The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Regina also poked at them earlier, and their "open" marriage, when she was calling single guys up to retake their Covid tests. Good thing he didn't punch her too.
We have a framed I Am Legend poster on our basement wall, dh is planning to take it down, and he didn't watch the show last night.

I looked up what condition Jada has: it’s called “traction alopecia” many African American women suffer from it. It’s caused by years of weaves, braids, tugging at the natural hair. It’s not a life-threatening illness by any means, but it’s a sad result of hair manipulation

It shouldn't matter. This is what drives me nuts...especially in DV situations (obviously not this,) but it's NOT UP TO the victim or shouldn't be. If you commit a crime you shouldn't hope or have the chance to persuade or intimidate your victim into you not having to face consequences. He assaulted someone on national tv with the world watching. No, it shouldn't be up to Chris Rock, it's THE PEOPLE v. the defendant, not the victim v. defendant in a criminal case. For heaven sake they don't even need Chris nor any testimony, you can clearly see what was done...the end.

You're not wrong but it can be almost impossible to get a conviction without a complaining victim in most cases. The police know this and are hedging against the waste of time and money of prosecuting to no avail. Of course, it shouldn't work like that, but in all practical ways it does.

Yes, but isn't needed in this situation. What a fricken example...so disgusting.

Oh, well in this case there are plenty of witnesses and video of the incident, so sure, they could prosecute and likely win. Also though, a guy got slapped - do we really need all that?

Again, Will Smith was definitely in the wrong here - absolutely 100% no question about it. But I can also leave it to be between him and Chris Rock to settle it.

If the smack was real, I think it all boils down to the simple fact the Will loves Jada more than Jada loves Will. She will continue to flaunt her boyfriends in front of him, bring them into the home, make them part of the family. Her one true love was Tupac, Will and Jada have both said it. Will has just been trying to please her from day one and he's making himself look like a giant fool.

Will was absolutely wrong to do it, but, you know, sometimes with guys, they get in a fight and someone gets smacked. Then you buy him a drink and that's the end of it. It's certainly not an ideal way to handle a situation, but it's also not that big of a deal either, other than this being on a very public stage. It's between Chris Rock and Will Smith - that's good enough for me.

Then Will should have done what other men are supposed to do in that situation where they want to fight someone: they take it outside, in to the parking lot, out back of the building, etc.

Here is a scene in one of the Bridget Jones movies, where they made a parody of two, supposedly civilized men going outside and fighting each other.

The Academy vetted and had a rehearsal with the joke in it, with Will Smith in the audience. He already knew the joke was coming. He had not issue with it until the live broadcast.

Most likely, Chris didn't even write that joke. The Oscars has an army of comedy writers who write the jokes. Chris was likely just reading from the prompter. So yes, the joke was dumb and in bad taste but it's highly possible some other goofy comedian wrote it.
Interesting. I, too, wonder if we will find this all to be a hoax. I’m wondering why Will slapped him instead of punched him- isn’t punching a first instinct (as opposed to slapping), for men especially, if very mad? How many slaps do we hear about in the news? Chris had his hands behind his back. If Chris was really in the dark and thought Will was coming in for a handshake or a hug, wouldn’t he have maybe reached at least a hand out to Will in greeting up on the stage? There was a lot of touchy/freely/huggy going on between Will and Denzel, Bradley et al later on, for instance. Some things seem off about it. Regardless, if real, I wonder if there will be legal action somehow (ie lawsuit) since this was supposedly a sanctioned joke on the show of which Will was aware prior to its airing, etc. I can’t get past the look on Chris’s face just after he was hit. He did look pretty hurt. If that was acting, he did a great job. (But I tend to think it wasn’t.)

I think in the past this is true. But in the past few years we’re supposed to have all learned some sensitivity. Hopefully that’s the case for many of us. But I do think that given all the stress of the pandemic, and world events, and everyone’s individual stress, we have a society that’s on edge about everything, with lots of emotions like anger, sadness and all that, along with a tendency to lash out. No one is really immune. It’s just too bad Will couldn’t have controlled his emotions more given that this was such a spectacular event and also one of the greatest nights of his life. Have some restraint, man!

Absolutely agree - it was highly inapporporate to do it right there on stage. If the academy, or theater wants to take further action, then by all means. At the end of the day though, it just wasn't
the crime of the century. If Chris Rock doesn't want to make a big deal out of it, then neither do I.

1. The Oscars are not a Friar's Club roast and should stop letting hosts and presenters joke around with personal insults as if they are. A little decorum please.

2. Regina Hall groping the male actors over the "covid" tests was beyond cringe-worthy. There is NO WAY that would have flown if the host were a male and the same rules should apply to her.

3. Also did not like Regina Hall in the Tammy Faye makeup.

Does she have traction alopecia or alopecia areata (autoimmune condition)?

No one is talking about King Richard now, his producers will not be happy.
Unfortunately, I feel the opposite is probably true. We’ll see how the ratings do after last night. I didn’t even know about this movie before, myself.

He did not apologize. He excused it.

Agree. I cannot personally speak on domestic violence, but it sounded like a "Yeah, I know, I shouldn't have slapped you, but you had it coming with being disrespectful." No apology to Chris, which should have been his first apology. It was almost as if the speech made him out to be the victim. It is so bizarre and disappointing.

I was thinking afterwards why nobody stopped Will while he was stalking up to the stage. Where was security? Maybe it was all planned, but I just can't wrap my head around that. Why would Will embarrass himself like that willingly? If it was part of a bit, they would have hugged and laughed after. At least I think they would.

1. Hosts and comedians have been doing it for years at the award shows. I look at it as poking fun at all the extravagance and ridiculousness of the event. The over the top expense and formality of the entire evening while much of the country (and world) is suffering. The celebs are dressed to the nines eating caviar drinking champagne and going to parties. It's kind of like the comedians are on our side. I think the celebs have come to expect it and most just laugh it off. I personally love when a good comedian is hosting and can joke with the celebs. Not in a mean way, but just in a poking fun way.

2. So cringy. I was uncomfortable and felt the men on stage felt awkward. I don't know who came up with that idea, but it was awful.

3. that whole thing was not funny at all. Maybe a little when Amy came down as Spiderman.
