The Running Thread - 2016

Yup, Vancouver! :) I take it you're from the East?

Oh cool! My brother just moved to Vancouver last week. I am in London, ON...nice having another Canuck around!

Looks like we have a good start on our team uniform ideas for Dopey 2018. Red sparkle skirts for all!!

Yup, it's a start...I'm still trying to figure out my 2017 Dopey costumes, but it is safe to say that Sparkle Skirts will be a prominent feature! Darth Vader can rock a black Sparkle Skirt, right??

Well, I finished my first 10k. This was a bit too early in my training, but it's my small-town event, and I wanted some time to submit to avoid the last corral for GSC.

My only goal was to finish in the upright position. Check.

My secondary goal was to make it under the max pace for PHM. Check.

My secret goal was to finish under 15:00/mile. I did 14:51 pace. Check.

The last mile was tough. I guess that's just a need to build more stamina, which is part of the plan.

So, a PR of 1:33:14 (by Garmin). Of course I've never run six miles, so PR easy to achieve. It's not exactly fun to finish (literally) in last place, but that's better than no place I suppose.

Thanks to everyone for creating such a supportive place for folks like me, and especially to @DopeyBadger for the training plan.

Running 6 miles at any pace is an accomplishment!

Yes! Great job! You are just a little bit ahead of me in my training, so guess what?!? You are my inspiration! :) This is where I want to be in a couple of months from now! Great job again! :)

I just got back from my race and I am so excited I couldn't wait to report back. I not only broke my 10K PR, I smashed it! I can't remember my exact official time (I'll come back with that later) but it was between 4-5 minutes faster than this same event last year, where I had my previous best time. And almost 8 minutes faster than my 10K a little over a month ago! The conditions were definitely favorable - we had some rain sprinkles at the start and a short 1-2 minute steady shower around mile 4, but other than that, the overcast skies were very welcome. For the race last month it was beating down sun the whole time. It really does make such a huge difference. Anyway, I just had to share as soon as possible. I am so happy right now. :)

Congratulations! I am very proud of you. You have made tremendous progress in short time. I'm happy to help!

Way to go! Some days everything aligns for you and it sounds like today was one of those days for you. Those are massive time improvements! Congrats!

Thanks! The only thing that provided a little stress was arriving at the stadium. Traffic getting into the lots was so backed up, and I literally made it into the corrals with maybe 5 minutes to spare. No time for a bathroom break or anything. Perhaps the speed walk to the start line from the lot (it was probably half a mile) was what helped. It was a good warm-up!

Awesome! Race days like those are what keep us wanting more and more I think!

Congratulations on finishing your first 10k! And you met your goals too, which is super-awesome!

We have, or at least had, Running Rooms in Minnesota, so they aren't strictly Canadian, but that kilometer thing, who even doe that?

Ya I've noticed on the a Running Room website that there are a few in the US...mostly border states if I remember correctly. As for kilometres...I'm not touching that one. I love me some metric system though ;)

The light rail might be an option for heading to Minnehaha if you want to do that. Funny that you'll be heading to Rennaissance Festival, as I live near that now.

We were at the Festival last Saturday (9/3) - I should have waved. :P

I ended up running at the refuge, which was nice. The trail was flat and went through light woods and meadows along the MN River.

Cool, maybe I'll have to try a run over there one day. Are there a lot of trails and/or long trails? Hope you had fun at Ren Fest. My wife and I took the 3 month old to the MN State Fair. Maybe someday I'll make it to Ren Fest.
