My son's school actually sends home parent cheat sheets for the math homework. Fortunately, I haven't needed to use them...yet -- he's only in second grade -- but the way they teach math now is so different from when I was in school. He was doing fractions, word problems and metric measurements this year. The most math I do these days is balancing my checkbook, and I don't do a very good job at that some months!

We get the cheat sheets too! :) Andrew is in the 3rd grade and there have been times when I can't even explain things to him...it is totally different than when we were kids. :confused3 I was never great in math to begin with...:) Thank God he understands most of it!!!

I was actually pretty good in math, but it is nothing compared to the way the subject is taught now. It takes me longer to check Liam's homework than it takes him to do it sometimes. He's like, "Mom, are you done yet??"

we did shish kabobs tonight for the FIRST time! I need help though- potatoes were hard and beef was a bit dry-do you boil them first or something? That is my next idea the next time we have them-but I basted them with olive oil mixed with garlic flakes, garlix salt, pepper, and a mixed seasoning I have with spinach and spices in it. The baste was yummy, though! We had red peppers, onions, sausage, cubes of steak and red potatoes quartered.
Ideas WELCOME!!

Today my husband and I are going with a friend to Jason's Deli (I am addicted to their salad bar) and to see POTC.

WFD at your house?

Happy Memorial Day!!

Hi Lori, I have never put potatoes on shish kabobs but I would try par boiling them and then putting them on...as for the beef, just cook them a little less or maybe not on the grill directly...

--------

We, like Lindsay, are going to see POTC today. We will grill steaks when we get home with sides of baked sweet potatoes and salad...I think.

Have a great day all!

Good Morning all! I got a good chuckle picturing kids checking parents math homework. I'm glad tohear that it is still that way, I always had to have my oldest help the the others with their math homework. The school did not give us a cheat sheet and I was always lost. I stopped watching "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader" because Buddy and I were not smarter than the 1st graders popcorn::.

Yesterday I went with my sis, brother and his wife to the cemetery and to visit some cousins. It was kind of surreal to go and not report back to my Mom. Anyway we had all planned not to discuss our kids because we wanted to avoid the "Eric is so smart" thing from my cousin. No such luck. Somehow She went from :Kids don't play outside anymore" to "My Eric always had such an imagination" to "Well, he has 7 children now and needed more money so he gave his notice and the company raised his salary to more than the $250 K that he was making and added two $50 K bonuses a year." "Well he got the first and it was $70 K. See it all starts with the training I gave him when he was little and he was playing with his toys. :cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9: " "Oh my other two. They are fine, NOw back to my Eric......." :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1:

We needed a good meal at Chuck's after that!

Today we are having a little BBQ. I know that I am making Glynis ranch salad and baked beans, I think a "spaghetti salad, and watermelon. Kielbasa, hot dogs and teryaki turkey burgers and burgers.

Happy Memorial Day!

I don't make shish kabobs as the kids would never eat them -- they are still in the foods can't be touching one another stage -- but my mom makes them. Did you marinate the beef before grilling it? That will help with the dryness. My mom just marinates hers in Good Seasons Italian dressing, at least overnight, but usually for a couple days. She doesn't put potatoes on her skewers, just beef, peppers and onions, and sometimes mushrooms. When I cook potatoes on the grill, I season them and then wrap them up tightly in aluminum foil. They take about 30 minutes.

Tonight I think I am going to make fajitas with the leftovers from the weekend.

To those going to see Pirates tonight PLEASE make sure you stay until after the credits are over. The wait is long but worth it!!! We went back to see it last night and I kept telling people as they were walking out to sit back down and wait, only 2 people listened to me. Afterwards they said they were glad they did.

Tonight we are having country style steak with gravy and mashed potatoes. Not the usual Memorial Day food by any means.

If you boil or microwave the potatoes a little bit before throwing them on the grill that will also help.

You can microwave or boil the potatoes briefly before grilling to make sure they are completely done.

Re POTC Yes definitely stay till the very end. There is a million credits, but stay.

Tonight we are having brined chicken on the rosterie baked potatoes and corn.

I need advice from all of you. I received a call from my stepbrother, at the end of June we are going to spread my Stepmom's and Dad's ashes. Do you think you would bring your kids? I am torn. It almost feels as if they just died all over again.

Lori - I always put the potatoes on a separate skewer so they can cook longer.

I feel bad for them!

Tonight we're going to have a little surf & turf, courtesy of Omaha Steaks - grilled filets, stuffed sole, au gratin potatoes & leftover macaroni salad from yesterday!

Lauren - have you tried the au gratin potatoes yet?

 I will keep you in my thoughts & prayers during this difficult time. I would only bring the kids if they want to be there.

I think it depends on the kids ages and if they want to go. When my grandfather passed away, ds was 3 at the time and he went to the memorial service which was in Feb. but we didn't have his ashes spread until May and ds did not go. He had a tough time at the service as he and my gramps were very close.
He is 10 now and I would have him come IF he wanted to......................
I am so sorry, it is just as hard as losing them to begin with.......

When we do kebobs on the grill, we just do meat, or shrimp with onions and peppers and then in tinfoil I do sliced potatos with onions and garlic with butter.

I too can't help ds with his math homework.....reading, social studies even science yes BUT math not at all. Ds is in the gifted and talents program at school which is for math and reading. The math he is doing is at 8th grade level.....it baffels me...it looks familiar and I remember being lost back in 8th grade....he has these logic word problems that 5 words in and I am so confused......right now they are doing fractions as well, that I can handle.....(or so I thought, until he had me help him on a few and when he got the paper back he had them wrong, and what he thought was the answer was correct, oops) dh is a math whiz so when ds has a question I have him call him at work and ds puts it on speaker to have him help him with it. The others in ds office find it amusing that I can't do it.........I told them I was to busy baking them cookies to be helping with math...( I bake every week for dh's office)
glad to see I am not alone........just one more thing we here on the wfd have in common, ;)

Speaking of WFD----tonight we will have sirloin tip steaks on the grill with sweet baby ray's and corn with a side dish of beef rice.

Mmmm. Shish kabobs sound yummy! I've never done potatos on them, I imagine they would take quite a bit longer to do though. We usually do mushrooms, pineapple, meat (pork, steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, etc).

Tonight we're having leftovers! We have a lot of fajita meat and fixings left from Saturday so we're having those. I may make mine into quesedillas on our quesidilla maker.

Why can't I spell that word? Quesedilla? Quesidella? It can't be that hard! =)

Dinner tonight will be Dijon Chicken and Spinach. We had our Memorial Day celebration yesterday, so no cookout for me! Actually, DH works late today, and the grill is his territory.

Count me among those that can't help with math homework. It just boggles my mind. I don't get it. I'm ok through second or third grade, but after that, I'm done!
