The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Coach - I hope that your injuries aren't anything too significant and that you are all better soon.

I only had 3 runs last week. A 4 miler early in the week. I 3 miler in what started as sprinkling rain, ended as torrential downpouring rain mid-week. And my 10.5 miler in the weekend. (10.5/1:34:01/8:57 min/mile. BLEH) We've hit chillier weather in PA. It was my first cool run. I did NOT love running in the cold. Can I just say that I'm super-happy that the W&D is in 19 days and I can hit the Turbofire workout system again in the comfort of my climate-controlled home? :rolleyes1

I don't honestly know where my running legs will take me beyond this race. This is a bucket-list item for me (running Disney). While I've found that I'm enjoying this running gig, I'm getting awfully busy with life. Long runs are TOUGH to squeeze in some days. Not having a treadmill also puts me at a disadvantage when the weather doesn't cooperate - like last week when I did not need to hydrate, only open my mouth while running.

Seriously though...8-9 mile long-run up for this weekend. 6 or so up for next.
That is all the long runs left.
OMG.
UN-REAL.

We got this!

I was showing DD and DH the Osbourne Lights videos on You-Tube over the weekend. I put the Christmas Eve in Sarejevo song on my Running Playlist.
:santa:

Happy Running W&D peeps!

PS - Figment -- you ready for the SNOW predicted this week. UGH? :sad2:

I hear you! This is bucket list item for me as well :) I can't wait to go back to heated yoga in a couple of weeks. My legs are tired, my body is tired and my mind is tired. I'm also NOT a cold weather runner, I prefer the heat and it is starting to get really chilly here in western NY. I joined a gym over the weekend so I can use treadmill for the remaking weeks. I've never run on a treadmill before, so I hope I don't break any body parts or chip a tooth.
I might run again in the spring, but if I do it will be for fun, not training. Maybe the ToT 10 miler is more my speed, lol.
Good luck to all! Speedy recovery to the Coach!!

Melinda

I think it's just the guy's beard. OH you meant a little further down...

Looking at it again I am guessing it was photoshopped on because there wasn't a release from that one runner. I don't know, I've seen some people wear some really crazy things and run but I just can't imagine running like that.

Yes, sort of ready for it.... I don't mind the changing seasons actually and I really dislike hot humid weather, so fall running is much more my style. But I do not run in ice or snow covered roads/ground or torrential downpours thanks to my trusty treadmill that has now been fixed! I don't know exactly what I was thinking when I signed up for the Tinker bell half and glass slipper challenge but I know it wasn't "oh yay! Can't wait to run for 2 hours on a treadmill or up and down slick snowy hills during the holiday season." oops. Anyway, last year before and after w&d I said I was done with long races because of the time it took away from other exercise and also because of the weather-stress (haha). But howdy - look where I ended up this year.... so never say never. :lmao:

My post-February race plans are to run only 'local races' in 2014 and 2015. Hopefully the Pittsburgh half in 2015, and the Buffalo turkey trot (with my extended in-law family). I wanted to run the Pittsburgh half in 2014, but I think I will be far too burnt out by then. We need to put some money into some house stuff, and DH would like to actually take a long weekend trip somewhere other than disney so.... We'll see.... I do really love the W&D race - it's such a fun atmosphere.

Grab your hankies! 30 amazing photos from the finish line of the Twin Cities Marathon. That's us in 3 weeks!!!

Wow, tears flowing on that one! Thanks for posting. I have to say, even though there's so many good ones, that I have to give the most  to the BOSTON STRONG one. :cool1:

:grouphug: :grouphug: and more :grouphug: to all our injured runners! I'm probably jinxing myself, but I'm just waiting for the inevitable cold that seems to hit me right about now. :scared1: The legs are sore but doing okay and even though I partied like a rock star on Saturday :dance3:, I still managed to go out Sunday morning and get a decent 8 miles in, even though I had a major case of lead legs. The best advice I can offer, and I've even starting taking it myself :lmao:, is if your body says it's tired, LISTEN! :thumbsup2 Don't sweat mileage, pace, whatever!...You're running in DISNEY!!!...and that's all that matters. pixiedust:

Now, as far as making fun plans, we did the DIS photo last year on the runner's side of the field at WWoS, but it was incredibly loud and hard to talk. What does everyone think of maybe a meetup on Friday afternoon/early evening somewhere, and then a photo op at the start? :confused3 At least then we can actually get to know each other a little better without having to shout. :woohoo:

Coach- Here's another one for your opinion...I recently read, and I believe it was one of my Galloway emails, that an ice bath after running isn't necessary, that just using cool water will do the trick. I understand the thinking behind it, but was curious as to what you think. :confused3

This is my first Disney race and I can't wait! Not nearly as prepared as I would like to be but still looking forward to it.

For anyone who has done this race in the past - do people usually wear their headphones or is music provided throughout the course?

Thanks so much for the help!

I ran the race last year and did use headphones/music. There is some on course entertainment, but there were some long stretches with nothing. I was glad to have it. I had it turned up as loud as it would go to hear it. Be sure you have a fully charged battery!!

This year, I've been using a Garmin for my intervals. I'm a little worried about being able to hear it!! May have to rethink...

The theory is that cool applied to the legs will stop the small micro bleeds and reduce post run inflammation.

Studies show that there is little difference between cool water and icing. With that in mind, a cool bath would have similar therapeutic benefits as an ice bath.

Additional studies how that neither really are all that effective and that one should simply have a recovery drink and do a proper warm down post run. That would include a 15-20 minute walk post half marathon and a 30-40 minute walk post marathon.

Personally, I subscribe to the latter. I will have a recovery drink, walk and stretch out well post run. I developed my personal practices during a biking event where we rode 100+ mile days for 8 straight days. It taught a lot about recovery and how to refuel between long and hard days. I reserve ice for injured joints, use heat for muscle injury and just push through muscle soreness..

I high percentage of runners will run with iPods, etc. For your safety and more importantly mine, please do not turn the volume on high. You really need to hear audio warnings on course and from those who may be attempting to pass or otherwise help avoid a collision.

I do wear my headphones during races but tend to only wear one earphone. Sometimes when the course clears out and I'm wide open, I'll put in the other.

Ok I'm crazy but I am definitely running the Houston half Sunday as my last long run. The goal is to run at long slow run pace and not race pace. I'm going to start at the back and take my time. I am not going to get caught up in racing.

This. I also use my headphones to hear intervals and splits.

In regards to running with music, I always start my RunKeeper app at the beginning of a race and have music cued to that. However, I keep the volume low and sometimes run with my headphones only in one ear. There are lots of runner/walkers and you need to be able to pay attention to their cues as not all move to the side or signal walk intervals. What I prefer is actually to strike up a conversation with someone I am running near if we end up hanging together for a bit. It is a fun distraction and also a great way for me to gauge whether or not I am pushing myself too hard in the early miles of the race (whether or not I can hold a casual conversation during the run.)

I've been battling Achilles issues since about April and ran a half yesterday, dreading the pain I knew was coming after I finished the run (never hurts during a run, only after). I ended up walking about 1.5 miles to my car after the race and I had NO pain yesterday OR today. I think it was a combo of wearing compression socks and that long walk. I'm going to start walking a bit after every run now, in addition to my stretching and foam rolling.

Anyone ever have pain in their calves likely from running? I started noticing a light pain on Sunday. Growing in intensity on Monday. I did run thinking they just needed a good stretching, but the pain almost went into the bottom of the feet,

I was going to do a slow 4-5 today, but nixed that plan for rest instead. :(.

Coach, what are your thoughts?
I could tell you what my running week was like last week if that helps.
