The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I have a small backpack that that folds into itself into a pack about 4"x6".

The reason I had asked is that I heard on a podcast that after Boston they're quite strict about putting other bags into the clear plastic bag check bags. Some people said they were forbidden, others said they had to be shown to be completely empty. I'm not sure if things are loosening up a little but I'm hoping someone will share their experience from the ToT this weekend.

Do most people change after they are some our wear their running clothes all night?

I think at a minimum I need another pair of shoes. My feet are always soaked after a long run. (So are my clothes but that is nowhere Near as annoying)

From the runDisney race instructions - modified since Boston...
Please consider not bringing a bag to check on race day. All items may be inspected. We suggest that you do not bring any unnecessary articles with you and please do not check cold or gel packs. If you must check a bag, you MUST use the clear bag provided to you at Packet Pick-Up. NO EXCEPTIONS. Once you finish, your race number will be used to verify your bag. Do not check any valuable items. The Event Staff is not responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen items. Do not leave any belongings unattended, and if you see something suspicious, please say something to race officials and security personnel.

So with a little knowledge of what security is looking for...

The small bag as described that folds into itself will probably go unnoticed, especially if packed neatly in between clothing. Thinking that an empty and flat backpack would also be of no harm in the eyes of the folks handling the clear bags, though, I would fold it over a couple times to help demonstrate it is empty. If you stuff on your stuff in the back pack or the backpack seems to have volume, then you are probably going to have a discussion and inspection.

If it were me, I would probably not have the backpack... If I had a spectator coming to the party, I would ask them to carry the empty pack into the party then place my race bag in it there.

If you are like me over a Goofy weekend, and bring your post race drink, your probability of search just went up due to the heavier than other bag weight.

For any bag post Boston, I am not sure that I would tie the strings off until in the hand up area. There you have passed security and are unlikely to have to reopen the bag.

Would it be possible to check bags into lockers at the front of the park and retrieve them after??

Most likely no. The after party is after normal park operations close for the day. Anything left in the lockers would be removed just after park closing.

I thought about leaving my bag with change of clothes with dh or in the car(in Epcot parking lot). Do you think this would be easier or should I just do bag check?

Also, what are your friends/family doing before the race? I read on rundisney that finish line party tickets include early entry to Epcot at 7pm. I figured that we would drive over to Epcot ~7ish and dh would go to Epcot and I would hop on the bus to WWoS. Can spectators come along to WWoS and hang out for a bit before the race and watch the start? (If we could hang together for awhile at WWoS, we'd prefer this option. But if I need to get in my corral shortly after arriving there, I don't see the point in having him wait around if he could be enjoying W&D at Epcot instead.)

The bag check has been run smoothly except for the first year so I would go that route. They will start making announcements to move to the corrals about an hour before the start. Much too early for me, unless you are wanting to be at the front of your corral to reduce the number of runners to get through if you are planning on passing many of them.

I do not know when they stop running buses out for the start area. Spectators will definitely not be able to stay until race start as they will close down roads before the race starts.

As long as you follow directions in the race program (posted above) I think bag check is still a good option. Note that the discussion above was focussed on how to pack a back pack. I want to let folks know that this morning, security was rather high - in a Disney way. The K 9 folks were out and about early. They were trying to sneak past the DJ when he queued up Who Let the Dogs Out, making it rather obvious that they were out sniffing the facilities. I am sure that a tour of the bag tent was on their course. During the race, they set up on a location as we came back from the woods - looking.

With regard to Spectators, They can come over to the WWoS for the start. The staging area is open to all and you load corrals close to the staging area. There is a rather small area to watch the start from but it is really not very good. It would be real easy to hand off your post race stuff to spectators in the staging area then meet up in Epcot once complete.

Thanks for the info an insight on packing drop bags. This will make the post-race party much more enjoyable!

Just a question. What kind if times are needed to move up in coral placement? I haven't checked my placement but I am pretty sure I will be in the last coral because I didn't have a proof of time. I am considering doing a local 10k but just wondered if it would be worth it. Thanks!

You can use the mcmillan running calculator online to come up w predicted finish times and then you can hope disney uses the same sort of predictor computation to move you up in corral. I know that for me, I estimated 2:45 finish based on my previous wine and dine half and that put me in H. Check the rundisney site or the link on this page a few pages back that will show you the break down of corrals with predicted finish times. I ran a 1:07:32 10k and mcmillan puts that around 2:30 and change. The way disney broke down corrals for this race i will hopefully get to move up to G when i bring my proof of time to the expo. Unfortunately for me, I needed to finish about a minute or so faster to move up to F because the corral jumps from =2:45 (h) <2:45 (g) <2:29 (f).

According to mcmillan, a 1:27ish 10k predicts a <3:15 finish (disney corral K), 1:20ish 10k predicts a <3:00 finish (corral J), a 1:15:48 10k is <2:50 (corral I), 1:14 10k works out to =2:45 (corral H), 1:13:47 10k is <2:45 (corral G), 1:06:37 10k is <2:29 (corral F), 1:00:06 10k is <2:15 (corral E), and so on.

Sorry I couldn't finish, I have to run! (Not literally. Lol)

Last year DH went right to the party and had a blast while I was out waiting and running all over the "world". I made some new friends and had fun. On the other hand, DH might come with me to the start this time. At a certain point, I'm sure I will want to move into my corral and the runners only area (after dancing a little!) and then he would take the bus back to Epcot. I'm sure that will take some extra time but I won't be reaching Epcot until at least 12:30 so he will have plenty of time to enjoy and still find a spot to hopefully see me. But I'm not sure if he is willing to give up all the "walk on" ride times he had last year. He said he walked right onto soarin and maelstrom and probably could have done mission space too but he dislikes that ride and was more interested in trying out the food and wine festival beers.

I do remember reading that they suspend all transportation between 9-10pm so if you have spectators come to wwos, they would either have to get on a bus before 9 or after 10.

So I ended up doing 7 miles this morning. I think should have waited for the cokd front tomorrow

I intentionally put my run off till tomorrow so it wouldn't be so miserable. All my friends in Dallas are already talking about how cold it is and it's almost 90 here. :(

I really hope the cold front cones through tonight. I about died at the pumpkin patch today. I'm ready for something close to fall.

Fall arrived here in KS! Beautiful 50 degree and sunny start for our local charity 5K. I had a PR thanks to Galloway's 30 second/15 second intervals but something's awry with my hip. Not sure and kinda nervous about that. :furious:

Too bad I can't use the results for corral placement. It would get me up 2 corrals!

I ran today, a long run. I had to take my miles slower - much slower than I like to/wanted to. But I suppose that is the purpose of the LONG SLOW run.
It was so hot and humid in PA.
11.56 miles in 1 hr 52 min. 9:42 min/mile average. I've been pacing more like 8:30-8:45 in my recent training. It was so humid. :( When I finished my run, I literally laid on the sidewalk. And I was shot for about 3 hours afterwards. It was not like me at all.

I hope that this isn't a sign for what is to come after the half. I've run 11 miles before and felt awesome. This was crap.
SIGH.
Hoping next week's full 13 is better.
Right?
I KNOW now that I didn't eat enough for breakfast. That might have had something to do with it.

Oh today was awful temperature-wise here in pa. I went out last night at 5:30 and basically melted from humidity. No evaporation whatsoever. It looked like i ran in the rain i was soaking wet. after just 4 miles! i would say that if wine and dine this year is anything like wine and dine last year, it will be better than what we experienced this weekend in western pa. This weather is so stupid. I'm supposed to do just 5 tomorrow sometime and I'm dreading it. Would do it inside but I need to get my treadmill fixed! Ack!!!!

Well, I turned my ankle in some gravel and fell last night. I suppose I'll spend the next week revamping my goals for the race and resting. It's nice to have this forum because I've followed some of you through some trouble.

Thanks for sharing! It really helps!

Keep an eye out for a limping Belle...
