*** The Official July 2014 thread, join us won't you? ***

:offtopic: Today has been a pretty relaxing day. Midori's volleyball team won again, 1st game 21 to 9 Midori had 11 service points, 2nd game 21 to 5 Midori had 10 service points.

I thought this team was going to give our team a run for the win but it did not happen..

I can't believe how they have developed into a go working team. We have 2 boys almost at 6 feet and they both can spike !!!! :cool1: If the other team returns Midori's serve the team sets up and one of the boys spikes it to the floor quickly.

The games are supposed to be best 2 out of 3 but so far our Team has not lost one to go to the 3rd game.

I have been a great :cheer2: and line judge. :mic:

We were supposed to have :umbrella: today, but it has been very hot and :beach:

Happy happy Friday!!!! That is fantastic how your sons classmates mom gave you a call over the ice cream concern :) sounds like you have a good school community over there & the teacher is doing her part. I know how proud you must be of your son, taking control of his allergy!
I used to be very active in the drama club when I was on school, but enjoyed the stage managing and lighting more than acting, which is funny because ds13 is into that as well. Sounds like you keep busy between school, drama, and of course home stuff.
Nothing worse than back pain, arghhhh! I hope you feel better soon. Some things unless you have gone through it personally you can't sympathize ~ after ds10 was born I developed a slipped disc, the horrid pain. Even walking up a stair was tragic. Thank goodness w/some light excersize and time it diminished.
Soooooo did you decide on V&A !?!????
Next week we have inventory and my boss wanted me to come in on Sunday, but sometimes you have to say no. My ds13 has developed some sort of attitude and I've noticed a change, therefore I can't afford to go to work 6 days a week anymore, priorities.
~~~ here's to everyone having a GREAT weekend!!! ~~~~
Yes, we have a terrific school community and a very nice neighborhood. It's like our little small town in Brooklyn. The neighborhood is very close-knit, and many of the people I went to school with now have kids in the same school. Some are even in my boys' classes and we've taken some strolls down memory lane. It's nice to see everyone doing so well and to see the next generation at the school. My parents take the boys to school and pick them up, and my mom has seen some of the people she used to see when I was a kid, also taking their grandchildren to school now! We have our little mom & pop stores, our local pizzeria and Chinese restaurant, and our local coffee shop. The man who owns the pizzeria gets a kick out of seeing my kids because he remembers me when I was like 4 years old coming in with my parents. And at the Chinese restaurant, they remember us as kids when they first opened. They started as a tiny take-out place with a couple of booths and they eventually turned into this very big restaurant...a beautiful place too. We had DS8's first birthday party there! :) if you google Marine Park, Brooklyn, you will probably find some info on what a close-knit, friendly community it is. Definitely not what people expect of NYC or Brooklyn!:rotfl2:
As far as slipped discs, I had a horrible one in my neck in the spring of 2011. It was such bad pain that I couldn't sleep and it was ver frustrating. The only thing that took the edge off a little was Vicodin, and taking painkillers scares me. But I was desperate and the doctor told me to take it as prescribed. I only took it at night because I went to work as many days as I could, suffering in pain. My students helped out a lot because I couldn't keep my arm steady enough to write on the board. The pain was in the shoulder and radiated to the arm and hand...my right side and I'm a righty. Initially the pain was in the shoulder and I thought that maybe I tore a rotator cuff or something. Nothing showed on an x-ray and the pain kept getting worse even with steroid anti-inflammatory meds. Eventually I was sent for an MRI that indicated the disc was pressing on the nerve root and that was what was causing the pain.The orthopedist said i would definitely need surgery and I started crying like a baby, thinking about having spinal surgery. He recommended i see a neurosurgeon for this type of surgery. I found a wonderful neurosurgeon who looked at the MRI and also said I definitely needed surgery. He explained how they do it minimally invasive now, and I'd only miss 2 to 3 weeks of work. That was great news. They did the surgery 6 days later, which was just about a month since the pain had first started. They cut into the front of the neck and were able to remove the disc and place a piece of bone in the space that would eventually fuse. I woke up from the surgery with no more arm and shoulder pain. It felt like a miracle. I started physical therapy a couple of weeks later and I had a wonderful physical therapist. He has since guided me with safer exercises for me to do during my workouts. I had been exercising way too intensely, lots of cardio kickboxing from a program called Turbo Fire (DVDs). The strenuous activity could have very well been the cause of the herniated disc, according to both the surgeon and the physical therapist. So i had to be very careful at that point. I made excellent progress in a short period of time, because I did everything I was instructed to do at home by my physical therapist. The spine fused completely within a year of the surgery.
I still have residual numbness in my right index finger from the nerve issue. There is probably partial nerve damage because of how the disc was pressing on the nerve for a few weeks. But I'll take it over pain any day. It's only a tiny amount of numbness, I still have plenty of feeling in that finger.
Now, on to happier things...as far as V&A's, I think we're going to end up going there! The only thing holding back DH is that he has to wear a jacket there and he's not too thrilled about having to do that in July! But, he could carry it to the car and just put it on once we're inside the restaurant. And with the TIW card, if you dine at a resort and show your receipt from the restaurant, valet parking is free...we just have to tip and that's it. So that means dh doesn't even have to walk through the parking lot in the heat with pants on. I think I can convince him, especially since this is the last chance for a TIW discount to be available. They will stop taking the TIW card on August 1, 2014. Seems like this is the right time to go there! And the kids can enjoy the kids' club at Beach Club. I'll even be the one to walk them over there from BWV so DH doesn't have to walk in the heat with pants on! ;)
Just wanted to share my excitement with those that would care. 32 days until our fall Disney trip! I can't wait! :cool1:
I have also been incorporating as much Disney into my science lessons as possible. The kids love the examples, especially the ones that have gone and can appreciate them and it gives me a reason to talk about Disney.
Woo-hoo, I'll count down with you and do the happy dance for you! :dance3:
It's grea that you incorporate Diane into science lessons...students definitely learn better when you give them something related to real life, and Disney is definitely a big part of a lot of their lives whether it's the movies, tv shows, or WDW. I'm all for bringing the real world into the classroom, it certainly works for my students.
How exciting that your trip is so close! AKL is such a beautiful resort too. On all 3 of our family trips, we went to eat somewhere there and we really love visiting there. We went to Boma for breakfast last time and it was very good. We went to Sanaa in 2010 at Kidani and that was fantastic for dinner. Great food, and we sat by the window so it was fun to see the animals while we ate dinner. I have to see if we have room for a meal at AKL or Sanaa again, so we could go see the animals. So far I can't find space, but I frequently change my mind so you never know before January comes and it's time to make ADRs. ;)
:) I love your stories about your small town. We live in a small town as well although not so close knit as yours. We are about 15 miles north of Boston. We have our "corner store" little town pizza place and the breakfast place owned by a family for the last 70 yrs.
That must have been scary, I'm not to keen on surgery (but who is?) My issue was certainly not as severe as yours obviously. But, I'm glad the pain for you is now history.
When I was married I was addicted to excersize, running, lifting weights, and hours on treadmill. But, back then I was able to only work part-time. Now, arghhh... I'm actually considering cutting back an hour a day at work so I can join a gym. At 40 it's alot harder to keep in shape than it was at 20 or even 30.
I'm excited that you will end up going to V&A ~ I even looked it up when you mentioned it and it looks unbelievable... The experience alone.
My twins are in 8th grade and I can't believe it. One of the things they have the option to do is a trip to Washington, D.C.. One boy wants to and the other doesn't. I know it's expensive and hoping they have some sort of fundraiser to help with the cost or else not sure I can do both WDW and pay for the boys DC trip. Hmmm.
~~~ gosh we do get off topic here don't we?

Hey, we're not totally off topic here...we're just getting to know our fellow July WDW visitors! :thumbsup2

I know what you mean about it being hard to stay in shape. I'm 36 and it's a lot harder to bounce back from vacation or holiday weight gain than it was 10 years ago. It comes off, I just have to work very hard for that to happen. It's hard to stay disciplined when you love to eat all different types of great food. If I didn't exercise my weight would likely be about 10-15 pounds higher than it is. I try to multi-task. While the boys are doing their homework, I exercise. When I'm finished, I check their homework and have them make any necessary corrections. This year DS8 has to read 45 minutes a day, which is the typical length of my workouts. So it's, "you read, and when I'm done exercising, you're finished!" It's tough though, balancing everything. I'm lucky I work so close to home so I only have a 10-minute commute...15 minutes if we get stuck ate few traffic lights. :rotfl2:

Your community sounds very nice too. I love the family owned businesses. I do like shopping at large stores like Target and Kohls but there's something special about the mom & pop stores.

Wow. A DC trip!! Sounds amazing. Hopefully the school will have a fundraising option...I think schools usually do that. I remember in high school having to sell candy to fundraise for the trips to Orlando with chorus...those trips were so much fun and I'm glad I got to go. We were in the All American Music Festival. The first trip I was a freshman and we came in fourth place. The second trip, my junior year, we came in first place. And we got to go to WDW and Universal! Good times!! :goodvibes

My niece is going on a trip with band from her school this year to Hershey, Pennsylvania. She's really looking forward to it and it's all she talks about since school started last week! She's in 7th grade and she plays saxophone. Her sister is in 5th grade and plays trumpet. And my DS8 has been in singing lessons for 2 years! Lol, I guess they all take after me! :lmao:

Very true & I do try to add in a WDW comment here and there :) I spend almost 4 hours per day on my commute.. And it drives me mad thinking of all the things I can accomplish on even half that time (toner arms for one!) would love to find a job closer to home but I've been doing this for 7 yrs and not even sure I would know how to interview any more.
36 is actually a great age! You are still mid-thirties, for some reason just turning 40 seems so different and I don't know why. I love the small community for the little mom and pop places. But, man I love my Starbucks, Malls & Cheesecake Factory or Legal Seafood! We actually live off a major highway Rte 1... I live in Saugus, Ma. So it's kind of a small town meets malls and restaurants galore!

Your town sounds like the perfect balance! I'm sorry you have such a long commute. Same for my sister who works as an assistant principal in the Bronx, but she loves her job and her school so the commute is worth it for her. But I know it's still rough in a lot of ways...traffic, and being away from her kids for longer than she would like. At least this year she will have a lot of time at home because she is due to have her baby in late January. She has a lot of sick days saved up so she can spend a lot of time with the baby, and she will get to spend a lot of time with my nieces as well.

I also love certain chains. I love Dunkin Donuts coffee, and on the road on the way to WDW we love Cracker Barrel and we actually love Cicis pizza despite being from Brooklyn and usually disliking chain restaurant pizza! Won't touch Papa Johns! :lmao: I also love Red Robin and the Cheesecake Factory.

Oh my gosh! That's exciting. :) I think figuring out fast pass + would add to the excitement along with receiving the MB. I can imagine going a bit crazy having to figure all of the reservations out, but again adds to excitement and ultimately makes the vacation all the more relaxing I would guess. Can't wait to hear the details when you return. I can imagine dressing up for the Halloween to be hot and uncomfortable but sounds so fun. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy hearing all about this stuff.

Angalee - We care !!!!!!! so much we want to go with you guys..:yay:

AKL - Love it now since you got us to try it out.... :thumbsup2 We'll count down with you.....:cool1:

My pleasure!! Keep posting how excited you are about going soon. I love reading about others' excitement and counting down their WDW trips. Plus I can't wait to read all about your trip afterwards...but I want the trip to go slowly for you once it comes, so I could wait! ;)

I've been looking at my ADRs over and over again as I do every trip just to make sure they are perfect. My daughter was disappointed that we were not eating in the castle after our July trip. She loved dinner there, but I did get an Akershus for breakfast on one of our days before park opening so I think she will be excited about that. She likes the princess appease there and we haven't been there in two years so it's something different. We are also taking the kids to Jiko this trip. They have never been but we really like it there. They are well behaved in restaurants so we thought they were old enough to try. They kids spent the ride in the car today talking about rides and where to go each day. I can't wait to go.

I'm the same with ADRs...already changed things around a few times for the July trip. :rotfl2:

We're also going to try Jiko in July. Never been there. On our 2012 trip we took the boys to their first 2 signatures (and our first as well), California Grill and Yachtsman. We loved both of them. This time we're gonna go to Flying Fish and Jiko. We were going to go back to Yachtsman but we can't fit it in along with Jiko. DS8's favorite food is steak so I asked him if it's ok if we go to a different restaurant instead of Yachtsman, but where they also have steak on the kids' menu and he was fine with that. I told him it's at AKL and we could go outside and see the animals. That made him even happier. We love going to AKL/AKV to eat just to also see the inside of the resort and the animals. So beautiful and peaceful over there. :)

It's great your kids are getting involved with the excitement of the trip. I love when the trip gets close, like within a few weeks, and we talk about all the rides we're going on and all the fun we're gonna have. That's the best time, when it's so close you could almost feel it! :thumbsup2

I am under 300 DAYS!!!!! :rockband: :disrocks: :lmao:

I feel that way too :cool1: This is the longest we have been between trips and it's been a bit much for my mind to grasp :rolleyes1

Sitting on 275 today and counting. I've kind of broken it up in my mind into manageable segments, so we have Halloween next month, then school stuff gets crazy in the run up to Christmas which forms a minor distraction, by which time park hours should hopefully be released, and once I have park hours, we can start planning our days :cool1: Talk about wishing our lives away :rotfl:

I break things up too, looking forward to the fun stuff in between. I prefer to think of it as looking forward to good times, rather than wishing my life away! ;)

Our next fun thing planned is my niece's birthday party this Sunday. Then Columbus Day weekend, we're going to Lancaster Pennsylvania overnight from that Saturday to Sunday. Then Halloween, our anniversary, thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years, my mom and DS8's birthdays in January and my sister is due to have a baby boy later in January! Once my new nephew is here time will fly for sure!

Way to be positive! :goodvibes

Come on .... catch up!!! :rotfl: Oh packing ..... erm, I am a pack the night before kind of gal :eek: My logic is that if I only pack it when I need it, I won't think something is packed when it's not. Or more typically I won't pack something that my DD decides she wants to use and takes it out without letting me know because she had MEANT to put it back ..... :rolleyes1

Hi!!! Been busy at work. Today I didn't even get to eat lunch...taught all my classes, worked with my student teacher who is wonderful, and had a meeting for the show I'm running. Before I knew it, the bell rang and time to go take DS8 to his first singing lesson of the year.

Definitely happy it's the weekend! Have a great one, everybody! :goodvibes

Thank goodness it's Saturday! Happy weekend all! I have been playing around with my ADR choices and park days. So difficult when you don't know the hours yet. ESP when braving a holiday week like the 4th... But sooo much fun to think about! :)
Have a great weekend
