The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Thanks for sharing! The Mile 11 advice is going to keep me in giggles all day and then some: :rotfl:
"Remember, you have breathed this hard before: You may not be able to hear the bells or the vuvuzelas anymore because your lungs are trying to explode from your mouth, but don't be alarmed."

Think that was my fave too! :lmao: :rotfl2:

Rather than the childbirth analogy, I sometimes say that training for a distance race is very similar to being pregnant. You're often tired, you wear strange clothes to "be comfortable" or put away your high heels to protect your knees, you can't eat certain foods or drink alcohol (at least right before a long run), and you sometimes feel sick all day!

Okay, well, thanks for all the scary prego images in my head now...:rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: That's why I stick with these kinds of rugrats! :goodvibes

Thanks Pluto! for the guide to running the half, it was a great read!!
:thumbsup2

I would offer two things....

First, fuel to the schedule you trained on. They author makes it seem like you should only fuel at mile 8. I think that obvious, but I have seen folks try to follow these articles to the tee.

The other thing that is not obvious to many runners is that in a night race you will tend to run faster than planned. It can kill your race if you take off too fast in the first mile. Check you pace often in the first mile at W&D to make sure you are not inadvertently speeding on the run.

Great points as always Coach! :thumbsup2 I also am very guilty of letting that starting line adrenaline push me through the first mile WAY too fast. :crazy2: I don't think it really affected my last couple of miles more than an extremely painful IT band did. I couldn't get anything faster than a medium jog out of it from Spaceship Earth to the finish. :headache:

They had bottles of Powerade at the WDW in Jan. Don't they have beer at W&D? That's way better anyway. :drinking1

:lmao: :lmao::lmao:

Thanks for advice coach! Currently I only have one speed, slow. Slow at the beginning, middle and end, lol! I plan on bringing my own honey stingers, I chew 2 every 3 miles, inhaler every mile and water every 2 miles. It's almost too much math for me, haha!
I was thinking about coral placement, since this is the WINE and DINE half marathon, coral placement should be based on your eating and drinking abilities. If that were case, I sure wouldn't be in K coral! :)
As for my run last night, I only went because the coach said to ;) thanks! The run was okay not great but okay. But today, my legs feel great! Not tired or sore at all.

Have a great week
Melinda

Being a former theater kid that no longer has the time for an amateur career on the stage, I compare running to theater.

You have training runs, which are rehearsals, each gaining in importance and intensity. Your race is your "show" and you must run the way you've "rehearsed".

Now, in my celebrated days on the stage ;), I never really had a lead but was always happy to make friends and have fun with my buddies in the chorus. Running is the same. I'll never be up front in the A corral and am happy to be in the back making friends and having fun in G corral.:laughing:

Okay weirdest thing tonight. I got Xact Event Alerts email with my first 5K split from last year's Wine and Dine race?! Anyone else get that? So weird.

I went on a run today. My thoughtl hill work. So my goal was to go up 4 of our towns hills .
Per map my run elevation gain was:
Mile 1 27 ft
Mile 2 60 ft
mile 3 30 ft
mile 4 57 ft
mile 5 114 ft :eek:this one brought me to 1000 ft elevation. I bet on a sunny day there would be an awesome view of Mt Rainier from here. :love:That might tempt me to run up there again.
Parts of miles 1-4 are on my normal week day runs. depending how I choose to go. This was the first time I ever challenged myself to do them all in one run. Mile 5 was the first time I ever ran(well walked the steepest part) of that road.
So I am guessing I will be well prepared for what ever hills the W&D has.

Since the only "hill" in these parts belong to Mt. Trashmore :rolleyes1, I can honestly tell you the "inclines" aren't bad at all. I haven't run a "real" hill in 20 years and have no problems at all with the ramps at this race. :yay: I have more of a problem trying to figure out which side of the road to run on as there are some pretty steep angles along the way.:sad2:

I've seen your mountain!

I'll second this, Disney is really a flat course. The W&D is probably the second flattest of the existing courses used on property. At best the elevation varies 30 - 40 feet and even then, ramped gently.

A lot of folks find the roadways at WDW to have a greater camber than they are used to. What I have found is that running along the lane stripes provides the flattest, non-cambered path on most roadways. You do have to keep an eye out for the nasty little reflectors that are on the same line but that is a small price to pay for losing some of the camber. The worst side slope on the W&D is the turn from Osceola onto World Dr; mile 7.5 ish. This small stretch has a side slope that slopes left and neither side of the road has a flat spot. Best to just push through the stretch and enjoy the downhill onto World.

ORN: I ran a hill profile this morning on the TM. The hour long run was really the first hard run since the ToT

Otherwise, my DW is in Traditions today. Poor thing texted me once she got checked in and settled saying that she was already in the doghouse. Seems that her shoes have a small secondary color stripe that is a no no. She will be a costumed CM so we she will be shoe shopping this weekend

Hardly something to be proud about but it is considered a south Florida landmark! :lmao:

Is that the left turn you take just before you hit the food/water station with the green Army guy? That was the WORST!:headache: I must have looked like a maniac running all over the place trying to find someplace that didn't kill my knee!:crazy2:

Sorry if I misled anyone a few pages back about the "hill" by the Boardwalk. It's not really a "HILL" by any close definition of the term, and believe me - I run HILLS around here in Pittsburgh. W&D is a really flat flat course but for some reason that tiny teeny little grade up by Boardwalk really ticked me off last year. I was tired and I ended up walking just before the very top of it and that made me personally mad at myself. I think mostly it was that I was generally feeling like, ok, we just passed the LAST water stop (as the volunteers there will cheerfully tell you), and we're ALMOST to Epcot but 'Where is that bleepin 12-mile marker anyhow' and then the people walking around near the Boardwalk and Beach club kinda had looks on their faces like, "what are these people doing anyway?" (you would think it would be fairly obvious but still, there were some odd gawkers). For me, that was the 2nd worst endurance part of the race (the 1st being the very last 10th), and I really didn't expect that because you know, there's all kinds of stuff to look at! :lmao: Perhaps if I was a frequent visitor to the Beach Club I would have realized just how much frontage that resort has but I'm not so I didn't.

I'll second coach - the cambered roads STINK. I've learned from this board though and this time I'll try to avoid the edges. Unfortunate to hear that there's no way around it on that downramp. I really hated that part and was going to try to hit the top side of it but since that wont help, I'll just try my best to grin and bear it. The second worst banked part in my opinion was going into animal kingdom around mile 3.

It's the orientation class all new cast members have to take :)

:thumbsup2

Sorry I had to be away this afternoon.

I call it the Disney brainwashing class. Simply, I know of few cast members who do not think it the best day ever. I just got a text from Mary saying Mickey just handed her name tag to her.

A followup on this AM's run... Yikes, I need an ortho. I was getting out of the car in a sandy area this afternoon and torqued my knee. A pop, a bright light pain and now it looks like a rugby ball.

I am thinking the W&D may still be a once and done for me

Oh no! Poor Coach! Hope it resolves quickly.....

Coach, I don't wanna hear that! No knee issues!

Getting excited about the run, everyone! :) I am also feeling woefully unprepared, but darn it I am going to do it anyway.

As a side note, I don't do this really ever but my company is applying for a business grant and we need votes to help us be considered. I am a producer with a film studio - it is my families business - and we just expanded into a new space and its an exciting, scary time.

If anyone feels to inclined as to follow this link and vote for us, I would really really appreciate it. Thanks! :)

Oh no! Sorry to hear about your knee, Coach Charles! I hope it feels better soon.

Hi everyone, I have been lurking on this site for a few weeks now, just getting so excited with the time coming so fast. Just wanted to say HI and wish everyone a safe run. :cheer2:

Oh no, Coach! That's terrible news. Sending speedy healing vibes your way.

The camber of those roads is HORRID. I remember finishing up the WDW half on that last onramp where the army guy was and it was so damn slanted, I wanted to DIE. I was hoping W&D would skip that part.

Oh no! I hope it isn't as bad as it sounds.
