The Official DIS Golden Globes LIVE PARTY Thread!!!

Why did Barbra get a standing o?

Because as she brought up, she's the only female director to have won. Also, she's the only person ever to receive all of the following: Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe, Cable Ace, National Endowment for the Arts, and Peabody awards, as well as the American Film Institutes Lifetime Achievement honor and the Film Society of Lincoln Center Chaplin Award.

See this is where I think absolutely everything has gone down hill from, this expectation that celebrities and athletes etc are some kind of Gods that should be worshipped by people. The pedestals they put each other on is bad enough but at this point they should really know better, they are there for entertainment not to be some sort of moral compass and true voice of victims.. Reese even said it, we will tell your stories, yeah for a price and profit.
Movies are not just for entertainment. They inspire and teach us about the lives of others. They help us understand about the capacity of humans. The arts play an important role, at least they have in my life. Why should someone give up their voice because they happen to work in the arts. Their opinions are just as valid as mine, or yours.

I understand and can appreciate that but it is the explosion of "celebrity" and adoration that is somewhat hypocritical. Like I said earlier Tanya Harding is now a sympathetic character? Everyone can claim challenges and difficulties in life, it does not mean that how ever many years later that life story like hers should be celebrated but oh yeah this is Hollyweird, they have a very unusual sense of morals and as for Barbra suddenly being so inspired by no other woman having the same accolades given to her, why doesn't she put her money where her mouth is then, or Meryl or Oprah, the list goes on and on.

I like it when anyone talks about their beliefs if they keep it short when on a program and they aren't rude. Those who do so here get a little more time. ;)

Nice thread Imzadi. Well done as always.

 Love this. :thumbsup2

Wow! I didn't realize that - thanks for answering!

How do you know Barbra hasn't? She is supposed to be extremely camera shy so her just being there was surprising.

Exactly.

She is freaking Barbra Streisand and that is all that is needed for a standing ovation.

Yes, I am a huge fan of her amazing voice and talent.

It was an honest question on my part. I had no idea she had directed anything or won all of those awards. Wasn't trying to offend anyone.

The films she is in she produces and also directs herself, except the Fockers but I doubt any of those were ever in serious contention for awards.

They have and they do. Oprah started her school for girls in Africa because she believes that when one empowers the next generation of women, then real social change is possible, as these girls will grow up to raise the next generation of men & women after that.

Meryl Streep lives near us in CT, and I read now & then how she does smaller local causes. And she does support some political causes, which will remain nameless on this thread.

Barbra Streisand closed down one of her houses in CA a couple years ago and sold all the artwork & furnishings so she could donate the money to some charities. And she also supports certain political causes, LOUDLY, and with her proceeds from singing at concerts to raise money for them.

I went to the IMDb.com to see how many times she's been nominated for a GG and they had listed this on her bio. I didn't know all of that either. :)

I know the name Barbara Streisand but to be honest I can't think of any song or movie or anything she has done.
I get her songs confused with Carly Simon, and any movie I think she is done turns out I'm thinking of Bette Midler.

Oh I am very familiar with their charitable sides, they are highlighted in many media outlets and interviews etc. what I was referencing was the lack of female directors being up for and winning awards being a shock to Babs, maybe they should consider backing film projects that hire women for the purpose of having equal opportunity to receive these awards.
