Thanks for sharing! The Mile 11 advice is going to keep me in giggles all day and then some:
"Remember, you have breathed this hard before: You may not be able to hear the bells or the vuvuzelas anymore because your lungs are trying to explode from your mouth, but don't be alarmed."
Rather than the childbirth analogy, I sometimes say that training for a distance race is very similar to being pregnant. You're often tired, you wear strange clothes to "be comfortable" or put away your high heels to protect your knees, you can't eat certain foods or drink alcohol (at least right before a long run), and you sometimes feel sick all day!
Thanks Pluto! for the guide to running the half, it was a great read!!
I would offer two things....
First, fuel to the schedule you trained on. They author makes it seem like you should only fuel at mile 8. I think that obvious, but I have seen folks try to follow these articles to the tee.
The other thing that is not obvious to many runners is that in a night race you will tend to run faster than planned. It can kill your race if you take off too fast in the first mile. Check you pace often in the first mile at W&D to make sure you are not inadvertently speeding on the run.
They had bottles of Powerade at the WDW in Jan. Don't they have beer at W&D? That's way better anyway.![]()
Definitely bottled powerade - all flavors
Thanks for advice coach! Currently I only have one speed, slow. Slow at the beginning, middle and end, lol! I plan on bringing my own honey stingers, I chew 2 every 3 miles, inhaler every mile and water every 2 miles. It's almost too much math for me, haha!
I was thinking about coral placement, since this is the WINE and DINE half marathon, coral placement should be based on your eating and drinking abilities. If that were case, I sure wouldn't be in K coral!
As for my run last night, I only went because the coach said tothanks! The run was okay not great but okay. But today, my legs feel great! Not tired or sore at all.
Have a great week
Melinda
Being a former theater kid that no longer has the time for an amateur career on the stage, I compare running to theater.
You have training runs, which are rehearsals, each gaining in importance and intensity. Your race is your "show" and you must run the way you've "rehearsed".
Now, in my celebrated days on the stage, I never really had a lead but was always happy to make friends and have fun with my buddies in the chorus. Running is the same. I'll never be up front in the A corral and am happy to be in the back making friends and having fun in G corral.

I went on a run today. My thoughtl hill work. So my goal was to go up 4 of our towns hills .
Per map my run elevation gain was:
Mile 1 27 ft
Mile 2 60 ft
mile 3 30 ft
mile 4 57 ft
mile 5 114 ftthis one brought me to 1000 ft elevation. I bet on a sunny day there would be an awesome view of Mt Rainier from here.
That might tempt me to run up there again.
Parts of miles 1-4 are on my normal week day runs. depending how I choose to go. This was the first time I ever challenged myself to do them all in one run. Mile 5 was the first time I ever ran(well walked the steepest part) of that road.
So I am guessing I will be well prepared for what ever hills the W&D has.
********************
Since the only "hill" in these parts belong to Mt. Trashmore, I can honestly tell you the "inclines" aren't bad at all. I haven't run a "real" hill in 20 years and have no problems at all with the ramps at this race.
I have more of a problem trying to figure out which side of the road to run on as there are some pretty steep angles along the way.

I've seen your mountain!
Hardly something to be proud about but it is considered a south Florida landmark!
A lot of folks find the roadways at WDW to have a greater camber than they are used to. What I have found is that running along the lane stripes provides the flattest, non-cambered path on most roadways. You do have to keep an eye out for the nasty little reflectors that are on the same line but that is a small price to pay for losing some of the camber. The worst side slope on the W&D is the turn from Osceola onto World Dr; mile 7.5 ish. This small stretch has a side slope that slopes left and neither side of the road has a flat spot. Best to just push through the stretch and enjoy the downhill onto World.
Is that the left turn you take just before you hit the food/water station with the green Army guy? That was the WORST!I must have looked like a maniac running all over the place trying to find someplace that didn't kill my knee!
Otherwise, my DW is in Traditions today. Poor thing texted me once she got checked in and settled saying that she was already in the doghouse. Seems that her shoes have a small secondary color stripe that is a no no. She will be a costumed CM so we she will be shoe shopping this weekend

I'll second this, Disney is really a flat course. The W&D is probably the second flattest of the existing courses used on property. At best the elevation varies 30 - 40 feet and even then, ramped gently.

ORN: I ran a hill profile this morning on the TM. The hour long run was really the first hard run since the ToT

It's the orientation class all new cast members have to take![]()
Sorry I had to be away this afternoon.
I call it the Disney brainwashing class. Simply, I know of few cast members who do not think it the best day ever. I just got a text from Mary saying Mickey just handed her name tag to her.
A followup on this AM's run... Yikes, I need an ortho. I was getting out of the car in a sandy area this afternoon and torqued my knee. A pop, a bright light pain and now it looks like a rugby ball.
I am thinking the W&D may still be a once and done for me
