The Rebels Welcome April and Spring!

Good morning,
Very very busy at work on Sunday and Monday, people coming back from their easter vacation in the States.
Yesterday, I did hill work, again, but I think I am getting a little bit stronger one hill at a time.
James- Congratulations for your first half-marathon. I have done only one and it was Donald last january and every day I look at the medal and I cannot believe I did it. And it is still my personal best :lmao:.

Have a nice day
Diane

Good afternoon, team! Hope everyone is doing well. Very busy day at work today and my allergies are kicking my butt. The pollen is obscene here, it's turned everything yellow.

Anything exciting going on for anyone?

Good afternoon,
I am about to leave for work. Cool and cloudy today so I did my run in long sleeveshirt. Too bad, I was getting used to wearing shortsleeve.
The two ducks who are here each spring (we call them Bobino et Bobinette) arrive yesterday. They should stay till the baby ducks are old enough to fly. And they drive my dog crazy and they think they are funny.
Time to earn my money. Have a nice evening.
Diane

Andrea Sorry about your allergies, that must make it hard to train when you feel miserable!

Swimming is going about the same, I'm slow, but I get there eventually! I just found out for spring break next week they are converting the pool from 25 yard lanes to 50 yard lanes. After my initial thought of "well, I just won't come next week" I realized this could really help my confidence with swimming. Besides, the pool will be in 50 yard lane format for the summer too, so I better get used to it! It doesn't seem to matter how much I swim, that mean little voice in my head always tells me I'm a bad swimmer.

Running is going well. I did my first full 30 minute run on Sunday and another on Tuesday and today. Now to just keep building slowly and steadily!

I'm off from work next week and I'm hoping to get some bike rides in and some brick workouts.

Let's hear it Rebels! What are you guys doing?

Andrea: We are having the same problem here. The tree pollen is ridiculous right now with it getting so hot so fast. I need to try to rinse my car off tonight just so that I don't have to deal with my car making me sneeze, lol. Have you ever tried the neti pot? I feel like it makes this time of year a little more tolerable if I use it a couple times a day, especially before and after my runs.

Oh my...I am going to have to admit...I didn't realize we had a new thread! I thought everyone was being quiet and must be busy like me! :rotfl: Seriously, I need to get things back to normal after my crazy vacation! :upsidedow

I am having a hard time getting back into the groove of things since vacation. Ran 5K on Sunday - it was a hard run as we had just drove 25 hours home from WDW. Should have run on Tuesday but we had rain so I just skipped it. Ran 5K on Wednesday and need to be honest...I actually had to walk a short bit because it was still hard. I think part of it is that I am just really tired from the unexpected vacation and that my job is really stressful this week. I am planning on running tomorrow night but am hoping that it goes better then my last 2 runs.

I feel so much better now that I have found everyone again! :rotfl2:

You'll soon get to wear your short sleeve's again, I suspect! So cute about the baby ducks, how long have they been visiting? I bet your dog looks forward to them each year, too, although he'd never admit it!

Tiffany, sounds like you are doing great, with the swimming and running and biking! You need to tell that little voice to shut up!

Love the neti pot. Feels SO weird using it, but so worth it!

Glad you found us, Jen. I linked the new thread on the old one, so I was hoping everyone would find us. If not, I would have gone searching!

I think doing anything after that long a drive would be hard! That's crazy long.

I hope your run tonight is great.

We had a big storm last night that washed all the pollen away, but here's where some of it showed up - this is the view outside of my office.

Good Sunday morning,
Well the weather is a bit colder than last week-end. I had to go back in my "winter box" to dig out a pair of glove and my jacket because it was only 30F and very windy. Last week-end, it was 80F.
Today is a day off and since I was not working, I slept till 8:30am :cool1:.
It will be a rainy day, so I guess I will be cleaning the house .
For the next 2 days, I have to follow a class on first aid and RCR so it should be fun :upsidedow.

Have a nice Sunday

Andrea - The pollen is pretty bad here right now too. My eyes are so itchy. I usually try to avoid being outside at this time of the year but with my new running lifestyle...that does not work. I am hoping that the trees just finish getting their leaves and the pollen goes away soon!

Diane - Sounds like a cold weekend! Hope you enjoyed your day off and that you were able to get what you wanted done.

AFM - It was a good (not great but definitely better than it had been) running weekend. I think we are getting back into the groove of normal things after our crazy week in WDW.

On Friday night, DH and I ran 3 miles in 31 minutes. It was so nice outside and that really helped. On Saturday, we ran 5 miles in 55 minutes. I was really pleased with this time because we ran around a lake that is near our house and the path is pretty hilly. There was one HUGE hill that we actually walked up but we ran the rest of the 5 miles. Sunday was our day of rest according to the plan that we are using to train for the 1/2 in June. I did do a bunch of raking. Then, on Sunday nights the family watches TV together for a bit and I decided that I was going to use the TM and have a nice walk while we watched TV. So I was able to get 1.6 miles in.

Plans for today include a 3 mile run. I would also like to do some cross training but I have a really busy schedule today so we will have to see if anything besides the run really happens.

Have a great Monday everyone!
Jen

I swam long course this morning and it was so funny, I worried about it all weekend and then got nervous when I got there and saw the pool set up differently and then I got in the water and it was totally fine. I hope it's like that in the open water in Arizona.

I had an expensive weekend! I bought a wetsuit online over the weekend. I hope it fits okay, I got a medium. I'm at the top end of the weight range for the small and the bottom of the weight range for the meduim. I rented a wetsuit for my first triathlon last June and even though I swam in it 5 times before the race, every time I felt tons of fatigue in my arms and shoulders and felt out of breath. So I'm thinking it may have been too small. I know they are supposed to be tight, but it was so frustrating not being able to swim when I was trained to do it. I spent most of the swim out on my side because of the issues I was having. I hope it was because of a too-small wetsuit.

My mom and I also decided to invest in a pair of bike rollers. The weather here in California continues to be cold and wet and sometimes you just want to ride and get it over with, not go somewhere alone and deal with traffic.

Jen Good to see you here in the new thread!:rotfl2:

Hi All,

I have been a giant slacker in posting, and I will probably not be back until after my vacation. But I wanted to update with a couple races I have signed up for.

May 8th - Race for the Cure 5K (Salt Lake City, Utah)
June 12th - Bear Lake 10K (Garden City, Utah)

Thanks!

Hello, fellow Rebels! Hope everyone's week has gone well. I have been busy at work, but did manage to complete the race portion of my trip report, if anyone is interested.

It's going to be a beautiful weekend here and I am still deciding whether to do the half marathon I had planned for Saturday morning. I am definitely not as trained as I should be, but I hate to just skip it.

The pollen seems to have slacked off quite a bit, so I'm so happy about that!

Jen and cwnhokie, are you both excited about your 5ks this weekend?

Good evening,
Not too busy at work. Every half hour, someone at work is checking the hockey score. Like you can guess, we are fans of the Montréal Canadian. It is still 1-1 against Washington.
Go Habs Go :cool1:
And I have a week-end off, and it is supposed to rain , but it's been a nice sunny week.

Diane and GO HABS GO :yay:

Just want to say,

It is snowing thi morning .
And the Canadiens :3
Capitals :2

Evening Everyone!

Sorry I have been MIA. I had a very busy week at school and then I ended up getting sick...I am still not feeling good at all. I have problems with allergies but it turned into some sort of cold with a bad runny nose and a horrible cough...the type that hurts the chest when you cough.

I have been trying really hard to still get all of my training runs completed. Last week I was able to do the following:
• Running: 13 miles
• Walking: 2 miles
• Biking: 6 miles
• Cross Training: 60 minutes total

The running does include the 5K I ran on Saturday. It was a really hard race because I did not feel very good and I struggled with breathing without coughing. I was happy with my time though because we ran it in 31:10 and that was a PR for me (and DH). It made me wonder how fast I could have gone if I did not have the horrible cold.

I feel bad though because DH and I were suppose to run 6 miles on Saturday according to our 1/2 marathon training plan. We only did the 5K. I told him we would run today and I was coughing so badly that we skipped it. At this point, we are just going to skip that long run and do this week's scheduled runs. I am hoping that the cough gets better.

I am also hoping to bike to work some and want to do a bit more cross training. I know I am going to have to listen to my body this week though and try not to make myself even more run down. I am a bit worried about taking it too easy though because our next race is a 1/2 marathon on June 6th...I must have been crazy signing up for that!

Hope everyone else has had a great weekend!
Jen

Hello all,
I haven't posted in a while. I lost track of the new thread. Jen, I also ran my 5K this weekend with a cold. It was a PR for me too, but not as good as yours. My time was 34:43. I forgot my watch and had no idea until I got close to the finish what my time was. I was very happy with my time. My son did a Duathlon too and came in 11th out of about 30 kids. So proud of him too.

Great job on your 5K! I think it is great that your DS is getting into the racing too!

Our official times were posted today...my time was 31:13. My watch time was pretty close...I think the difference was that I pushed my start button when I actually crossed the start line (this race did not have shoe timers/chips). I came in 28th out of 111 women.

I am now struggling about what to do about my 1/2 marathon training. My cough is absolutely horrible - the type that hurts your chest and burns. We are on week 5 of our 10 week training plan and I don't know if I am doing more harm then good by going out and running. Tonight we are suppose to run 3 miles. I am going to do it but I am going to keep a really slow pace and if I start coughing, I am going to walk the rest. Wednesday we are suppose to run 5 miles. I am hoping I will begin to feel better soon and not worse.

Anyone with experience....what do you do when you are getting close to a bit race, should be training but are not feeling well? At what point do you decide not to do your training runs? How do you make up for it? Can you make up for it? I am feeling a bit worried!

Thanks for any advice!
Jen

Hi Jen – I had to take a week and a half off from half marathon training because of the unexpected birth of my son (10 weeks early). I actually stayed with the schedule and did not try to make up the miles. However, I had to take it easy because I was going above the weekly 10% progression rule. I found that my body recovered nicely. Please be careful though, it is pretty easy to over train while you are catching up. Big thing is, go out and have fun with your training, no worries! :)

As for me, I am starting the Hal Higdon Novice 3 marathon training for the marathon in October. The first week is this week. However, I started have lung problems a couple of days after my half marathon two weeks ago and I am starting to get better. So, I ended up taking a couple of weeks off from training, but I did manage to get 7 miles taking my oldest son to the park on the weekends.

Anyway, went out and did my scheduled 3 miles this morning. My breathing was still not right, but better. I did 3 miles in 41:08, which was really good for me.

Hope every one is have a good week so far…

Happy Thursday Rebels!
Hope everyone is having a great week... I'm ready for the weekend! Just wanted to do a quick update while I've got a chance to get some posting done:surfweb:
Completed my first 10K in 1:08.. not bad timing for me.. .can't believe I made it under 1:15 which was my expected time.
DH came in randomly yesterday and said MAYBE I could do a solo trip in October for the Wine and Dine Half. I've been bugging him for a Adults only weekend for the race, but hadn't mentioned it in forever, so this was a shock! I'd only get one night down there (race night) but it's a race and should be a fun trip anyway... now to see if we can pull it off. I've already checked DVC avilability and nothing avilable at the host resort (beach club or boardwalk) so that puts a kink in the plans. I have to first off figure out if I can do the whole trip (including race) for less then $500 and next HOPE I get some bonuses soon to validate my wish (and pay for race/flight) and see what I can do about race transportation. So many details :)

Oops... gotta run, baby is awake. Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi Rebels,

Haven't posted for a while, I've got two more weeks of hard training for the Edinburgh marathon (23rd May) until I start tapering.

Training is going really well but I'm very sleepy all of the time now.

I'm going to spectate at the London Marathon this weekend. I always find it a hugely uplifting experience. I always stand where I can see people coming past at 13miles and then also at 22 miles. I love to see all those thousands of people with all their stories, their reasons for running.

I don't know if any Disers or their friends are running but best of luck to all runners.

Liam
