Man, I've been looking for the DIS Oscar thread!!
I'm an Oscar junkie, and I'm glad there are others to talk to!
DD watched with me for the first 2 hours or so. She liked to critique the dresses and hair. We liked most all of the gowns. The big exception was Rebecca Miller's - Daniel Day Lewis' wife. That thing with the red bows on the shoulders was UGLY!!!
Didn't really like Jennifer Garner's hair, or Miley Cyrus' either. Miley's especially looked like she had a big dangly cowlick that needed to be pinned back. LOVED Jennifer Garner's necklace though!
Jon Stewart - he was great! LOVED his ad libs - "I have an announcement. There's a Boeing 737 at La Brea with its lights on. Will the owner please go and turn off the lights?" And John Travolta, not missing a beat, runs across the stage, with a wave to Jon.
And he was great when he let the female songwriter come back to finish her speech. Very nice.
Biggest shock? Definitely Tilda Swinton winning for Best Supporting Actress. I don't think anyone saw that one coming, even her. LOVED her getting back at George, teasing him about putting on that Bat suit, "the one with the nipples" under his wardrobe every day.
Marion Cotillard was so sweet! You could almost feel her excitement and shock - "Thank you love, thank you life!" That was a surprise too. I think most people thought Julie Christie would win. Reminded me of the year that Juliette Binoche upset Lauren Bacall.
DD takes Spanish and says that Javier Bardem was saying "This is for you mama, this is for your parents, this is for the people of Spain, this is for all of us." Poor guy got so much teasing about his haircut in No Country too.
I liked the historical montages, of all the previous Best Picture winners, but I'm a bit of a history buff. And I always watch for the "In Memoriam" segment. It was introduced this year by Hillary Swank, and was so sad when it ended with Heath Ledger.
Daniel Day Lewis was no surprise, but when all the upsets started, I was kind of hoping for Viggo Mortensen, a real long shot. I've had the biggest crush on him since his Aragon days, and he is just so talented! He was so sweet to bring his niece to the show.
And how about that slippery spot by the stage right podium? It just about took out so many - Miley, Colin Farrell, John Travolta, etc. You'd think the stage crew would have fixed that, like during the commercial breaks.
And finally, way to go Diablo Cody, screenwriter for Juno! She was a student here at the University of Iowa at the famous Writer's Workshop, and lived here from 1996 to 2000. She was Brook Busey then. Looks like she's moved up in the world!
