The Running Thread - 2016

November mileage was 96 miles. Had to cut some longer runs short due to feeling sick from stomach vs. goo issues.

The weirdest running related gift I received was last year for Christmas. My husband gave me one of those balls that you aren't supposed to use to massage your feet. It was really spikey and kinda hurt when you would roll your foot back and forth on it. Even he thought it was a bad gift once he tried it out.

I love my spiky ball and use it quite a bit. It is especially good on my calf muscle that gets spasms!

Balegas are all I wear, even for every day. I am not even going to count how many pair I have and do the math on the cost. I do always try to get them when they are buy one/two, get one free.
I love my Balegas but I just bought a pair of Feetures to try out. Even though the socks are expensive, if you take care of them, they will last forever.

I'll say this again: I'm so impressed with everyone who runs in these temps! Or hot and humid temps in the summer. I'm a wimp. :worship:

I am too! I need 40's-50's to feel human. I did a race last year that was 35/40 at the start and my legs felt like lead and my knees hurt so bad. Then I warmed up but the air was still cold so I was both sweaty and cold at the same time. I was not a happy camper!

Question, any tips on not starting too fast on long training runs? Got my 20 in today and I really tried to start slow but I didn't really? After mile 15 I had no problems slowing down to the pace I wanted the whole time, but I did fade a bit 18-20. Thanks.

I do stare down at my Apple Watch for the pace quite frequently. I'd like to get past that because typically for the the first 5-8 miles I can almost zone out thinking about the day ahead or something else. Looking at my watch every 30 seconds removes that of course. I also feel at the beginning that I can't possibly be going as fast as it says which of course is different at the end when I'm thinking I must be going faster :).

I just went over my splits form yesterday and mile 8 was within 10 seconds of mile 18 and the 10 in between were all fairly close. 1-5 was about a minute faster and 18-20 were a minute slower. So obviously I need to work on the first 5. I'm thinking more practice at a slower pace will on shorter runs will help.

When I first started out on the "go slow" long run training methodology (like Galloway's 2 min slower long run) it was definitely an adjustment. So it'll take time before it feels more normal/natural. But to add to other suggestions, when I was first learning this technique I would check my "lap pace" every 0.25 miles or so to adjust the pace. The key in my opinion is using "lap pace" rather than "instantaneous pace". But if I saw I was too fast at 0.25 miles, then I slowed down. It comes with time. But overall it sounds like you were pretty close to some even splits, so well done. That and starting slower will pay dividends on race day.

I'd caution looking at the watch too much because those micro adjustments to pace can be mentally fatiguing which could then lead to an increase in perception in effort without a decrease in physical capabilities. So ideally, over many months and years you'll eventually train yourself to be capable of deciding on a pace mentally and then just running that consistently for miles and miles within a very tight window. It's all about training that internal GPS.

@LSUlakes i agree with @Mimsy Borogove thay the port area may be the toughest. We got off the ship in Nassau for the first time in June and the port area was too much for us. And then we had to wait in a line for 30 minutes or so to go through security to get back on the ship. Bonus at sea day for us! I may run around Key West in a few weeks but for the most part I just suck it up and hit the treadmill on the ships.

November mileage:
125.1 - about 5 short of my 130 mile goal. Chose to take a couple of days off after the Thanksgiving Day Half, and ended up taking the week off until Dec. 1 while I was out of town with the siblings dividing up the estate/ cleaning out my daddy's house. They don't understand my training, and I didn't want to go off for a run and give them a chance to talk about how crazy I am behind my back ! So I am satisfied with the mileage.

My husband ran his 20th race of the year today! He went downstairs to the mancave to pick a celebratory beer and I found this. He's sorting our beer treasures methodically. He's got a lot more to go. I think he's gonna be down here awhile.

Guess we're gonna have to keep running more so we can celebrate more?

If you would like to revise your goal or for some reason unable to run this weekend, just let me know and I will make the adjustment. If anyone wants to be added to the list, feel free to let me know and I will add you to the list as well. Good to luck to everyone and have a great race!

I decided to run my half this weekend. It is not going to be pretty, but I wanted to keep the streak alive. This year will be my 5th consecutive run of the BRB1/2. It could also end up being my slowest, but I am not overly concerned about it as I know where I am at training wise.

Good race this morning! Finished my 5K in 23:33 - 17 seconds faster than my goal and a 47 second PR! :D It was 39 degrees for the race but it was dry and the winds were fairly calm, so not terrible for December. I arrived earlier than I needed to, and they ended up starting the race 10 minutes late because people were still picking up their bibs, so my fingers and toes were numb by the time the race started. And didn't defrost until after it was over. Other than that, though, the race was well organized, and the course was mostly flat around the Tidal Basin in DC. I'd definitely run this one again.

I love my science. You know me too well. I also love my perceived effort. I like to use HR data to evaluate post-run, but not so much during the run. However, I'm always willing to read and evaluate new information. I'll add it to my list. It will be interesting to see how they lay out the slow vs fast training methodology. Full disclosure, I've never read Fitzgerald's 80/20 book, but I did read the scientific paper by Seiler that it was based on.

I do know you like your science and that's why it surprises me that you don't love HR training. It is measurable whereas perceived effort has a lot of grey area and unknowns. But, it works for you. But I still think you will like a lot of info from this book and it will help you when putting together plans for everyone.

Switching gears a little bit but I made this little video in the weeks leading up up to Ironman Florida this year. I thought I shared it here but I don't think I ever did. Anyway, enjoy.

I didn't get to watch this the other day. I just got to now. Nice video. Did you do that race?

Here's proof that truth is stranger than fiction or even this board. I thought the would you rather this or that QOTD was all in good fun and fiction until I found out:

My little town here is hosting a"Too Slow For Boston" marathon in April. In what promises to be a little slice of Hell, the course consists of 25 x 1.048 mile laps around the park adjacent to my neighborhood! It's a nice park, but really!?

I thought the choice between a dull out and back course vs 26 laps of a scenic mile was a funny choice. Less so now that I've seen the reality...

After 25 laps you're definitely not going to think it's a nice park anymore!

Although it could be worse: I once did a 13 mile training run on an indoor track at my gym (it was 10 degrees and snowing outside). It's 12 laps to a mile, so 156 laps. :crazy2: I like doing short runs on the track because it's a good way to keep an eye on speed, but I've now got an 8 mile limit.

My parking lot route in Erbil is roughly 1 mile. I can tell you from experience (here's a 16-mile run) an out and back course is always going to be my preferred option. :)

Anyone doing Rocket City Marathon this weekend?

I've done it the last 4 years, but am just spectating this year. It is my favorite marathon. In fact, I consider it my 'home' marathon even though I live 4 hours away.

Happy Monday everyone :-)

We did our first 5k as a family yesterday for a local charity run in town -- it was even my husband's first 5K! We had a double stroller -- and DD1.5 slept the whole time, and DD5 rode in the stroller and ate cookies (she ran a few times, but unfortunately, her little leggings kept falling down -- oops!! Haha!) We jogged and walked, -- actually jogged more than I thought we would. We finished in 37:26-- which I was actually pretty happy with, and it was really fun to get out and do it as a family!
