*** The Official 2014 - DLR -July Thread ***(We All Have Been There & Back Home)

I'm not sure what shoes I will wear at this point. I had just broken in a new pair of Birkenstocks right before I fell :( I had planned on switching off between those and some old comfy sneakers. Now it will depend on whether I am in a boot or not. None of my shoes are an even height with the boot, except maybe some wedges. I used to only go to the parks two days in a row max and would wear Old Navy flip flops, wedges, or random tennis shoes. I wanted to make sure I was extra comfortable this trip since we were spending five days in the parks.

Side note: I was able to get an earlier appointment with physio, so instead of Monday I go Friday. I have put a little weight on my ankle in the boot. Hopefully they can help me start walking. I am a bit scared even though I don't have any pain anymore.

I have flat feet and I mean very flat.. I bought a pair of 2.00 Old Navy Flip Flops and I thought I went to heaven..

My feet did not hurt at all last year..

My sister said the same thing about her cheapy rubber flip flops last year at WDW. It's so interesting that everyone has different needs for foot comfort. It really is all about finding what's best for you personally.

I will say, if you have actual chronic foot problems I highly recommend seeking the opinion of a Orthapedic doctor that specializes in foot/ankle (not a podiatrist). The ortho doc can refer you to a local prosthetist (person who makes/fits prosthetic limbs, shoe inserts etc.) to have "real" custom orthotics made. Even with insurance mine were expensive, but well worth the money. It was the first time in two years I walked with no pain in my foot (although even after a while my pain returns). I've been back 3 times to see the guy who made my orthotics to get them just right, and he said he will work with me as many times as necessary to get them just right. Most podiatrists who prescribe "custom orthotics" merely send off your foot imprint to a far away company where they are made by someone who never sees you (which is what mine did and they were worthless).

I have nothing against podiatrists per se, I think they can be good for some things. However, as an attorney and someone who let a podiatrist perform surgery, I learned the hard way that there are big differences between the legal standard of care for ortho docs and podiatrists. Podiatrists often perform surgeries that ortho docs advise against. I would NEVER let a podiatrist operate on me or a family member again.

Djmeredith, love the Mickey tie dye shirts! So cute.

Thanks! I've found some other variations of the Mickey tie dye that I'm going to try this year.

The are so easy to do! I made them for my family a few years ago. Click here is a link to the thread on how to.

Here is a family picture of us in our tie dye shirts at the airport in 2011.

Very cute! I agree with you that the actual dye process is fairly easy. However, using the Dharma brand professional dyes and doing a large number of shirts (16 altogether) was quite a process. I already purchsed the supplies to make some for this year, but have been putting it off because it was such a pain. Guess I'll have to go ahead and tackle that project soon if I'm going to do it.

1. Where are you and your family traveling from? New Braunfels, TX, near San Antonio. 2. How long will your trip to Disneyland Resort take? 3 hours via Southwest Airlines, plus however long it takes to get from LAX to the Anaheim Hilton. 3. Is this your first trip to Disneyland Resort? No. Last trip was 2003. WDW is our "home" resort. 4. Who are you traveling/vacationing with this time? My wife Rhonda and our 7 yo granddaughter. 5. Are you and your family celebrating a special occasion? Not really, although our 33rd wedding anniversary is the day before our vacation begins.

Howdy, neighbor!!!!
I love New Braunfels; so pretty! Last time we were there was for a museum conference in August 2012. It's when I discovered I was pregnant.
I went to Texas Lutheran College back in the day :)

WOW there were a lot of post for me to catch up on since yesterday morning!!! LOVE the tie dyed shirts, If I didn't already have our shirts made I would ATTEMPT to make them!! I seen some people talking about traffic is less on sat and sun that makes me happy because we are doing our LA day on Sat :) I am still trying to decide about shoes, my flip flops seem to hurt my feet these days more so I doubt very seriously I can wear them all day I don't have a clue what I am taking for shoes but I do plan on trying to change them during the day. I have been TRYING to make my last dining reservation this AM for Goofy's Kitchen on Aug 3rd but the site doesn't want to cooperate...hopefully it will be working again soon.

Thanks, Crystal! I really appreciate the suggestion on the dakine bags. I will check those out for sure! :thumbsup2

Hi! No problem. Wanted to say that Zappos has them too =) :thumbsup2

And thanks everyone for your shoe suggestions! I have orthaheel flip flops and I love them, I just don't think I can wear them all day at the parks. I think I'm going to look into some inserts! Thank you. :goodvibes

I think I finally figured out our daily plan. I am still debating adding the Fantasmic dessert package, though. Here's what I have now:

Wednesday (7/9) - arrive on Amtrak at 7:00 am, leave luggage at hotel and head to California Adventure
Thursday (7/10) - use Magic Morning at Disneyland, see Fantasmic
Friday (7/11) - Disneyland, Discover the Magic Tour
Saturday (7/12) - LA/Hollywood and Beaches experience booked through Disney Travel, spend the evening in Downtown Disney
Sunday (7/13) - California Adventure, see World of Color
Monday (7/14) - last park day, hit highlights from both parks, see Fantasmic again
Tuesday (7/15) - head to airport for flight home

We always hit the parks at opening and hope to get lots done in those morning hours. Of course, once we get there who knows what may change!

I see I missed out on the whole shoe debate :upsidedow We just keep alternating a whole variety of shoes, this works best for us.

We have the tie-dye shirts also and I am slowly getting around dd14 as these will be our only matching shirts this year :rotfl:

These are from our trip to WDW last summer. We went during Star Wars Weekends.

I know what you mean. My 11 year old nephew says he's not wearing any matching shirts. We'll see about that! ;)

So it seems like matching tshirts is really a big thing. I had no idea. I don't remember seeing it on my last trip 4 years ago but maybe I was just oblivious (travelling to the US and Europe from down under with a 2 year old and a 4 year old made me kind of spacey ;) ). I don't think I would ever get my husband into a matching tshirt :rotfl: Looking forward to seeing photos of you guys in your family shirts. Such a cute idea.

I'm lovin' the tie-dye shirts!!!! I'd love to make some (with Dharma Trading Co. dyes and 100% cotton shirts---best looking, most vibrant shirts I've ever dyed), but I'm afraid it would be tough to sell my DD15 (and a half---that half is important when it puts you that much closer to a driver's license) and DN13-and-wanting-to-be-too-cool-like-older-cousin on wearing them. In public. Matching. With grandma. I should probably save my time and money.... However, my DD13 and I will be wearing our coordinating "All the Ladies Love Leo" shirts (any Percy Jackson book series fans out there??) that I had made for her birthday present. Her's is orange with purple and mine is purple with orange.

Our last trip (aka our first trip) I wore Teva sandals every day except the last. I would have worn them that day too, but pretty sure I broke my toe the night before (we were walking, Auds slowed down, I didn't, ouch). So I wore Converse tennis shoes (only non-sandals I brought) to keep my toes from moving too much. I'll probably alternate between Teva sandals and Nike tennis shoes throughout the day since we'll likely take breaks (no breaks last trip). The other thing I did last time was after we got back to the hotel, everyone would wash their feet, then I used peppermint lotion to massage them. Yeah. I was that nice. :goodvibes

I've realized I'm way behind on trip planning! I'm a school secretary and this time of year is crazy---especially when it's only my second full year!! So instead of zoning out and playing Candy Crush and The Room on my iPad, tonight I want to:
decide if I want Photopass+ and purchase if I do
schedule a limo from the airport for all 8 of us
peruse ordering options for grocery delivery
try and figure out what we're doing on "going home day" (no park, flying out of Long Beach around 7pm)

Help!!!

It's become really popular at WDW, but I recently read on here that it's not so common at DLR. Probably has a lot to do with the local crowd aspect of DLR. It's more of a special vacation type thing I think.

This is slightly off topic, so sorry about that, but I have no idea where to post this! It's something that I found cool anyway.

ASOS teamed up with Disney to design exclusive Minnie ears, and they have 7 styles on their website here.

Exciting for me, since I collect Minnie ears :D

WOW!!! Great Deal... We love KLM... We go back home on KLM all the time... Disney cruise Line has discontinued Cruises out of Galveston so it might be a while before we can plan one.. :(

HollyL posted on the SW thread that DCL will be in Galveston for Thanksgiving and Christmas cruises in 2015. :)
I can't make those dates, but am hoping it'll come back for more future dates!

:scratchin --- Thanks for the information...I may be like you... My Boss would not even let me go on vacation during spring break, let alone Thanksgiving or Christmas..

We can only take vacation during June, July, August and half of September.. We have 18 people in 3 offices... 2 people have 4 weeks, 9 of them have 3 weeks a year... 7 has 2 weeks.. If you ask me.. not enough week during the 3 and a half months for everyone to take vacations...

He makes us cash our unused vacation time left... Some of us need the extra vacations...

My Boss can be very challenging at times....I have 28 years with him...

My family and I are taking our first DL trip in July (26 - 08/02)! We'll be at the Disneyland Hotel.

7/30 - Free day: Regan Library, Santa Monica pier/beach

We still are considering the Steakhouse 55 breakfast on our departure day. Has anyone done this?

I wanted to add my thoughts on the shoes discussion. I've always heard that you should alternate the shoes you wear each day. Walking all day on them compresses the cushioning down and they aren't as good the second day. Give them a breather on day two and allow them to decompress.

I currently alternate between Brooks Glycerins and New Balance Fresh Foam. Both pairs are like walking on tiny feet pillows.
