The Running Thread - 2016

Hey guys! So I'm looking for some advice. Sunday looks like it's going to rain for my race and I can't recall ever running more than 4 miles in the rain (this is because we have stone sidewalks in many places and on parts where I can't run in the road the sidewalks become just as dangerous in the rain) so I'm looking for some advice. The weather is supposed to be between 50-55F and I would normally wear capris and a tank top (both running material) with a wide headband to keep my hair out of my eyes. Now I'm wondering if I should start with throw-away clothes or my running jacket and if there is anything I need to do to prepare for what looks to be 10mi of light to moderate rain. Does anyone have experience on long runs or races in the rain?

I thought this is a good read:

I am in the same situation...it's suppose to rain pretty good on Sunday for the Pittsburgh Marathon/Half Marathon. I saw an article that said to take a garbage bag to the start. Have a small hole cut in it (large enough to get your head through it). The same for your arms. You can wear that to the starting line to help keep you dry for the time being. Also, Aquafor works well in lieu of Vaseline. Aquafor rubs into the skin a little better and is just as protective. For your shoes, you could try putting duct tape over the front/toe portion of your shoes. Basically covering up the mesh part of your shoes. The article stated that the duct tape will probably fall off, but if you get 5-8 miles of protection, it's better than nothing.

So someone suggested creating a Strava Club on another thread so that we can all share our training. If you'd like to join, just create an account and click this link for the club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/DISboards_Community . It's open to anyone who'd like to join regardless if you're currently training for any RunDisney event or not. Hope to see you on there!

I know nothing about Strava. I have so many apps already, but I am intrigued. How is it different from other fitness apps, like Fitbit, Mapmyrun or Runkeeper?

Okay, I can't post this anywhere else as it hasn't been announced yet but my direct boss just got a promotion and she is moving me into her position! It won't be for a couple of months but it is a $5 an hour raise! Is it totally lame that I'm just thinking that now I have more racing/Disney money?? Oh, and Sparkle Skirt money, lol!

Congrats! It's not lame at all! It's pretty normal around here, actually. You are among friends.

I guess I'm getting the reason why you'd want to wear glasses, but then maybe bring something in a ziploc bag to wipe them with? I couldn't see after a while and there was nothing I could do about it. When I ran in the cold and rain, I wore a warm jacket with a rain jacket over it. Other times, I'd just wear the rain jacket.

Thanks for doing this! I have joined, and once I get off of my self-imposed Disabled List, I will start adding miles!

You and me both, friend! I am literally starting from zero. I did 1.5 miles the other day, and it felt a lot further.

Thank you! I am more excited than I should be about this. I've just switched over to Strava from RunKeeper and have a lot less friends there. And if I'm behing honest, I need that kind of encouragement. LOL. If anyone would like to add me, please feel free. A little run app stalking never hurt anybody!

@keahgirl8 Strava, to me, is more accurate than Runkeeper. Runkeeper for me lately, has gotten really bloated (trying to do too many things) and just doesn't work. Strava is for running/walking and biking. I really like it alot, I just don't have enough friends on it yet. haha.

I joined the Strava group, but I have no idea how it works. :) Will it sync with a Garmin connect account?

I'm new to it as of this morning, but it appears to be a place where people using different fitness apps can all see each other. I have Garmin Connect, but that limits me to only being with other Garmin people. But my Garmin data can be uploaded into Strava and enables me to participate in a group with other people who have Strava. In addition, there are a few features that interest me. I'd be interested also to hear from someone who has the premium membership (mine is free) for $59/year or $6/month to see if they find the advertised "advanced analysis" to be worth it.

Yep, it will sync everything in the last 30 days once you do your next run and have your Garmin account linked. You can also upload all of your old data using this website if you'd like: https://tapiriik.com. It worked for me. It took a while and a few of the runs didn't make it in fully, but overall i got most of the data.

I'm in a similar situation except it's going to be in the 30's and a rain/snow mix for my half on Sunday. Right now, my plan is tights, long sleeve top with a jacket, and a hat with a bill to keep the precipitation off of my glasses. I'm going to wear warm layers in the start area as long as I can before turning in my bag to gear check. And I'm going to use liberal amounts of Vaseline on anything that might chafe. Wet clothing chafes more than dry.

Hmm, I've been using Strava for a long time, first started using it for cycling in 2012. I've been premium for a few years now, and honestly, I don't remember the differences. Are there any you are particularly interested in? The fact that I don't know could mean a) I'm just used to having them, b)they aren't that big of a deal or c) I'm not tech advanced enough to make full use of them:)

My favorite features are the segments, but I know those are free. I have some that occur naturally along my frequent routes, and some I've created and watch to look for progress.

For the premium features, I like hte Heart Rate Zone analysis and suffer score. LOL. There's also a Pace Zone Analysis, which I have yet to really look into. I know it's probably not all that accurate (I use an Apple Watch), but I it's just something I like. I believe for premium users there area also training plans you have access to.

Ah, suffer score is a premium feature. That, I think, is why I upgraded. My husband had it and I was jealous:) I use suffer score a lot, and that will be interesting for me to watch now that my training goals have been turned upside down by my new coach. I did use a 10k training plan a while back and liked it. It was basic, but so was my goal at the time -- just finish.

There are some premium features that are applicable only to cyclists. One, form and freshness tracks metrics to graph your fatigue, form and freshness. It sounds interesting to me, and says they're working on adapting it to runners, but they haven't yet.

Originally I switched to Strava last year because RunKeeper would not sync with my Garmin automatically. I was just too tired of manually syncing runs to it. Of course then they finally added that, but I'd already switched over to Strava by then and I like the UI a lot better, plus I really like the tracking feature where it keeps track of your times/paces on different routes that you repeatedly run. I like being able to see how I am improving (or not) on the routes that I run regularly.

Nothing wrong with that. I have all my money and bills planned around my Disney trips.

55 is normally an ideal temperature for me because once it gets over 60 I start to feel hot on runs. My concern is the fact that the rain may make it feel colder. I can definitely do the poncho and warm clothes though. For the Vaseline I'm a little concerned about it staining my socks but I would rather sacrifice a pair then get blisters. I generally don't wear hats while running but I believe there is probably at least one around the house if I look hard enough.

I am worried about the wind but the forecast doesn't seem to be calling for major wind. I will definitely give the jacket a go since I can always take it off and wrap it around my waist if I get too hot.

I haven't found that Vaseline does anything to my socks at all. Now, it feels weird when you put all the Vaseline on your feet and first put your socks on but I never saw any damage. It is well worth preventing the blisters.

Good luck to everyone who has a race this weekend.

Anyone have any experience with posterior tibial tendonitis? I was fit via plaster caster for orthotic inserts & my wallet is several hundred lighter, but from what I'm reading this could be a pretty cruddy injury.

Seriously any advice would be appreciated. At this point even walking is a struggle. My calf and ankle are tender/aching & the pad under my toes is so swollen I can't even bend them. Le sigh...

Congrats. I just landed a new job myself, and am unable to tell anyone. I am still waiting for the revised offer from my new company after the agreed to my counter. It will be 33% pay increase, and we will actually be able to afford to send our kid to daycare now, with less financial stress. I'm excited about my new opportunity.

Sorry about the injury. Can't offer any advice but I hope it doesn't keep you out for too long.

I don't see a need for the extra features. All the analysis and information I need is in Training Peaks, my primary workout scheduling and tracking site.

I have Strava Premium but only because I signed up for the free trial and forgot to cancel it before it was over. :o I am not fast enough to really find the analysis stuff useful, plus I don't really know what I'm looking at. :o

At least I can see my trophy case now, though, I guess. :D
