The Running Thread—2023

August 2023 totals
Distance: 162.0km (100mi)
Average pace: 6m41s/km (10:45/mi)
YTD: 1343km on 2023km

Nice ramp-up on the training, challenging without being exhausting. DH ran his first official long distance race, the Demi-Marathon des Vignobles. We enjoyed the scenic route together, he learnt a few things regarding nutrition and hydration, we smiled for great pictures and he wears his purple race shirt proudly this week. Congratulations my love 😍

Congrats to your DH.....and welcome him to the dark side!

Okay, this is a very dumb question, but as someone who has never been injured, what kind of medical professional do you call? Can you just make an appointment with a PT? Or do you need to get a prescription from a doctor? What kind of doctor is that?
I just had to do this recently. In my case, I went into my regular doctor, who referred me to a nearby specialist, who turned out to also be a distance runner. The specialist (I keep saying that because I don't recall her actual title, beyond "Doctor") took some x-rays to verify no arthritis or bone damage in the joints and then referred me to PT.
Why? Because, she said, a round of PT was the key to unlocking approval for an MRI.
That said, the PT did its job in relieving the lower back issue that was manifesting as pain in my leg. Besides the exercises done at PT itself, I learned which stretching and strengthening I needed to be doing for the long-term.
The PT does work. As Davy Jones would say, "I'm a believer".

And now that I know about the local PT place, could I have gotten a direct appointment with them? Probably, but didn't think to ask. So if you find a local PT or sports medicine place, it won't hurt to call and ask.
And YMMV when it comes to what your insurance allows.

Hmmm.
You guys have probably seen my prior posts where I was whining commenting on my back problems causing leg pain, and my stupid Morton's neuropathy. The MN has been very annoying, but so far hasn't restricted runs (yet). The leg pain sure did.

But as previously mentioned, the PT has done wonders and I'm back at it, slowly building back up my legs and lungs.
I was really pleased that yesterday I managed 4.91 miles (yes, that aggravated my OCD, but I was in front of my house when I hit that mark...) at a 10:28 pace on my hills course. So I'm getting there.
I felt good afterwards, and I'm not sure how much of that was the cooler temps due to the hurricane (but still ridiculous humidity) or that I tried a Glukos at the halfway point. The purpose of that was (1) to see if it made a difference, and (2) to see what it was like trying to consume it on the run. It seemed to go well on both counts.

For the month: 16 runs, about 68.5 miles

Um, Micky Dolenz. (And now everyone under the age of ?? will need to go google this. Hint: The Monkees......and not whatever version they used in Shrek)
Oh crud. You are so correct on that. I was morphing I'm a Believer with Daydream Believer.
For which, I've got nothin' in terms of an excuse, given that I'm a huge Monkees fan.
Other fun facts:
I had a Matchbox Monkeemobile when I was very young. I still want the actual car...
I'm happy that I got to see them (minus Nesmith) in their 1980s reunion tour.

Whew! That sounds like a saga. You just reminded me that someone said I might be able to see a PT directly, I hadn't tried that route.

August 2023:
Running Miles: 77.08
Average pace: 12'00"
YTD miles: 400.84

I've slowed down some this month as the heat has been unrelenting and absolutely brutal down here in TX, average T+D has been north of 160. I've become so heat acclimated that when I went out after the "cold front" at 76F and 53% humidity the other morning I was actually chilly o_O

Side note, Rabbit has a labor day sale, -40% extra on their sale items.

Pooh or Eeyore have anything on sale?

August Recap
Miles: 99.84 <---- Should I jog around my block to get to 100? 😆

YTD:
Miles: 757.48

I rolled my ankle pretty good last week which I normally would try to run through. But since it was a week out from "official" Dopey training I decided to be smart. Like others have mentioned I am lucky to have a free walk-in ortho clinic. You see an AT and if necessary are referred to a PA or Dr. within the clinic. A few of the Drs are on the GB Packer staff as well...pretty cool! I ended up getting X-rays to confirm no break, a walking boot, and disappointment I have to be extra cautious and scale back a bit. I can't sit still though so I've been walking on my treadmill and sprinkling in some short run spurts to see how my ankle responds. Hoping to give it a full go next week. X-ray also showed I have an extra bone (navicular I think its called??) in my foot which has been the cause of a lot of discomfort I get when I'm deep into a training cycle. Apparently there's nothing I can do about it though!

Next up: Dopey training! Four months out! Ahh!

August Totals:
87.97 KM
Time: 10:24

A lot better this month compared to July as I'm building up the mileage again following an early June achilles injury.

September goal is to be back up to 100Miles/ 160KM leading up to W&D in November.

So glad I had decided not to do Dopey in 2024. I didn't have the pressure to start heavy mileage too soon.
