The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Coach Charles - I'm sorry to hear that your knee is still giving you trouble. I hope that after some rest & a visit to the specialist that you'll be back in business soon!

I am still having knee pain myself(behind my knee actually). I didn't do my long run and I avoided my gym classes/running since Thursday. It seems a little better today. I plan to rest at least until Monday(maybe even Tuesday). I do need some advice though. I am "supposed" to do two more long runs (missed the 12.5m due to knee pain and supposed to do 14m next Sat). Could I do a long run this Monday and then another on Saturday? How close to race day can I do a long run before I taper my runs? My longest run so far was 11 miles...should I try for both the 12.5 and 14, or do one last long run to try to avoid further injuring my knee? (Dh insisted I try a brace, so we bought one at Dick's last night and it seems to be helping.)

Hope all is going well with everyone else! No more knee pain/injuries! ;)

Hi everyone,

Wow, 3 weeks tonight - how did that happen so quickly?!

Coach, sending you healing :grouphug: I hope the specialist will be able to sort out everything so you are able to enjoy the W&D pain free!

Quick question about the buses to WWoS... I know the final race instructions say we need to be on a bus no later than 8:00, but does that mean there aren't any buses after 8:00? I won't wait until the last minute, of course, but I also don't want to be spending too many hours waiting for the race to start!

Happy training - almost there!! :cool1:

I would not press through this weekend unless you are not having any pain. WIth regard to schedule. I would shoot for a 9-12 miler one of the following two weekends. I find that for a half, no real taper is required. It is helpful is injured, but not 100% necessary.

First, welcome to Disney, the inventor of the queue, show, queue, ride. I highly suggest catching a 7:30ish bus to avoid the last minute crush of folks. The wait in the staging area is not all that bad. I find that most folks who have transportation issues are the ones waiting for the last bus. Though, in answer to your question, yes, more than likely there will be a few buses later than 8:00. However, saying that, if one shows up at 8:01 and Mears has cleared the resort as complete, you really have little recourse.

ALL

Thanks for the well wishes. Its been 9 or 10 years since I had an injury that was really debilitating with regard to training. I have a newly rediscovered empathy for those suffering with knee pain.

Post race, is there a place to do some stretching? I guess I could plop on a piece of lawn but my chiro has me doing some specific things that I might like the room for.

Any post-recovery spots that might offer resistance bands for use? I plan on bringing my own for the hotel room......

In the column do what Coach says, not what he does....

I needed a mental boost so I drove over the BW for a run. What a beautiful late summer early fall morning. I hopped out of the car, walked for about 5 minutes the took off on a slow jog from the parking lot behind the guard shack towards Crescent Lake. I made about 3-4 minutes and the knee started saying no. I tried varying pace and stride all the way around to the bakery and called no joy.

I have an ortho appointment for the week after next with the head of Celebration Health's orthopedic group (or the head knee guy) - I would have settled for the new guy out of med school if I could have found something earlier. I am not used to the long lead times for a specialist - in Houston, I would have been seen in 3-4 days.

So I have my ice bag and am waiting for football this afternoon. I have a good idea of what is wrong and am hopeful that an informed patient can help direct treatment so I can get back on the road quickly.

I completely understand the frustration of waiting for doctors and in my case last year, MRIs. It's THE WORST! Hang in there as best you can.

Just completed 5 miles and feel good about being able to do 13 but sure am glad we still have 3 weeks ish so I can work on pace a little bit.

Is anyone else staying at AKL and want to carpool to a host resort on race night? Otherwise I plan to take a bus to epcot and walk to boardwalk. :-)

Carey, just FYI, there will be shuttles from Epcot to the race start so there is no reason to walk to the BW to catch a bus. We are staying at AKL too and we are planning on heading to Epcot around 5 on race night. We are eating dinner in the room but we will leave earlier if we change our dinner plans.

SHHHHH, head to the pool on race day and leave with a towel. Pack that in your checked bag. The finish area is in Epcot parking. The fenced off area should have a spot that you could find for stretching. If not in the fence, maybe just outside the fence.

With regards to bands, not at the finish line area. A few of the gyms on property have some, but not all.

Best plan is to take the bus from AKL to Epcot for the start. Post race, there may be a cab shortage in the Epcot parking lot. Walking to BW or Beach would be the solution to a ride home if that were the case.

I see that injury bug has hit some of us. I have also been battling an injury, shin splints. Had them in both legs a month or so ago, rested and felt good. Started running again low mileage and back came te pain in one leg.
Completely on rest from running mode at this point. Lots of swimming and some biking to keep the cardio where it needs to be.
A little concerned about not running and not getting any mileage. But it is a Disney run so there was not going to be any PRs set. Will probably need to use the run-walk method.

Being down and not running is tough, but one thing I have learned is as we add more years on we need more rest time for an injury.

Keep on training.

Add me to the injured and can't run list too :( Thought it was plantar fasciitis but now I'm questioning that, and both my feet are hurting. Oye vey,I'm getting worried. Did 10 last weekend, but I think that was the stupidest thing I could have done.

Ankle is still giving me a fair amount of trouble. I'm not concerned about finishing but I do think I am going to be sore the week after the race walking around Disney and I am also really concerned about keeping up training for Princess in February. After that, I am retiring from half-marathons. I am going to stick with 5k and 10k distances and work on speed. I want to break 1 hour in the 10k in 2014.

Did a 10k fun run yesterday. Definitely not my best time but it was a tough-ish course, all rolling hills on a dirt trail and the ankle pain is definitely slowing me down a bit this month. Anyway, I kept waiting for some flat spots to get a handle on a steady pace but there weren't any. Despite my time, it was a valuable experience because I learned that I am far too conservative while running downhill. I ended up in a pocket of half a dozen people and when we would go uphill, I would power past them but then they would get ahead of me on the downhill portions. Official time was 1:06:05 and I won a $10 restaurant gift certificate in the raffle so I'm glad I went out and enjoyed some beautiful trails and foliage.

Oh no! Sorry to hear so many are hurting or injured. I finally went out and did my planned 6 miler today and it actually went much better than expected. I hadn't run since my stupid run on Wednesday and I think those 3 days off were exactly what my knee and i needed. Well, that and my new shoes and some time on a flat surface (finally got to the track today). I pretty much broke all the "rules" going in tho- horrible dinner last night, with margaritas- plus new shoes, plus new hydration, plus my iPod ran out of battery so I ran with my phone which didn't have all my usual songs on it, plus I ran at my old high school where I have nothing but bad running memories.

It felt like I turned a corner today tho- I finished the run feeling strong (still doubting of course that ill be ready to run 13 miles in less than 3 weeks but that was not what today's run was for).

So for anyone battling injuries right now, I'm sending Disney pixie dust your way and wishing you speedy recoveries and more importantly, an enjoyable experience. I'm not a coach, but my personal experience with injuries (I have had many) leads me to say, don't push yourself too hard too quickly if you are injured. Trust your training that has gotten you this far. Get back to basics- check your form, your stride length, your shoes, your non-running shoes and your post workout stretches and icing etc.

When I felt injured after my second to last planned run before wine and dine last year, my bil who is an athletic trainer said to skip my final short run all together. I was nervous going in to the race after almost 5 days off running but he was right. The shin pain went away and I had a good time at the race. But boy was it hard to not run. Better slightly undertrained than overtrained and injured.

Hey fellow AKLers, DEA and I are are staying at AKV for the duration. We will not have a car and are planning at this point to get ourselves to Epcot for shuttles. We anticipate long cab lines after the party and will probably walk to the BW area to get a cab post-party. We may be meeting up with a Friend With Car to get to Epcot, but if not, we're game to join an Epcot bus group!

Even in their agony and joy, these people look awesome! I did not realize how much the personal accomplishment that we feel crossing a finish line actually shows. Thanks for posting! :thumbsup2
