The Official LOST Season Five *No Spoilers* Thread

That still wouldn't make Desmond and Penny related. Eloise is Daniels mom not Desmonds ;). I don't think Penny is the daughter of Eloise.

I think you meant Penny and Daniel?

:rotfl2:YES! I meant Penny and Daniel...NOT Desmond! :rotfl2:

I like the theories on there of Dr. Chang (Mile's Dad) not turly abandon Miles and his Mom, but instead made them leave because he knew there was some wacky stuff going on on the island. Poor Miles though, that scene of him watching his little self made me tear up. :sad1:

I REALLY like the Dharma being the third "team" theory, makes complete sense with the Others communicating via computer to the mainland, the food drops, etc. I did not catch that Braham was the same guy on the beach with Illana when I was watching either-thanks for catching that!

Amy, I agree with you about Miles. He walked out of the sub like he was the king of the world or something-smart and confident. I was wondering if he had gone back to the mainland to study with Dharma and get a deeper understanding of the island-and figure out how to get everyone off.

Or maybe - how to change the future! (had to throw that in there ;))

:lmao: That's a good catch. I wonder if it was a oops or if the Dharma initiative made their money from inventing those cans.

Just like Hurley wrote Empire Strikes back! :rotfl:

I didn't post the pics but I'm the one who posted the TVguide bit and i just wanted to apologize if i ruined this episode for anyone. :flower3: I posted at work (don't tell my boss) in white letters and couldn't see it. However now that I am at home my screen is a little blue tinted and you can read it clearly. don't know if that is an issue with others or not but I didn't realize it varied from one computer to another.

Also, I see your point on this being a spoiler free thread and that there is a spoiler thread for those who don't mind knowing in advance. Since the tvguide description seems to be spoiler to some and non spoiler to others it makes the most sense to err on the conservative side and let's just all consider that spoiler and not discuss. For those (like me) who do not consider the tv guide episode title or description to be spoiler, i can just look it up and read myself without discussing.

When I read that naomi was in this one all kind of crazy things ran through my mind of why she was on the island again. It never dawned on me that it could be a rerun and so I wanted to see what everyone else was thinking. I guess I just got too excited and 'lost' control.

again i apologize if i offended anyone and hope we can just move forward from here ok? :)

Don't feel bad! Nothing posted recently was all that bad and it's that kinda stuff that just needs the gentle reminder, because we don't want anyone saying anything really earth shattering!

I don't think anybody is mad or offended here. I've seen people get slammed for posting spoilers in the past (not this thread, but others), so I look at these posts as sort of reminders of what most posters consider spoilers.

The ones posted here, including the picture of the new character are relatively mild compared to, say, telling us that Jack is going to kill Sawyer next week. :scared1:

What she said!!

Ok, back to discussing the show.

I re-watched the episode last night with my DS. At the very end where Daniel comes out of the sub and sees Miles and he says "Hi Miles, good to see you again" or something like that........Did Daniel seem different to you? The last time we saw him was when Sawyer's group was first captured by Dharma and they were sitting outside at night and Daniel saw young Charlotte walking by. Daniel was basically a blubbering idiot, mumbling about how he was NOT going to say anything to her, etc, etc. Daniel's always been kind of an absent-minded professor, but that scene made it look like he went off the deep end.

Then this week, he gets out of the sub and he seemed very confident and self-assured when he greeted Miles. Granted, it wasn't a very long scene, but he seemed different. I'm thinking he left on the sub shortly after they were captured by Dharma, went back to the "mainland" (or wherever the sub goes), and did some research and either (a) figured out how to get them back to the future or (b) figured out that it IS possible to change the past so that maybe Charlotte won't die.

What do you think?

I think he went back to the mainland and got some confidence back and is now here to help them through the Incident...I think it very possible that he seemed happy because he's back with a plan that he thinks could effect the future, but it also may be just because he understands his role. As the scientific type he is, he might be confident enough in his rules to be able to live with them when many others can't (like a lot of people on this thread! lol), but we know he was hanging out in the Orchid station. So either he is getting them back to the future or trying to change it (or both).

So um...yeah...basically I just said what you said! :lmao:

I'm not mad at anyone, I realize that nobody intentionally posted a spoiler and that opinions differ. I think we've cleared it up now though. :goodvibes

What you posted was fine, I didn't see it at all. You poster a possible spoiler warning and did the white lfont (though it can still be seen on the blue screen you have to work hard at it so it's easy to ignore) so it wasn't you at all.

That being said I don't men to call anyone out, like I said I know nobody did it on purpose. I'm just bummed in general because it would have been awesome to see that character without expecting it, and the picture ruins all the fun I had with the "who is he" theories.

Whiting out is awesome :) It gives the rest of us a chance to quickly scroll by. Even the pic wasn't the end of the world, but I'd just rather not know yet. Even a giant "Media Spoiler Ahead" at the top of the post for that stuff would let us scroll past it without reading.

EXACTLY! The Hostiles/Others took over Dharma-ville after the purge. They had Patchy in that communication station, prob. keeping in touch with off-island Dharma, trying to pretend that everything was A-Ok on the island, keeping the food drops coming. Desmond was pretty much clueless (or so we think) in the Swan - remember how he thought he couldn't even go outside the station unless he put on that protective suit?

But wouldn't the off-island Dharma folks start to get suspicious when they only heard from certain people, and never heard from Horace (head Dharma guy) or Dr. Chang/Candle (head scientist guy)?

And remember that Locke did let Dharma know that something was wrong. It triggered the explosives the destroyed the station. That means that Dharma does know that something is going on and could very well have sent their own faction to take care of things.

Yep, you're right. I forgot about Locke playing that game of chess and pressing the code that meant the hostiles were there and then the whole communications station blew up.

And I don't consider it a spoiler if it is on TV or in something like TV Guide. I think spoilers are when people go digging for info that is not readily available.

IMO, it's a spoiler if it's pertaining to something that hasn't happened yet. Even if it's on tv or TV Guide, it doesn't mean that everyone has seen it, or that they want to see it if they're reading this thread. (I know I don't.)

Very good point!! I forgot about the station blowing up.

I have no clue why Smokey didn't come when Ben summoned it...? Good question.

How come the smoke monster didn't come when Ben summoned it?

Well, Ben DID meet up with smokey, but Locke had to lead him to where Smokey was. So I'm thinking maybe that was the beginning of Ben's "punishment" of following Locke....Ben summoned Smokey, but Smokey didn't appear, instead Ben had to trust Locke to lead him to Smokey.

How come the smoke monster didn't come when Ben summoned it?

I thought more of it as Ben releasing the smoke monster than summoning it. like perhaps the water was a barrier or something and that when Ben flushed the toilet it removed the barrier. I don't think Ben had control over it once it was released but only while it was 'captive'. :confused3

Ben said something like he just called him, he didn't know where smokey would end up, didn't he?

Since he warned Sun away, Ben seemed pretty sure Smokey was coming to him. I think the person who said Locke had to lead him to the monster was right. It was just the beginning of Smokey showing Ben who the new boss in town is.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but my hubby caught an oopsie. In the scene where Kate was talking to Bens dad and she opened the beer it was one of the tabs like we have now. In the seventies weren't they still the pull tabs?

Some of you guys really are way too OCD when it comes to attention to detail :lmao: I didn't notice the can at all. At first I read this as pull tabs versus non-pull tabs, then I realized what you meant. However, I got curious and checked Wiki for when pull tabs were first introduced. I didn't realize how long they were around:

The first all-aluminum cans were the same as their forebears, which still used the can opener to open them. Mikola Kondakow of Thunder Bay, Ontario invented the pull tab version for bottles in 1956 [Canadian patent 476789]. Then, in 1962, Ermal Clayton of Dayton, Ohio, invented the similar integral rivet and pull-tab version (also known as rimple or ring pull), which had a ring attached at the rivet for pulling, and which would come off completely to be discarded. He received U.S. Patent No. 3,349,949 for his pull-top can design in 1963 and licensed his invention to Alcoa and Pittsburgh Brewing Company. It was first introduced on Iron City Beer cans by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. The first soft drinks to be sold in all-aluminum cans were R.C. Cola and Diet-Rite Cola, both made by the Royal Crown Cola company, in 1964.

And if you read further in that article it talks about the current form of tabs called stay tabs. That is the kind of tab they had on the Dharma beer cans. And according to wikipedia, they were invented in 1975. So, it is possible that Dharma used them on their beer cans.

Stay tabs (also called colon tabs) were invented by Daniel F. Cudzik of Reynolds Metals in Richmond, Virginia, in 1975 [1] [2], partly to prevent the injuries caused by removable tabs. In this can model described in U.S. Patent No. 3,967,752,[3] the lid contains a scored region and a pull-tab that can be leveraged to open the hole by pushing the scored region into the can. Stay tabs almost completely replaced pull-tabs in many parts of the world by the early 1980s, though pull-tabs are still common in places such as China and the Middle East.

Thanks for that. I was looking for that specific info and missed it. Lots to read in that article.

Tonights is some kind of recap. Probably worth watching anyway! :thumbsup2
