Just a quick post from me--just got back from the Dr. not too long ago,a nd the good news is that I don't have the Flu. Bad news is I have strep with a nice side of acute tonsilitis. Ugh! Today is DS's bday and we get to celebrate with mommy laid up in bed. Pray that these antibiotics start working soon!

I have lots to say but I wanted to wish you son a very :bday::cake::cheer2:

Get well soon!

Ladies,

I was looking for something for dinner while I waited for the final results of the moms panel and stumbled upon your thread. It looks like we have a bunch of good cooks here. I must say that I am from the south and I can tell which of you are also. (I've been told by family in Wisc that we cook different things, I guess they're somewhat right) It was super fun reading what you all eat and thanks for some ideas. I'll be sure to check back.
Hope those of you who are sick feel better soon!
Anyone apply for or make it to the finals of the moms panel?
Julie

Kroger had NY Strip steaks on sale for $3.99 a pound so I bought some last night - they are DH's fave cut. When he spotted them, he decided we need to have two for dinner tonight and freeze the rest.

I thought that I got a great deal last Sunday but this really has mine beat.

P/T conf. went amazing last night....Ross sometimes scares us with how smart he is, lol. He had straight A's and one B+, (that was in science and their whole grade was based on 1 test that he flipped flopped 2 answers on, and didn't double check, lol) The only issue we had is he (ahem) talks to much in class, lol...hmm wonder where he gets that from,;) He was beating himself up about the B+ though so we had to help him on that one a bit. We also got the test results back from the NWEA testing (this is country wide so some of you might have heard of it) and I do have to brag a bit, as the princepal himself was there to give us Ross' results as he was so impressed with his scores, Ross rocked these!! His scores were off the chart. So he kind of forgot about his B+ once he saw these, lol.

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Good for Ross!!!!! My sister was like him, had to have straight A's or she was disappointed in herself. She is one of the smartest and focused people I know. Ross' work ethic is going to take him to great places. Now as to the talking.........That is a complaint I am so used to...:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Welcome to our little bunch! All of the recipes are on the front page so they are not lost in the chatter, and we do seem to chatter a little :rolleyes1.
Please feel free to jump in and share your menus and any recipes, we love to have them. Did you make the Mom's panel?

ETA: dinner was very good tonight. I went to Stew Leonards Sunday and this is my new favorite place to buy meat. I never buy a bone in pork roast becasue they have not been so good lately. The butchering has looked, well, butchered. This was cut right and tasted like I remembered that it was supposed to taste. I was also able to find "naked" meat for only about 40 cents a pound more than teh "all natural" and that price was lower then the grocery stores around me and at least as low as Costco.

Now I am patiently waiting for room to be created becasue I made Kathy's warm winter cake and it looks yummy.

I'd love to take credit for it Nan, but it's Glynis' recipe. I've made it so many times you probably thought it was mine.:lmao: It's THAT GOOD!!!!:thumbsup2

Stephanie -- Happy birthday to your son! I'm glad you don't have the flu. Hopefully, the antibiotics will kick in and you'll feel a lot better tomorrow.

Wendie -- Kudos to Ross! :thumbsup2 You must be so proud.

Sandy -- Right now, my house is a balmy 65 degrees. I plan to turn the thermostat down to 60 shortly. It was 58 in the house one morning...now that was a little chilly. ;)

I hope everyone else who has been not feeling well is starting to improve. It is so early, but it seems like half the kids I see have nasty coughs, drippy noses, etc. Liam told me today that he thinks he is getting a cold because he has a little sore throat. I hope he is wrong!

Dinner tonight was pasta with tomato sauce, spinach bread and salad.

Happy Birthday to your son! I hope you get to feeling better. Strep is horrible.

I'm hoping that it will break through this blasted cold that I have! I'm hating it!!! I just don't have time to be sick. Hopefully, it will run it's course and leave me alone by this weekend.

I hope you feel better soon (and hope the children don't get it).

Bob really enjoyed his dinner & appreciated it extra much cus he knew I felt sick. His comment after dinner was "It's a good life, no, It's a good Wife!"

What a sweet husband. It's nice to be appreciated. :goodvibes

Congrats to Ross for a wonderful report card.

Looks like my internet is back, not sure for how long. I saw a cable truck pass by a few minutes ago.:rolleyes1

Sounds like our cable company. They cut the phone line when running new cable down our street. :sad2:

WELCOME Julie!!!! Come back and post often. We are a friendly (and quite chatty) group.

But Nancy dear, dessert is a whole separate part of the stomach. You should always have room for dessert, especially one which sounds so very good. ;)

Brrrrr Laura. I would be freezing. This southern girl keeps the house no less than 68 degrees.

Sorry Kathy, I thought it was yours, and you are so right...it is really good! I told my aunt that I was going to make it an she asked me when I was coming back :lmao::lmao::lmao:. It is he favorite :thumbsup2

Laura- I hope that Liam does not get that cold, it is nasty. I think that it has hit almost everyone lately :sad2:

Laura ~ I'd freeze to death in your house! I turn the heat on when it gets down to 72 in our house. Even at 72 I can't stand it and wrap myself in my electric throw. I'm miserable when I'm cold.

Good morning ladies!

I hope everyone who was under the weather is feeling better today.

WFD - Hamburger stroganoff, noodles and beet salad.

Have a great day.:goodvibes

Morning all--

I know that we have raised Ross to be a kind and sharing child, BUT he did not have to go so far as to share his cold with me,lol...yep I woke up with it this morning...blah! I am heading back to bed now that he is off to school.

WFD--Ross wants a burger and cukes after karate, and I think I will want nyquil, lol. Kris will eat at a meeting he has tonight.

Have a great day all!

Wendie- I hope that you feel better soon.

I have not planned dinner tonight. We were planning to go to the new Cabelas store but now I am not sure we going to. I'll figure out the meal if we end up staying home.

Thanks for the nice Welcome ladies!!!

No, I did not make it all the way to the panel. I was booted out after the second round. We did have 6 DISers make it though. The entire things was a blast and I would do it again. My family really thinks I'm a Disney nerd now!

For dinner we are having homemade chicken pot pie (I'll have to make a small pot of chicken noodle soup for my middle daughter she won't eat the pot pie) I will make her take a no thank you bite though. Anyone else have picky eaters? I've heard it takes 15 times for a child to try something new before you can say they really don't like it.

WE LOVE CABELAS!!!!! The newest Cabelas opened not 10 miles from our house about a year ago! It's my husband's Mecca! He is a hunter/fisher, so it's made Christmas shopping for him so easy!!! My kids love the aquarium, and we'll go down there periodically to watch them feed the fish, and then eat in the cafe. It's so much fun!!!

Hi, Julie!!! Welcome to our foodie family!

I have picky eaters, as well. We made a rule before we even had kids that we would have them eat as many bites as they are old. Since it's been a rule from the beginning, they don't fight me on it. They take their bites, and if they honestly don't like the dinner, they know where the peanut butter and jelly are kept. I have found that my oldest daughter (10 years old), now doesn't fight me at all. Her tastes are maturing, and she willingly tries new things. The other kids aren't there, yet, but they do take their bites before turning up their noses! Case in point, last night I made chicken satay with a peanut dipping sauce. They each tried their bites, and half of them decided they didn't like the sauce, but they loved the marinade on the chicken. So, I call that a win/win!

Dinner tonight is kind of up in the air. It's Jacob's birthday and he requested teriyaki salmon. That's fine with me, however, Leslie woke up this morning with a very high fever, so I don't know if I'll be able to get to the store to pick up the salmon. So, I may have to do the salmon another night, and go with spaghetti instead. Hopefully, Jacob will be understanding. We are going to have birthday cake, and Alan will pick up some ice cream on his way home.

I second you on that our DD9 will try just about anything now without complaining, but our DD 6 NO WAY, our DS 3 will eat anything as long as he doesn't hear his sisters complain. Once he hears them say Yuck, it's all over. So we have a rule keep your comments to yourself, everyone has different taste buds!! This works (most of the time)

A Cabela's just opened less than 10 minutes from our house at the beginning of October! Needless to say DH was like a kid at Christmas. He had the big Cabelas catalog out everynight for a week. I'm not sure if he was checking prices to see if they would be the same in the store, or just making a really BIG list! We were there twice opening weekend. It is across the highway from a newly expanded outlet mall, so I guess it's only fair we give the guys equal time! The kids did get a kick out of all the exotic wildlife displays.

WFD tonight....Hmmm...leftover buffet....chili & cornbread, chicken & sausage jambalaya, or Glynis' crockpot Chicken & Dumplings.

Glynis - I did have a question about your Chx & Dumpling recipe. If I recall, it called for 2 cans of refrigerator biscuits. What size can do you use? I doubled the recipe you had posted, but only used 1 can of the smaller size biscuits (I think 10/can).

Hope everyone kicks the crud that seems to be making its way around. Off to wash my hands.....;) :rotfl:

Wendie -- I'm sorry you're sick now too. I think Kathy is right, we are somehow spreading germs here! Get better soon.

Glynis -- Happy Birthday to Jacob!

Welcome Julie! My two can be picky sometimes, but I have a new trick. I recently discovered that if I serve everything family style so they can choose what to put on their plates and in what quantities, they try a lot more things than if I plate the food for them.

I have leftovers from the pot roast the other night that I am considering turning into a shepherd's pie...I really can't explain why I feel like doing this because shepherd's pie reminds me of my grade school cafeteria. The menu may change.

Thanks Laura, I'll remember that. I know my oldest likes to do this she calls it "Little House on the Prairie Style" too funny some of the things they come up with.
