The Running Thread - 2016

You don't run in real life? How do I get to the fake life for my running? :)
Running isn't a necessary life function to me, unlike getting up, eating, walking to do work & chores. So yes running is like an alternate world to me....versus everyday living. There's my running life and then there's my everyday living life, which is where most my accidents happen.

So for anyone wondering I often pull QOTD from personal experiences. I figured if I had an experience its likely someone here has as well and learning how they handled the situation can help me out as well as those who may not have yet had a similar experience can learn what to or not to do. Well, todays QOTD will be one of those. I am going to show just how goofy I am.

QOTD: Have you ever had a accident while out for a run? (This isn't bathroom related, but if that's a story you want to share, go for it!)

ATTQOTD: I'll get right to it. Started my run before sunrise on a route I have run 100's of times before. A part of the paved path curves around some trees and like I have done many times before I cut out the path and just run on the dirt/roots/rocks for 10 yards, then back on the paved path. Well I misjudged a step and busted my butt. Not a little fall, but full blown face in the dirt, very foul language out my mouth fall. Just as I was sliding across the dirt my watch did alert me I made mile 1, so of course I paused it while laying on the ground to compose myself. I fellow runner passing by stopped and asked if I was ok, which I thought I was and I started to get up and let him know I was good. As I was dusting myself off, I felt something that was out of place. I look down at my hand and my ring finger on my right hand at the last joint is pointing towards my middle finger. I was like oh nooooo. This is not good, not good at all. My thought process was, will its dislocated or broken, and really not much a Dr. can do for it that I cant do right here. So I pull the finger out and back to its normal position. Then I was still a .75 miles away from my truck. I figured why walk I will run there and see just how bad it really is. Got to my truck without much issues, cleaned off my hydration bottles that had dirt, turned mud on them and kept my hand in my ice chest while I called DW to bring tape to our tailgate and let her know what happened. She said, so what are you going to do now. I said, well I have a little more than 14 miles left to run and its just to nice of a day not to do it. Proud to say I finished the 16 miles and it turned out to be one of those long runs, that when I finished I felt like I could have kept going for many more miles. I had some other minor cuts and bruises but nothing major. Sunday my finger was black and blue and very swollen, but has since returned to a more natural color. Still swollen, today and I will give it a few more days to see what happens before going to get a Dr. to look at it.

Yikes! That is horrible! You are both crazy and awesome. There is no way I would have finished that run.

ATTQOTD: occasional rolled ankles and I did trip and fall once (broke the fall withy hands and not my face, luckily). Nothing too bad so far, known on wood.

Hope that finger gets better soon @LSUlakes! I would have called it quits for the day! :)

I have a very bad habit of walking/running on the edge of the sidewalk, so rolled ankles happen to me a lot. Nothing too terrible since I've started running, but I am so sensitive to sprains at this point that I almost have a heart attack every time I do it.

ATTQOTD: During a trail run recently I was going across a footbridge. It had been raining and the bridge was slick. I put my right foot down and slide right off the edge of the bridge ending up in knee deep pond water and weeds. Almost lost my shoes trying to get out of that goopy water!

Worst part I still had several miles to get back to the car, very squishy miles.

And this is why I am not a trail runner. I am so accident prone, I don't really need to help it along by running on uneven surfaces!

Thanks! I have no idea what is going on with the results, other than it poured during the race and maybe they had snafus with the timing??? The awards were small Christmas ornaments and I'm sure they already handed them out (we didn't stay for the award ceremony) so I really have no idea. I may be the annoying person who emails them by the end of the week, but I'm afraid of a bruised ego if I'm like way down the list in actual placement :)

ATTQOTD: All my accidents so far are while walking around and not related to running..yet. Unless there's something I've blocked out and am forgetting. I do bruise myself at least twice a week running into walls or tables...not running related.

Same here. Most of mine come from walking around. I am extremely accident prone. My major accidents have not really happened during running, but they have certainly impacted my running.

This is exactly what happened to me - one week before the Disney Marathon this year. Heading out for my 8 miler and slipped on some ice, just like in the cartoons - feet up in the air and came crashing down on my right butt cheek. I thought my dreams of running my first marathon were over, but fortunately a week later I was okay, just a softball sized bruise every color of the rainbow.

September mileage: 93 miles, plus yoga 2 to 3 times a week. As always, my totals should be a little more, but family obligations have to come first.

Congrats @DopeyBadger on your marathon PR's!!!

I will run in just about any weather conditions except ice. As soon as that stuff starts to freeze, it's onto the treadmill I go!

ATTQOTD- nothing major but I have had several running accidents over the years.......try to withhold laughter until the end of the presentation:

1>running under a bridge and stepped in a pothole at MCM....twisted ankle.....pain arrived.....limped along for a while before walking last 6 miles
2>out for a scheduled run in my neighborhood and took the turn at a cul-de-sac too wide and ran into a mailbox (just like the cartoons!)
3>about a month later, ran into same mailbox!
4>not sure how to categorize this and I really hate to share this again........fell out of a porta-potty at the Shamrock HM in Va. Beach......opened the door and missed the curb and just went down and rolled over on my back. Got quite a few cheers from the crowd. Luckily it has not surfaced on YouTube.

That is horrible! Now I am going to be more careful coming out of those porta-potties!

OMG I forgot about the most traumatizing one...blocked it out.
I dropped my water bottle and stepped on it and rolled onto my back like a turtle at planet fitness in front of rows of tread mill people. A beefy dude came by to check if I was dead or not. I shook it off and got on a treadmill and had my run, but I was so embarrased. I had a good case of carpet burn too.

Sept. mileage: 110 miles

ATTQOTD: Only one running-related accident and it was minor, but stupid. Running a new-to-me neighborhood, about 7 miles into a 17 miler I turned to cross a street and noted to myself, "Self, look at that big pothole! Make sure you don't run into it." And then I ran into it. Turned my ankle, but no pain or injury sustained. I just felt like a moron, lol!

OMG - this just reminded me that I have fallen on a treadmill too! Must've been the summer after my sophomore year of college, and I must have blocked it out too! :faint:

It's all coming back to me now...

Okay, I'll come clean. I fell off a NON-MOVING treadmill. The BFF and I had just finished our session on the TM and as I went to step off of mine, I guess I wasn't paying any attention and misjudged the distance to the floor, and BOOM! Down onto the floor I went. Thankfully it was a weekend morning and there was no one there to laugh - except for the BFF. She pointed and laughed before seeing if I was alright. :rotfl: I ended up with a terribly sprained ankle.

PS... Total Newbie Question: I don't have a running watch and have noticed I can get a Garmin Forerunner 220 for a good deal. Is it not smart to get an older model? I don't want a smart watch or HR monitor.

The 220 is still a great watch. I loved the one I had and only moved up to the 235 for the on wrist HR monitor. If you can get a good deal it's a great place to start until (or if) you decide the extra functionality of a newer one.

I agree with @camaker that the 220 is a great watch, so if you have deal and don't need any additional functionality, I say go for it.

ATTQOTD: I have fallen three times, all on trail runs. Twice I had skinned knees; the first time nobody saw me. The second time, bikers saw me fall and said that I looked like a dying roach with my feet up in the air. The third time I tripped over something, and DH found me on the trail unconscious. I had my first ambulance ride and ended up in the emergency room until about midnight with a subarachnoid hemorrhage. I apparently hit my head on a rock or root. At least it didn't hurt my hip, knee, or ankle. I ran the Atlanta 10 miler two weeks later. I think I told you all about it this time last year! Anyway, for once it paid to have a hard head!

I love my 220. I thought I wanted to upgrade to a 235, but I got an armband HRM to pair with the 220, and I think I like it better than having to make sure the wrist one stays flat on my wrist. I wear the armband (Scosche Rhythm+) on my upper arm above my bicep.

ATTQOTD: Rolled my ankle a time or two but nothing really bad. To be honest, my worst running injury happening coming down the stairs to leave for a run. I was gong too fast and one foot just slipped out from under me. One leg stayed straight and the other bent back ackwardly. Got an awesome bruise on my butt and great carpet burns on one leg. My pride hurt more than anything else as one of my two year olds came running around the corner screaming and laughing "momma fall down!"

September miles: 77

QOTD: What are your running goals for the month of October?

October is scheduled to be a big month for me with the following goals:
1. A new weekly mileage PR. Currently 55.05, I have planned 56, 59, & 64.
2. A new monthly mileage PR. Current - 171.63. If everything goes perfect I should hit near 250.
3. A new half marathon PR. Current - 1:39:28, race is 10/16. Goal around 1:35:00
4. Stay injury free!

QOTD: What are your running goals for the month of October?

My main goal is to stick to my training program. September was terrible for running as we were at WDW over 2 weekends and I was a slacker and didn't get in my long runs. I had planned on running the Little Rock 13.1 race this weekend but it would require switching my program up and I have decided to skip some races that conflict with it, ie I am only scheduled for a 4 mile long run this weekend. My plan, if I can stick to it, it to only run races if they line up with the scheduled mileage on my training program.
And second goal, as always, stay injury free!

ATTQOTD: My main goal is to get myself across the finish line of my 15k on 10/30 to earn my chocolate bar medal.
My second goal is to finish that race feeling really strong and comfortable (but getting across the finish line in any manner is most important.)

I have some challenging (for me) training runs coming up before taper time and I want to make sure I don't psych myself out and just go for them.
