this weekend!!

I recently ordered some of those Race Dots magnetic bib holders to try out. Hopefully they'll be here before my 5 miler next Sunday. :) I don't really like to pin things to my shirts, but I do do it for the plain old ones I've bought, but not any of my rD stuff or other printed race shirts. I don't mind pinning to my capris when I wear those, they're just cheap Old Navy ones, but I really don't want to be pinning to my Sparkle Skirts.

I use the Race Dots and really like them. It takes a little effort to get them in place the first few times, but once you get the hang of it, they're much better than pins.

I have a love/hate relationships with RaceDots. I love running with them instead of having to pin things to my tech clothes but I hate getting them in place and aligned! I am getting ready to try the little tabs that Amphipod has on their race belts so it'll be interesting to see how they work out.

It does take some time to get the hang of it, but they beat pins! I don't know if I'd like a bib pinned to my belt. Then it would hit my legs over and over.

I tried them once, and have to say I wasn't a fan. I hope you have better luck than me with them. Mine currently are used on the fridge.

I ordered some Event Clips from the UK and I love them! They are like a 2 piece snap - one side goes under fabric and the other goes on top and they "snap" together. They leave a tiny dimple that washes out. I've used them for 3 races and other than figuring out how to get them on straight I have had zero issues. I used them today on my Sparkle Skirt and I will most likely never put a bib on my shirt again. I was able to wear a tank and running hoodie that I tied around my waist when I got hot. They were like $5 with shipping. :)

My running club got us Event Clips as part of our goodie bag for signing up with the club. I was kinda skeptical at first, but have used them in about 8 races so far, and will keep using them over pins. My biggest issue is the same, trying to get the bib straight when getting them attached. Still takes two or three attempts before I am happy.

I don't worry too much about getting it straight, as long as it's mostly close and the bib is not puckering in the middle because I didn't pull it across far enough before pinning. :D I'll check out the clips too, thanks!

Yeah that was my issue. Much easier on my Sparkle Skirt cuz I just lined them up with the waistband seam. I had to do it while wearing it and it took a couple tries but worked great. :)

AATQOTD: I used to push two of my kids in a Bob Iron Man duallie. When I moved to just one kid with me on my runs, I used a Phil and Ted's which I loved even more (maybe I just loved pushing one kid versus two!). Now it is very rare that I need to take my daughter. But when I do, I can only walk/run since she is 5 and I'm not that fit!

I watched McFarland USA today for the first time. I have to say it was better than I thought it would be. I always like when they do the "where are they now" things at the end too.

We still need to watch that one!

Have you tried installing them before you put the shirt on? That's a trick I learned with the RaceDots. I lay the shirt out on a bed or other flat surface and attach the bib with it laying flat. That way I can adjust and align it straight without having to mess with something on me. Have to be a little careful putting the shirt on after, but that's a small inconvenience by comparison.

Made it to Disney today!! My daughters are performing and attending classes on Monday so we get tomorrow and then Tuesday-Thursday to play in the parks. There are about 20 family's from the dance studio here and over the last week it has been so funny to see how excited the parents were for Disney, not just the kids!

QOTD: What is your total mileage for March?

My milage is up from last month, but still not where it needs to be moving towards some more distance races this spring, summer and fall. March total = 127.

QOTD: today's question is a little specific to folks who run with pushing a stroller. What type of stroller do you run with and when running do you push with one hand or two, alternating between both hands?

Sadly my running stroller days are done, been three-four years since we sold it. Daughters are 8 and 13 now. So no stroller rides, but the younger one runs with me a few times a month and I love that!

Answers to the last couple QOTD:

-Just noticed an e-mail with my mileage for March (was too lazy to add it up): 92.8. Not bad, April will be a big month with a Half coming in mid-May.

-I have only ever pushed my niece and nephew in a double jogger stroller up hills to give my sister a break on the few runs we have done while taking them. I don't have kids, so I have no idea on the brand (edit: Looks like it is a BOB), but it is orange and it seems pretty nice. I use both hands because I am pushing it uphill and want better control in that situation.

Stroller Tangent-This stroller is a replacement stroller for one (exact same model) that was stolen at Disney a couple years ago. My family (10 of us) were at MK and as we were taking the kids on the carousel at around 11:30 AM we parked their stroller in one of the designated areas; when we came back, it was gone. We searched the park for a couple hours and realized relatively quickly there was a similar, but slightly different model and not nearly as well-maintained, stroller that remained at the stroller parking. After logging a report with security, they got notification at around 5 PM that all of their stuff (sweatshirts, cooler w/kids snacks, etc.) that had been left with the stroller had been turned-in to lost and found. We left that day having had our afternoon pretty much ruined by the stroller fiasco and it is possibly the only truly negative experience I've had at Disney. The next day they were called in to retrieve their stroller that had been "found" and it was, of course, the other stroller. They explained that the stroller was definitely not theirs and that they weren't interested in taking it as a replacement. I don't think anything ever came of it after that; they replaced their stroller on their own and had a sour taste about how Disney had handled the issue for a while. We all understand that Disney's hands were kind of tied in the situation, but the whole "Hey, this stroller's kind of like yours, why don't you just take it?" thing was really bizarre and upsetting. As was the idea that someone's solution to accidentally taking the wrong stroller (here's hoping it was, at least, an accident) was to dump all of the other people's stuff and carry on like everything was normal.

Super happy with my race today! I went out fast (for me!) and first mile was under 12:00. First time ever! Managed to keep up a pretty great pace and finished at 1:16:02, 12:03 average pace and an 8:32 PR from my last 10k in October!

Way to go! That's an amazing improvement!

ATTQOTD: My kids are long past stroller pushing days. I didn't run when they were little. :)

Ran the Bentonville half yesterday with a goal of a sub 2:30. I finished at 2:27:18. YAY!! I wasn't really confident of that due to some tendonitis in my knee over the last few weeks, but it's been steadily improving. Combine that with a course that is basically all uphill from mile 10 on (with part of that hill being ridiculously steep) and I'm pretty darn happy with that. It was an absolutely beautiful day. High 30's at start time and roughly mid to upper 40s at race finish. Ran our :90/:30 intervals with a few extra walks thrown in on that last hill. We got a short sleeve tech shirt at the expo with our bibs and then got a long sleeve tech shirt that says "I conquered the hill" on the back once we finished. All in all a really good race and we got to spend time with some really good friends who live in Bentonville. Fantastic weekend.
