Hi all!!
Let’s start on the next day!
So we had a tiny breakfast in the room again, as we were planning on having a huge lunch eating our way around the F&W festival at Epcot . . . well we only got to about 10.30am and we needed a little something – something! So we shared a brownie at Sunshine Season.
Ohh this was really nice – a proper brownie, rather that the mislabeled cake that you get in a lot of places. It was REALLY rich and very dense, and very chocolately. I gave it 8/10 and Tony 9/10.
You’d think that would be enough. .. but no!! Then we passed the Fountaiview Café and got a nice mint choc chip (which we must all agree is the best ice-cream flavor in the world) in a waffle cone. This was good – proper creamy ice cream and a nice thick waffle cone. I gave it 7/10 (I didn’t get much of it because tony is an ice-cream addict!!) and he gave it 9/10.
At around midday we headed to our first ever Food and Wine Festival . . .and there we stayed for two hours. TWO HOURS of solid eating!!! The shame!!! (I should point out that everything you see we did actually share!!).
First up we headed to the New Zealand booth for something I had been dying to try – the lamb slider with tomato chutney.
This was really nice. The lamb and tomato tasted really good together, and the roll was lovely and soft. Tony doesn’t usually like lamb so I thought I would get the whole thing, but he tried it and loved it – very unfair!! We both gave this 8/10.
Next up was the CHARCUTERIE & CHEESE stand, where we ordered the Cheese Fondue with Croutons and Roasted Potatoes.
Hmm, this was a bit pointless really – I wish we had saved ourselves and got the cheese soup at the Canada stand instead, as we were a bit cheesed out by the time we got there and missed it out. The cheese fondue in itself was nice – very creamy and thick. The croutons were . . . well . . . bits of dried bread! Not really much to get excited about. The “normal”-looking roast potatoes were nice, but the other ones which look dark were purple on the inside – PURPLE. Maybe its me but I’ve never seen a purple potato before and I was the tiniest bit freaked out!! They didn’t taste very good at all. Tony gives this dish 6/10 and I give it 5.
We then trotted off to France where we ordered the braised short ribs in cabernet with mashed potato. I only ordered this because it involved the word “ribs”!! Imagine my disappointment when all the meat was taken off the bone already and was sort of stored on the underside of the mash!! I like a proper rib!! That aside the meat was actually very nice, and the sauce was lovely – thick and full of flavor. I’m not convinced the mash was “proper” rather than out of a packet though – it had a slight powdery taste. This gets 7/10.
Next up was Australia where I had a Grilled Lamb Chop with Roasted Potato Salad and Red Wine Reduction. The lamb was nicely cooked and flavored, though had a bit too much fat on it for my liking. I did not like the potato salad with it – would have preferred a hot potato side instead. This gets 6/10.
Tony didn’t try this as he had his eye on something else from Australia . . . the Lamington (Chocolate-Covered Butter Cake) Yes, we were now mixing sweet and savory! He gave this 7/10 – it was a bit dry (but he doesn’t really like coconut so not sure why he ordered it to be honest!!!).
We then headed off to the United States stand, where we shared the Bison Chili with Wild Mushrooms, Cabernet, and Pepper Jack Cheese; I really liked this – (it was pretty hot so definitely order a drink with it!!), loads of tender, meat, lots of flavor, and they weren’t mean with the cheese either! 8/10 from me, 7 from Tony.
We were stuffed by then, and swore not to eat another morsel until dinner . . . sometimes we lie to ourselves quite badly!! We happened upon Singapore at this point, where we had Coconut-Braised Beef Rendang with Jasmine Rice. Really liked this – as you know I’m a coconut fan and this was not a disappointment! I think this was my favorite thing of the whole afternoon. The coconut flavor really came through strong, and there was loads of meat and rice. The rice was cooked just right – not too stodgy.
By then I reeeeeally needed something sweet. So we headed somewhere I have been dying to try since it opened a couple of months ago - Karamelle-Kuche" (Caramel Kitchen) - the new shop in Germany. For those who don’t know I am addicted to caramel – it is without a doubt the best flavor in the whole wide world!!!
Do you have Werthers Original sweets in the US? The shop is owned by Werthers and most of the products are made of it, and when we walked in . . . ohh the sweet smell of Werthers – I was in heaven!!!! If you don’t have it it’s the richest, creamiest, sweetest, most comforting smell!! This is the display.
Be warned, the line in here is really long – we went here twice in total during our trip, and the line was right across the shop both times. Worth it though!! After a lot of deliberating I went for the caramel roll with marshmallow cream. Ohh this was gooooood!!!! Chewy, soft caramel with gooey marshmallow to soften it up and throw in even more sweetness. A definite 9/10! It loses one point for being so small!!!
Just one more stop was needed! Earlier whilst walking past the funnel cake stand in the USA part Tony had noticed “deep fried ice-cream” – the horror!!!!! But he was determined to try it. So here we have it – deep fried ice-cream covered in chocolate sauce.
And in my opinion it was as gross as it looks and sounds!! Extremely tasteless. Even Tony only gave it 5/10 and said it was pointless!! Trust me, this is a waste of calories!!! Save them for caramel-land!!!
All in all though an excellent days eating, and we still had dinner at Ohana to come!!!
