The Running Thread - 2016

I have a 5K tomorrow. I'm walking it, because I'm really not ready to run that far yet. I wish I was running, but at least I'm doing it.
.

No one says you can't walk until you are ready to run, so you could pick a start point later in the race. Even if it's just the last mile or just across the finish. Have fun!!!

Anyway. Thanks for all the well wishes, y'all. Didn't really mean to drop a picture and run, but pain meds make it hard to be eloquent.

Anyway. Got home from California lay Tuesday (after being off my feet almost all of Sunday, quite a bit on Monday, and then all day again Tuesday), and felt the worst I've ever felt. I'd been texting with my aunt, who passed along some of my symptoms to the senior orthopedist in her practice (she does PT and has basically orchestrated all of my PT throughout my various surgeries), and he encouraged me to go get a set of x-rays done so I could get the ole insurance referral to come see him.

I figured my ankle was just a sprain, but after the x-rays were taken, the doctor discovered two stress fractures near an area I had a screw put in about 14 years ago. So, what's up gel cast and crutches! I'm stuck with those bad boys for at least two weeks, until I get another set of x-rays and hopefully transition to a walking boot.

As for my hip, it's still swollen badly, but is likely a Grade II/III sprain. I'm scheduled for an MRI next week to determine if there is any fraying or tearing in the labral area ... but, as for now, I'm just laying low and on a lot of delightful pain meds.

:(

Really sorry to hear this - hope you are able to recover soon.

In the spirit of "Keeping it Optimistic", I started planning out my new Dopey plan, provided I'm cleared to begin training on a day the doctor and I previously discussed.

Obviously, 11 weeks isn't the ideal training time frame for Dopey, but I definitely think with the Higdon plan it's doable. I'll be at a roughly six week deficit with a longest run of 18 and no taper, but I feel confident.

Last year, I followed the plan to the letter (and even did an extra sim week because I was nervous), and in the end I felt like I overdid back-to-backs and don't do enough to focus on the marathon. We'll see how it goes this time around ...

Now, for my body to just heal on schedule!

You had Chicago coming up right? Is that one you can defer or are you just out on it? Good to hear you are optimistic on Dopey though, best to go in a undertrained some than hurt I always figure!

Yeah. I filed for deferral on Friday. That was definitely a sad day.

I had my Rock the 80's race yesterday morning. When I read the event details I was sure I knew where it was located. Oops. Instead of being held at the local community college, it was being run at the school's secondary site. So I was already running about half an hour later than I'd wanted to leave and then spent an extra 20 minutes getting to the correct location. I arrived about 5 minutes before the start and as I was racewalking to get my bib I heard the announcer saying that all the streets weren't yet closed and we'd be starting 5 minutes late. Phew. I got my bib and safety pins and race shirt and booked it back to my car to dump the shirt and grab my sunglasses. Thinking back, that was a pretty good warmup. I got to the starting line with only a minute to spare. I was surprised by the low turnout, although I guess I shouldn't have been because the race was only announced about a month ago.

Even with the stress of getting to the start on time, I had a very good race. I ran my fastest mile, 5k and 10k according to my Garmin. My official time was 1:26:03 (13:52 pace). The farthest that I'd run to that point was 4 miles in this training cycle. The extra 2.2 miles were about as hard as I figured they'd be. Not horrible, but not easy. I stopped to walk about 10 seconds in both mile 5 and 6 and then picked it back up and ran again.

Now that the 10k portion of my training is complete, it's on to the half marathon! Woot!

Good! I think you're super smart to stick with what you know has worked in the past.

Maybe it's not an ideal length of time, but (at least in my experience) the knowledge that you have done it before will help SO much.

Yup. I really love the Higdon plans - even though the mileage can build quickly, it doesn't seem daunting. Plus, while there is a slight emphasis on flipping between paces, it's not entirely dependent on drastic pace changes which makes it feel much more manageable when trying to build up mileage.

No time goals for me (obviously), but at least I know this plan will put me in position to achieve my other goals - like finishing, having fun and riding EE at Mile 13!

We had a fun run doing the Run the Rock 6-miler in Branson, MO. It's a beautiful run including a short portion through a cave. I did a mini race report on my training journal if you want to read.

Here's a sneak peek at part of the course.

@Keels heres to a speedy recovery

I have to be better win keeping up around here! I get so behind and then can't seem to catch up....

If you can't run outside do you run at the gym? I hate the treadmill, but as I've just gotten into running I don't really want to not run for long periods of time. I would need to join a gym....or buy a treadmill

I actually walked the whole thing and I'm hurting. Ugh...this is so frustrating. I finished though! I could have used a million excuses to sit at home.

I run on the treadmill if I can't go outside. With the heat and my allergies, I've been doing it a lot. I hate it, but I try to find things to distract myself, like videos and podcasts.

I ran my first half marathon yesterday. The Running of the Bays Half Marathon around beautiful Lake Minnetonka in the Twin Cities. I started out at what felt like a good comfortable pace, even with all of the rolling hills over the course. Then somewhere between miles 7 & 8 I stepped a little awkward and tweaked my ankle. I had to ease off the pace and even walk a little, ugh, can't I ever have a good race. My ankle is feeling much better today though. The good news is my pace was significantly better than my 10 miler in July so it will be a better POT, which was the goal. I finished in 2:04:09, a 9:29 pace.

If I remember correctly aren't they doing a third one, which is based on the 2014 or 2015 Boston Marathon? I would imagine that its coming out soon... I saw either the first or second one at the movie theater with a running friend of mine. They are interesting films but not great. I will still watch them because they are based on running.

I did not know a third was in the making. Looking forward to that when it comes out!

Pretty much. I'm either running around the parking lot or running on a treadmill.

ATTQOTD and race report:

My local store is Playmakers, just a few miles down the road. Great place; they offer a free running injury clinic, form classes, sponsor many local races and were incredibly helpful to me so many times!

Saturday I completed my first Ultra at the Run Woodstock Weekend in the appropriately named town of Hell, Michigan! It rained the entire night before the race and into the next day. The course begins on a privately owned farm and leads into State Park land. The course is like a figure eight that is 16 miles long; with 2 inner loops of 8 miles each. Pretty hilly and mostly on single track trails. The views were just beautiful! The challenge was the trails (read mud slicks) that where side to side mud, puddles and then more mud. So very tricky when it got hilly. It was a blast!

The race started in the dark so headlamps were a must. Over the course of the race it went from dark and raining to light and raining to sunny. The start/finish area was also a huge weekend long party with people camping and bands playing. Think the 1960's Woodstock Concert. Just a complete blast, a muddy one, but still a blast!

Given my training slips in August I still had a good race and am very proud to have finished my first ultra race; 50k. I found a solid pace and just cruised along taking in the setting, feeding off the super positive vibe of the runners around me and pushing longer than I thought I could. I finished with a smile and wiped out legs! I think I am hooked and already thinking about the next ultra I can do. I left plenty of room to improve!
