In the book, Lampwick is the one who convinces Pinocchio to Pleasure Island. They both end up as donkeys, I don't remember where both of them go, but I know that Pinocchio is thrown into the ocean as getting a limp (I think he was in the circus...) and is eaten up by fishes, and somehow becomes a puppet again. Lampwick, I think, goes to a farm(?) and dies from exhaustion...

Thank goodness for Disneyfication.

Oh, the boy in the book is called Candlewick. Turns out I remembered it quite well:

"Within a short while Pinocchio has become a donkey. He is sold to a circus and is trained to do all kinds of tricks. Then one night in the circus he falls and sprains his leg. The circus owner sells the donkey to a man who wants to skin him and make a drum. The man throws the donkey into the sea to drown him — and brings up a living wooden boy. Pinocchio explains that the fish ate all the donkey skin off of him and he is now a marionette again."

"Pinocchio gets a job doing work for a farmer, whose donkey is dying. Pinocchio recognizes the donkey as Candlewick. Pinocchio mourns over Candlewick's dead body and the farmer is perplexed as to why. Pinocchio says that Candlewick was his friend and they went to school together, causing Farmer John to be even more confused."

I cried in fear when the boys got sold to the salt mines, maybe it was how scared they were themselves.

The original book was going to have Pinocchio be killed by the fox and the cat as they tried to get money off him. They hanged him, and left him to suffocate over night. The book writer was told that to get Adventures of Pinocchio printed, he would have to keep Pinocchio alive and have him become a real boy, so Pinocchio is saved by the Blue Fairy, who sends a falcon and poodle (yeah...) to save him.

Pinocchio looks creepy as a real boy... But at least he won't stand out among his peers any longer.
