The Poly Pool Gate Debate

I agree with those who would close the gate behind them but if the people stated their bands were not working I would tell them I would share that with the CM so he could help them. Not rude but if they are pool crashers that would effectively stop them from getting in. If you do not pay to stay at a Deluxe you don't play at the Deluxe.

A few years ago, I was sitting and chatting with my dh's aunt....she loves WDW and used to go quite often when her kids were younger. They would put their swim stuff in a carryall bag, and get a locker for it at MK. Then, midday, they would take the bags out, and head to the Polynesian, for a nice mid-afternoon swim! I told her that was no longer allowed.....well, she didn't seem to much care. She said they had always done it and were planning on continuing the practice when they went down with the grandkids. She hadn't been in about 15 years at that point. I told her she could very well be asked to leave the pool area, she told me they would take that chance.
They didn't stay on-site, but in a less expensive hotel a few miles away. I never asked her how it worked out....just avoided the subject. I get too annoyed with people that feel it's okay to do this.

I think some folks just don't get it. We have friends who were staying at POP and mentioned how they'd pool hop. They didn't realize the restrictions were in place at SAB until they got there and realized they needed a wrist band to get in. I didn't even get into it with them because there was no point. I just don't understand schlepping my stuff from one place to another just to swim at another resort pool. Use the pool where you are, or go to a water park.

And then there are the people who DO KNOW it's wrong and think that rules don't apply to them or they don't care about rules, they teach their kids to lie about breaking the rules and that is OK to do so. Ethical and moral behavior, following posted rules in addition to laws, doesn't matter, they are special, or so they think, I have other labels from them that I will refrain from sharing

Sorry, Pool-hoppers and gate-crashers. When I'm at the Poly in a few weeks:

1. I won't be holding the pool gate open for you no matter how much stuff you're holding. Put something down and scan your MB. I'll hold something for you so you can if you ask.

2. If you try to rush the gate behind me I'm going to ask you to back up and scan your own MB.

3. If you tell me you "forgot" your MB, I'll say that's a problem b/c how will you get back into your room? Nice try!

4. If your MB isn't working you should have someone at the front desk fix it right away -- or I can call a lifeguard over to help you? No?

5. If you make it in w/o scanning your own MB I'll say something to the nearest lifeguard and point you out so they can scan your MB. You're welcome!

If you're a legit Poly guest you have nothing to fear as you won't be in any of these situations and you'll understand why I won't hold the gate for you. I don't expect or want you to hold the gate for me. I accept any small inconvenience this may cause me or you so that we can enjoy the beautiful resort pool we paid for with our reservation.

That's awfully friendly of you. I find it hard to believe anyone would be so concerned with whether another guest is supposed to be at the pool that they would report someone to a lifeguard. Oh well, to each his own.

I can’t speak for others but I can say for myself that I try and follow the rules of whoever owns the property, weather that is Disney or my neighbor. While I have made my fair share of mistakes in life I try and respect the rules even if I don’t agree with them. If my neighbor has a sign on his lawn that says “Stay off the grass” then I stay off the grass. If a hotel says the pool is for guests of the hotel only then I don’t even second guess going in. For me it is not a class or wealth thing. If I was down walking near some cheap motel and I was hot and wanted to cool off I am not going to walk into their pool area and jump in, even if no one is in it. I guess I don’t even see the argument here. For those that think that people are acting all elitist because they want to have people follow the rules, that just sounds like an excuse to say it is okay to break them. Let’s hope that they don’t teach their kids that they only have to obey the rules that they agree with.

Really? Try going to your resort's pool and find it too crowded to find a seat/table. Yeah, I would be concerned that I'm being shut out by pool crashers.

I can’t speak for others but I can say for myself that I try and follow the rules of whoever owns the property, weather that is Disney or my neighbor. While I have made my fair share of mistakes in life I try and respect the rules even if I don’t agree with them. If my neighbor has a sign on his lawn that says “Stay off the grass” then I stay off the grass. If a hotel says the pool is for guests of the hotel only then I don’t even second guess going in. For me it is not a class or wealth thing. If I was down walking near some cheap motel and I was hot and wanted to cool off I am not going to walk into their pool area and jump in, even if no one is in it. I guess I don’t even see the argument here. For those that think that people are acting all elitist because they want to have people follow the rules, that just sounds like an excuse to say it is okay to break them. Let’s hope that they don’t teach their kids that they only have to obey the rules that they agree with.

If it was allowed, I can totally see trying other pools. While I was picking our resort I spotted about 3 fun pools (other than SAB) which we'd enjoy. Our pool will be nice and we'll enjoy it, but we'll have a second "off" day and if it wasn't against the rules we'd probably hop over to Art of Animation so the 5 year old could swim in the pool there. Alas, AoA does not have the bed configuration we need, so we'll be staying elsewhere.

I think the new gate / fence will deter ~75% of would-be pool hoppers. IMHO, this is enough of a victory in and of itself that I wouldn't feel the need to slam the gate closed in someone's face, even if they were a potential "crasher". The recent reports that I have been reading indicate that traffic in the pool area is very light, so I suspect that the new system is working as designed. I want to relax on my vacation. I really don't want to go out of my way to concern myself with other people's actions that ultimately have very little effect on me personally, nor do I feel the need to deputize myself as Disney security. It's just not worth the aggravation nor the sudden spike in blood pressure. I suspect that the majority of hoppers that do squeeze through will eventually be caught by the pool staff. This is good enough for me.

Very well put!!! I agree 100%. Rules are rules and we should all be setting a good example and follow them!!!

...The mom sat right next to me and starts talking with the kids. She tells them that they are headed back to their car and they are going back to their hotel. She then tells the kids to hand over the magic bands so she can put them away so they don't get lost and then says "We need these so they think we are staying here."

And these children, who will have been raised to think lying/cheating/sneaking and "beating the system" are normal, will grow into adults. Hooray for society

When there is a new pool rule 'close the gate behind you' its time to look for someplace else to stay IMO. Hopefully Poly management comes up with a better solution before adding that rule to the sign.
