The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Chris is truly a class act. He apologized to Wanda Sykes after the incident. Here is what she said:

"I was like, 'Why are you apologizing?' He was like, 'It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina were doing such a great job. I'm so sorry this is now gonna be about this.'"
I already liked Chris, but my opinion of him after all this mess has soared through the roof.

Apparently, Will, Chris and Jada have a looong history. Will and Jada each worked at different times with Chris and they know each other. ET gives a chronology:

TMZ Live just added: that before the 2016 Oscars, Jada and other people were complaining that the Oscars weren't inclusive at at. It was nicknamed, the "Oscars So White," show. Jada & Will said openly said they were boycotting. Turns out, that Jada had spoken to Chris and asked him to give up hosting and join the boycott.

Chris was like, "What are you talking about? Me hosting is the embodiment of what we are all fighting for. A black person gets to HOST." (Plus Chris did make some jokes about it. He didn't pretend minorities weren't under-represented.)

Jada got mad at Chris for not joining her.

THEN Chris slams Jada onstage during his opening speech, saying why is she boycotting? She wasn't even invited. Ouch!

TMZ says that apparently caused a real rift between the couple and Chris. Especially for Jada as his remarks were aimed at her. That they can't stand each other.

Fast forward to Sunday's Oscars and Will is sitting there. Reports are he had even heard Chris' jokes during rehearsal. He even laughs during the show. But, it's after he looks at Jada's expression, probably remembering Chris went after her during the 2016 Oscars, that she may have felt humiliated back then, whatever, and Chris is doing it again, that he loses it.

TMZ surmises that basically Chris could have said anything about Jada and it would have set the Pinkett-Smiths off. That like when people say they are getting divorced because the spouse squeezes the toothpaste tube the wrong way, but that's not really it, there is way deeper stuff, this is the same.

It makes sense. (Not that it EXCUSES or JUSTIFIES Will hitting Chris. I certainly don't condone his assault.) We almost all feel Will's actions were way over the top and so inappropriate to a hair/bald/alopecia or GI Jane 2 comment.

Look at the words Will used twice: "Keep my wife's name out of your (bleeping) mouth." As in, "Don't you go after her again, about ANYTHING. You can't make a joke about her that would ever just be an innocent joke now."

IF this new theory is even remotely true, I wish Will had just stated it during his acceptance speech. We heard and saw he didn't apologize to Chris. That was glaring. If he had just said, "Sorry everyone, there is so much past history of hurt and pain between Chris, Jada and I, that I won't get into, and I just snapped. This was totally the wrong time for our stuff, that was a long time coming, to come to a head. HERE. Sorry to all of you. I wish I could also say I'm sorry to Chris right now, but we have so much other stuff to sort through first, and to do that in private. . ."

I would have had more respect for him and understanding. NOT that it was okay to hit Chris. First, that he had stopped trying to come off as her perfect savior and that they are perfect. Or that they even have anything positive with Chris. Who doesn't come from some dysfunctional family, relationships, or broken friendships? (I do. :wave2: ) Who hasn't been at or seen an occasion that was supposed to be wonderfully celebratory, but instead, two people just go after each other, verbally if not physically, and just ruin it for everyone there, because they couldn't keep to separate sides of the room? It doesn't make it okay. Those people are still responsible for ruining everyone else's time.

Yet, we all knew there was something "off" about the Pinkett-Smiths saying it's about her bald head and he was protecting her. And how Will just flipped in an instant off-camera, without seeming provocation. It didn't pass the smell test for many of us. That would have saved us three days of, "What the heck??? What the HECK???"

(Though still trying to figure out the standing ovation??? WTH???)

Okay, comments, debate, holes in the TMZ theory?

Russell Brand has his own hair issues. :lmao: He always looks to me, like he needs to go wash it. So, maybe he's not one to be talking about whether Jada should think her hair issue is important or not.

And I don't think he's ever been invited to the Oscars or a Hollywood red carpet. I do think his ex-wife, Katy Perry, the year after their divorce, was on either the Emmys, Grammys or Oscars. So, him saying he thinks there shouldn't be award shows could be from that.

That being said, I DO agree with him that they are frivolous and over the top in excess. I agree with @Tink-osophy when she said:

There have been posts where some fellow DISers don't understand why we have award show threads and would watch together. For the majority of us, it IS for the fluff, frivolity of seeing the dresses and maybe getting a couple new shows and movies to watch later. Or to root for movies we did see and loved, and want other people to see them too. There are groups of people who do take them more seriously. Yet, the majority of us here don't really take the shows that seriously. And we certainly don't want a political lecture during the show. :headache: :badpc: The fun for us is watching the fluff TOGETHER and chatting about it. It IS entertainment.

. . . At least until the slap.
Hilarious that in this thread, (and I love your point of view usually), but in this thread about making fun of appearance and the repercussions thereof, you made fun of his appearance. And yes, he was invited to present at the Oscars (and he did it… brought his Mom.) He’s got quite a long list of credits himself and he knows the players and the game.

Hey! You aren't supposed to point that out. LOL But, point taken. <insert laughing smiley - Do you guys know our smileys don't work since the upgrade?!>

We still haven't heard directly from Jada about how SHE feels about ANY of this. Her silence is notable. (Her vague post aside, because it didn't directly speak to anything of substance)

I'd like to hear from her in all this. For all we know, she wasn't even offended. An eye roll is typically a reaction to a lame/bad joke rather than any deep offense or hurt. She is letting Will take the fall here and that says a lot.

Ditto!

OMG! Breaking news:

The Academy said Will Smith had broken the Academy's code of conduct and they had actually asked him to leave the building, but he refused to leave the awards.

I still don't get the standing ovation???

They just reported on our news that the Academy asked him to leave the premises after the incident and he refused.

That makes me think he’s even more despicable.

We were posting at the same time. :)

It also makes me wonder, if the Board of Governors are taking their time with what to do, and having to make sure whatever they decide passes legal requirements, because I suspect Will Smith will sue them, if they don't dot all their "i"s and cross their "t"s on this.

This hot mess. Do you believe it? Not sure I do. They allowed him to accept the award.

Per Whoopi Goldberg:

"The reason they didn't go and take him out is because that would have been another 15, 20 minute explanation of why we're taking the Black man out five seconds before they're about to decide whether he's won an Oscar or not.

"So that's, and I'm going to say I believe [Oscars producer] Will Packer made the right decision. He said, let's get through the rest of this so we can deal with it wholeheartedly. So that's what went on.”

Yeah, I wonder if this is a CYA statement on the Academy's part now that they know so many people, including one of the hosts says they were disgusted that Will got to stay.

Although, Whoopi does say it would have taken 15-20 minutes of getting him out and explaining it all. :scratchin Maybe, she meant, Will refused and would have sat in his seat for those 15-20 minutes, yelling out how they are trying to remove a black man from the building, instead of just getting up and leaving? How long does it take to escort someone out? Unless he was totally unwilling to leave?

I think even if Kanye is asked to leave the Grammys, he'd get up, yelling all the way out. But, he'd go.

Will Smith sounds more like an egotistical *** all the time. :badpc:

Not aiming this at you, just using the report you quoted. Who cares if there is bad blood between them? Jada has no business being pissed that Chris made the decision that was right for him in 2016. Maybe the joke back then was a low blow, but she wasn’t quiet about commenting on those not falling in line with her, so I think his joke was fair game.

Learning more about what happened at this one, I don’t understand anybody defending Will. If he can’t be an adult about uncomfortable situations, he shouldn’t attend.

Almost 45 minutes from incident to award. I didn’t realize it was that long. That’s more than enough time to have him removed before accepting the award.

“The apparent paralysis was further exacerbated by the odds-on favored nominee having a near full 45-minutes to sit there before his win in the Best Actor category was unveiled”

In light of the most recent news, that the Academy asked Will to leave, I especially would like to hear from Jada. As a PP mentioned, we are missing those crucial couple of seconds from when Will was laughing, (or even faux laughing,) and Jada rolled her eyes, to when Will got up to slap Chris.

Also missing is her reaction to seeing it. And when she sat there and heard Will yelling at Chris about her.

When (IF) Will was asked to leave and he wouldn't do it, how did she feel then? She had to know he imploded his career?
