The Running Thread - 2016

Joined up on Strava, adding some British runs to the mix.

Kinda hitting a wall at the moment as my training program (a couch to 10k) is asking me to do longer runs
Day 1 - R 20min, Wk 2min, R 20min
Day 2 - Run 25min
Day 3 - Run 40min

Day 1 freaked me out so ended up changing it to 10 min and then 2 min walks times 4. I have really benefitted from having a structure that I have to follow but I don't feel like I'm ready to go up as far as it is asking (whether I am freaked for no reason or I am running too fast).

Trying to fill in the gap between now and starting a Jeff Galloway half-marathon plan (date altered for Disney Paris Half) and I don't want to lose faith/progress/injure myself.

I tried to do the c210k after completing c25k, but I found it unmanageable. I wound up doing my own thing. I knew I could run for 30 minutes straight, so I just added 2 minutes until that was comfortable. Then I added 2 more minutes of running. I did that until I got to 6 miles.

April Training Report

Hooray, it's May! How did everyone's training go in April?

Total Running Mileage - 229.58 miles
Total Running Time - 33:48:47
Avg. Running Pace - 8:50 min/mile

Happy with my numbers. Missed a few runs (darn being sick) that dropped my total mileage from my monthly goal, but I'm ok with that. I'm just happy that it's finally race week for me. It's been since January since I've gotten to race and I have to admit I've been quite jealous of all of you and your races. :hyper:

Not nearly so much for me. Missed a week of training due to a nasty head & chest cold picked up at SWDS.

Total Running Mileage - 74.22 miles

My wife never went past a 5 minute run interval and she went from couch to half marathon. I agree - find what works for you and keep it fun. If it gets too hard, we want to stop altogether.

Agreed. It is supposed to be challenging, but if you don't want to do it any more, something needs to change.

Monthly total: 111.8 miles

My daughter and I ran the Colorado Half Marathon today! A very scenic race run through the Poudre Canyon along the Cache de Poudre river ending in old town Ft. Collins, CO. It was snowing lightly for most of the race which thrilled my daughter who has been going to grad school in FL and hasn't seen snow for a while. I was thankful for the snow because the forecast had been cold and rain.
I felt good most of the run and enjoyed it until mile 10 and then the wheels came off in a hurry. My hips, knees, and ankles started aching and I slowed waaaaay down. My finish time was 2:35:43. Not what I was hoping for but it was great doing this with my daughter and running in the beautiful Colorado scenery.

Out of curiosity, how do you track your training stats? Does your tracker/app calculate the stats for you? I use Garmin Connect and all I get out of the monthly summary is my mileage. I'd love to get total time and pace info and I'm way too lazy to calculate it out for myself across 16-20 training events. Thanks!

I get the miles and time off my watch.

Go to the Calendar screen on Garmin Connect (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/calendar), and at the bottom, it will show you both total miles and total time, then you can calculate the pace from those two numbers. You can also go to Reports > Progress Summary and choose last month, but that will show pace in mph.

I have been dreading this post for days as I had a rather disappointing 43.78 miles. My goal for the month was 75 as I try to ramp up the mileage but I underestimated how much doing P90X would take out of me when I started it up again this month. I was so sore from doing both it caused me to miss more runs than I wanted.

Now, I am running into a different problem. I have been in pain the last few runs. At first I thought it was my sneakers having run out of mileage but I am wearing my other pair that has about 250 miles left and it isn't helping. My shin hurts when I run and my hip hurts all the time. It's like a burning pain. So, I am wondering if it is this IT band issue I hear so much about.

Anyway, my goal for this month is to make it over 100 but I am concerned about this. Several weeks ago we talked about motivation and I said I have my own forced motivation with numbers for my goals. My yearly mileage goal is 1277 and given my shortages the last 2 months this brings my monthly average up to roughly 130 miles a month for the rest of the year to meet my goal.

I am going to switch from P90X to P90X3 though. I think the workouts being 1/2 as long will help a little. They are also more core focused, which is my weakest spot. Sorry to vent, I am just frustrated. I had such big goals for the year and it isn't going as planned, as usual.

April Training Report

Well, with the Dark Side Challenge, April included my last week of half marathon training, 10 days of taper, the two Dark Side Challenge races, and then two weeks of recovery, so definitely not the normal training month...

Total Running Mileage - 127.40 miles
Total Running Time - 18:59:25
Avg. Running Pace - 8:57 min/mile

Thanks! Found the info. I've actually never looked at the Garmin Connect site online before. I've only used the iOS app and it doesn't have the same functionality (that I can find, at least).

Yes, the iOS app is very nice and has quite a bit of info, but the website definitely has more options. Glad you found it!

I've had IT issues and that doesn't sound like the same thing but that doesn't mean it's not. I just remember it being more around knee. Pain was when I sat and went down steps. But if it's something that continues you may what to have it checked out. Pain is different then soreness so you might want to be careful and not try to run through it. And don't get discouraged - things happen and sometimes you just have to reset your goals.
