The Official "Thanksgiving at Fort Wilderness 2009" Thread

We will be there from 11/25 through 11/29. This will be our first of what I hope many Thanksgivings at the Fort.

Everyone, this is great news that so many Dissers will be there. Make sure you have your green Dis signs prominently displayed. I for one will be looking for you.

To all the Thanksgiving Fort Dissers:

Here in Birmingham, Alabama where I live there is a 10k race (6.2 mile) on every Thanksgiving Day morning that is the oldest continuous race in town (over 30 years straight). I have done it for many years (although not the last 2) because it's a good feeling to burn off some calories to make room for the ones you are about to eat:thumbsup2.

I'm in no shape to do 6 miles. I'm in no shape to run. But I still like the idea of burning off some calories to make room for the new ones. Would anyone be interested in maybe doing a walk on Thanksgiving morning for about 45 miutes-1 hours around the Fort sidewalks? Pace to be determined by the group but should be something we can all handle; no race, I'm calling it a walk. We could meet at the Meadow Trading Post maybe 7:30 a.m. (on the 900 loop side), get in a walk while it's still cool, and make room for the pumpkin pie and turkey/dressing.

Let me put it this way - I'm going to do a walk on Thanksgiving morning and it would be fun to have some Dissers to talk with. I don't know if anyone willing wants to start earlier or later but I am flexible.

I may post this idea as a seperate thread but is anyone interested? :cool1: I'm looking forward to my first Thanksgiving at the Fort.

We will be there from 11/20-11/29. It can't come soon enough!! :rolleyes1Don't know which loop yet, besides Premium/Pet.
Thanksgiving is wonderful at FW. I love to see all the campsites decorated for the holidays. It really is spectacular. We watched one person set up for 3 days last year. I could not believe how many decorate so elaborately.

The walk on Thanksgiving morning sounds terrific! :yay: I can't make no promises, but we will definately try and be there.

We won't be there this year, but I boldly made reservations for next year. It will be our first year ever doing things on our own (DH and me) away from our families (although I will still cook for my parents the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. I'll wait a while to break the news to them. I made reservations yesterday for 7 days (Monday through Monday) in 2010. I'm already planning. I hope that when the time comes we can meet some of you there. We try to go 4 to 5 times a year, but never over a Thanksgiving. I'll be reading posts preparing.

and be departing on the 4th. Thanks to everyone this past year on helping me with all my questions. I guess you can say I am excited to finally have my 1st trip down to the fort but the long drive has me concerned a little. I am glad we are going to Sarasota for 3 days to relax a little before we hit Disney. That way we can be rested up for a whirlwind visit.

Sounds like it's going to be a fun time at the Fort!

We'll be home, entertaining the inlaws, but I wanted to comment on the question about the turkey. In the past, we've found "fresh not frozen" turkeys hard to come by. But at many stores, you can "pre-order" one. If you're anxious about finding one when you get to Orlando, maybe you can call around now/in a few weeks and reserve one? Just a thought!

Have fun, everyone.

My husband and I always do things on your own. We cook Thanksgiving the weekend before for the parents so they do not feel like they were jipped out of it. We also go to FW about 4 or 5 times a year. Thanksgiving is one of our favorite times of year (you will love it), it has become a tradition for us to go then. We still invite the parents to come if they like on Thanksgiving day. This year it will be mixed up, for my husband has to work Mon, Tues & Wed., so I will come back to Edgewater with him to get my mother who will be staying at FW with me during that time. Thankfully we live within 1 1/2 hours from FW. But it is all worth it. As long as I get to go to FW. :woohoo:

arriving friday have to have thanksgiving lunch with family first mom allways cooks and we are taking my parents camper so leaving right after we eat my sisters are going to clean up for us. hope to drive straight in with there being 3 people able to drive. staying till 12/5 then going to keys for a week. my reservation says full hookup, anybody know what that is and maybe loops? haven't been to the fort since 1999 when we camped with family. we are so looking forward to being there again! always go at this time of year is the best time, but we have been flying and staying at all star last 10 years.but our love for the fort allways draws us to visit stores and barn every year

See the Fort FAQ - Work In Progress sticky at the very top of page 1. All are listed there along with a map.

What a nice idea - hope you find someone to join you, my feet are in no condition for such an activity, and I don't think my ECV will help me burn any calories....LOL:laughing:

It's getting close - DH wants me to start packing and I just don't see the point - everything has to go in the trailer so until the trailer is in the driveway I'm not doin' nothin'.....

bam ed the walk on thanksgiving am sounds like fun the DW and I will be there it will be fun to meet you.:: we get in on the 14th leave on the 28th we can't wait 8 more days till we hit the road!!!!!!

Mike & Jan

Boy, I've got to work on my Thanksgiving menu this weekend because all the family members in my GG are asking what pots/pans/knives they need to bring to the Fort. Great to hear about everyone coming. I will look for all of you for our walk on Turkey Morning.

In fact, I think I need to post the walk as a seperate post to garner the most attendees. I'll do that here momentarily.
