The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I'm ready for these high 90's low 100's temps to go away.

I've been traveling all week with all sorts of travel related issues. I got a nice 3 mile run tonight. I have a 5k race Saturday. It starts at 9 so it will be hot and I'm guessing slow

I thought I would never say this but I would gladly trade you the heat for the rain right now. The flooding here is starting to freak me out.

Thank god I don't live in one of the low lying area of Denver is all I have to say. But its I really don't want to go anywhere this weekend.

I was really hoping the weather would clear up and let me have my first outdoor run since the Half. But the weather isn't cooperating. And it's probably going to be a couple of weeks before the trails around here are going to be safe enough to run on with all the wetness. Thank god the big half around here isn't until October is all I have to say for the race organizers.

I love mine too but it's time to retire it. While I love sweat wicking clothes, I ruin them really fast. After awhile, the smell just doesn't go away. :scared::scared:

Have you tried soaking themin plain white vinegar? Suppose to help with the smell.

I think I need goggles and fins if I am going to run outside today. Going to aim for a run tomorrow though even our paved trails are flooded out and covered with mud right now. Stay safe, Colorado runners!

I was wearing my RunDisney shirt so I felt extra special:cool2:.

I love my RunDisney "In Training" shirt!

My fave is the "Every Mile is Magic" shirt! :cool1:

Just what I was going to suggest. :thumbsup2 I also spray them with Shout (at least I think it's Shout :scratchin) as soon as I take them off and let it soak in for a little bit before washing. It seems to help keep the odor from settling in.

Hey all! Had a little kink in my training plan. I was diagnosed with severe back spasms on Wednesday. No stretching for another 4 days, No running for at least another 2 weeks! Had a disastrous half in Disneyland so I was hoping to train smarter and do better this time. My back is slowly getting better (ie today I can walk without crying), but it is not going fast enough! Good luck to all those getting their long runs in this weekend!

Today is a cross training day for me so I am just going to hit the gym later. I am waiting to see what the weather is actually going to be like tomorrow before deciding whether or not I am going to do another indoor run or go for a run in the neighborhood since its all paved where I am. And it's not really flooded here thankfully. But for safety reasons I am probably going to end up doing a short mile loop four times. Ah well at least I will get hills in (my area is one set of rolling hill). You stay safe!

Hi all! Had an absolutely fantastic run of 10 miles, plus another for warmup/cooldown, and feel great!! Couldn't have timed it better as it was a high of 70 today and felt like fall. FINALLY! Really excited about the run because I didn't push myself too much and managed to get 10 in 2 hours!! :cool1::cool1: Explored a new part of a park and had new music on my iPod and everything went perfect. The new Sauconys are so wonderful I can't even begin to say. Got a bit of a tear on one already, gonna wait and see if it gets worse before I go to the running store and show them.. maybe I can get some kind of discount on the second pair? pixiedust:

To all the folks out in Colorado, be safe!! Hugs and prayers to you all.

Since my run today I've been taking it easy keeping my cat company, and am having dinner with friends tonight. Think I might splurge and get steak to celebrate my first ever 10 mile run :) Hope everyone else has just as good luck with their long runs this weekend!

I need help from the experienced runners!! I set out today to do 9.5 miles, as per the Jeff Galloway training plan, but due to a couple of issues, I only made it a little over 7. The plan calls for 11 in two weeks...and I think you aren't supposed to increase your mileage by too much at once. So, do I turn the 4 for next weekend into another effort at 9.5, or just let it go and stick with the plan from here out.

Also, I have signed up for a 10k in two weeks. Mainly just to get some race-day experience for something more than a 5k. Obviously, that won't cover my miles that I need to do that day, so I thought I'd just keep going after I finished the race to get the full mileage in. However, my experience from today has me concerned about the heat (one of the issues). I would normally start between 5:30 and 6 am to avoid running in the full sun, but the race doesn't start until 8 am. I had thought about doing 5 miles first, then going to the race, but I'm afraid that will mess up my pacing and I'll be too tired to keep moving on the race course. I'm a little irritated that they have a 15-minue mile limit, and I'm slower than that right now. What do I do?? I'm not trying to make any records or anything, I just thought signing up for a race would help me get an idea of how fast I'm really going compared to my training pace. It was not an expensive race, so I've considered just not participating and doing my own thing.

Great job Kat73 :)

This will be my first half marathon EVER and I am SO happy to say it will be in Disney at the Wine and Dine! I remember seeing the marathon at Disney a few years ago and thinking WOW..I'd love to do a race in Disney...and now here I am!

Any tips on the Disney halfs? How much time is taken off do you think for some character photo stops? I definitely plan on doing a few character photo-ops :-) Cant wait! Counting down the days until race day!

Looking for help:
I signed up thru a travel agency for the Wine & Dine, and want to get discounted park ticket for my sister-- I have an annual pass (:banana:one more thing off my WDW bucket list! An annual pass!)
Because I went thru the TA, I was not emailed the code to buy direct thru RunDisney, but I can order thru her.
The kicker is runDisney will only ship the ticket, not allow pickup as WillCall: At a rate of $30 because I'm in Canada! That takes away a good chunk of the savings!

Would someone please message me the code?
(I don't think it contravenes Disboard rules.... I believe the process will confirm me as an entrant before I can complete the sale/pickup the ticket?)

Thanks

Aggie: I'd definitely say do the 10 k race in 2 wks time.....if you could, do part of your distance beforehand as a warmup (just whatever distance it usually takes you to get the kinks out!), and the rest after (call it your cooldown!).
If you start the race already warmed up (ever notice the fast runners running before a race?), the adrenaline around you will be a great boost to your own speed! You might surprise yourself with a new found race pace! I know I did!
And yes, it really is nice to have done the distance on official runs!
Good luck with it! Post your experience after!

It is SO nice outside!! 63 degrees and sunny with a gentle breeze. I want to run SOOOO bad, but DD10 and I have a 5K fun run tonight so I have to pace myself. I know that if I went out now, I'd probably go about 10 miles...it is perfect weather.

I did some more reading and research about the pre-race eating habits. I am also forgetting that this is also our "vacation" so I want to enjoy it a little. For us, dining is always a big part of our vacation, especially without the kids. Enjoying adult meals at adult resataurants is a huge part of the vacation. So why can I not make any ADR's???:confused3 I am planning on cancelling the two I have for race day. I had LeCellier at 4:10 (DH's choice) and Garden Grill for 6pm...that was my bad idea. That will leave me with exactly 2 ADR's over our 5-night trip...Sanaa for lunch on Sunday and Boma for breakfast on check-out day. Every time I want to plan something, I think about the fact that we don't want to be running around too much and I am not really sure where we will want to go each day. I'm not even sure which day we will go to the Expo or how much time it will take to get there, or how much time we will spend there....

On another note, I am having a lot of trouble encouraging DH with his running. He is so frustrated! Before his shoulder injury, he was able to run 9-10 miles at a sub-10 pace. Now, he says that his endurance is totally gone. He says he can't even run 4 miles without having to stop and walk. His goal has always been to run the entire 13.1 miles (and he has already done it once) and he is getting beyond frustrated. I've told him to try the run/walk intervals like me. He says that he is already doing that...sort of. I encouraged him to PLAN the walk intervals, not just walk when he gets tired. He says that once he starts walking, he has trouble getting back into running again so I told him to use longer run intervals. He is just so bent on running the entire way that he considers any training run a failure if he couldn't run the entire distance. He's the opposite of me! I can find the success in any run, and he is so frustrated, he finds the failures in all of his runs. I don't know how to slap him out of it!! He is the person who said he never wants to run in an organized race because if he can't win, why bother?:sad2: So, he decided that it is a "personal victory" to run a 1/2 Marathon, but now that he is questioning his ability to do it, he is reverting to the "why bother?" mentality.

I, on the other hand, have set into a nice training pattern that I really think will work out great:thumbsup2. I am trying to do a 12-minute pace so I do 4 minutes of walking and 8 minutes of running. That way, I know that I have to go at least 0.25 miles with each walk interval and at least 0.75 miles with each running interval. If I want to lengthen my run interval, I will make it 3 minutes of walking and 9 minutes of running. I have a "routine" that I do during my walk portions...catch breath for first 45 seconds...hit inhaler and breathe for 15 seconds...drink fluids during second minute and eat energy chew if needed...third minute is wipe off sweat, readjust clothing and accessories and mentally prepare for next run interval. I figured out that the 3-minute walk interval is the least I will do on the longer runs. I need all 3 minutes, and I really prefer 4. If I want to lengthen my run intervals, I could walk for 4 and then run for 20 and repeat, but I doubt I would be any faster...just more tired. With this plan, I am hitting a walk interval at every mile. This puts me in perfect position to take pictures of each mile marker without having it mess up my running interval. It will also FORCE me to slow down. It's no good if I run the first 4-5 miles under 12 minutes and then have to crawl across the finish line and feel like crap for 2 more days:sick:.

Oops...sorry for the ramblingpopcorn::...time to get some work done:laundy:.

Kat - awesome job on the 10 miles! :cool1: I knew you'd like those Sauconys. I'd take the shoes back to the store just so they can see the damage and see what they say. Most reputable places are happy to take care of their customers so they keep coming back. ::yes::

My max mileage before last year's race was 11 due to IT issues. I ended up overtraining by going too far too fast and got sick a week before. By race day I was fine and had no trouble at all with the distance. The best advice I can give is LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. ::yes:: Like everything else, what works for someone else, won't necessarily work for you. That's the beauty of the WISH'ers: there are so many opinions about training and all it's aspects, that sooner or later you'll hit upon something that works great for you!

And to all the Colorado folks, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you all. Hang in there!:love::love::love::love:

Blasted ankle is troubling me a lot so I cut my long run short yesterday, completing only 4 of 10 miles. Today I got up and did 7 at a 10:15 pace because I needed it mentally. It hurt but I am happy that I got over that hurdle. Just going to up my distance by a mile each week and I should be fine on race day as long as things don't get any worse. Going to have my PT do some manipulations this week to try to alleviate whatever is going on with the ankle before it knocks my back out of alignment. This body wasn't built for 13 miles, apparently ;).

We are getting more rain so I am bracing myself for some muddy maintenance runs this week...

Substitute the 10k as your long run and call it good! Do not feel the need to make up the miles in front of or behind the race.

A race is a great idea. It will give you a feel for pacing when folks around you may be moving faster than you. Start off in the appropriate corral and try to click off 15- 15:15 minute intervals. It may be a little faster than you have trained but it is very doable in a race. Keep calm and relaxed once the gun fires. If this is the race that I recall, if you fall behind the pace, you have sidewalks to move over to for any remaining distance left.

You have two options on what to do with the miles for that week. The first is to just skip the weekend and run the 13 in two weeks. The other is to run your 11 when the 13 was due and just keep the miles pulled back that interval for the remainder of the training period. You will do fine with either option.

Good luck and have a great race.

There is something on the male side of the gene pool that will allow him to do so much better than it seems like he could go. For the record, You are correct in the plan and take walk intervals earlier and regularly. I know it seems counter intuitive, but running til one breaks is a mental failure and it can take one so much more time to get back on run. I am betting if he takes off at a decent pace in the race he will go much further than he thought he could. I am betting it will be the WWoS and the multiple running surfaces that cause the mental break.

With regard to your r/w intervals... it took me a couple times to figure out what you are doing. As I have said numerous times, we are all an experiment of one... your intervals are kind of long but your reasoning is sound. I would not push the intervals longer at this point before the race.

Have a great weekend

DD10 and I participated in a 5K fun run (untimed) last night. What a hoot!! The theme was Totally Rad 80's and the costumes were HILARIOUS:rotfl:. I couldn't get my Garmin to find a signal so I used my Nike+ only. DD wanted to stay with me and do 3/2 intervals. I really wanted to stick with the 4/2 that I'd been using on my shorter runs, but I compromised and set the interval timer at 3.5/2. DD10 did great:cool1:! She kept up really well and never once slowed down during a run interval. She'd look at my armband and say, "Only 40 more seconds?....I can do that." After the second run interval, she said she wished she had her inhaler. I let her use mine and she didn't need it for the rest of the race. We finished completing 3.03 miles at an 11:30 pace! I am happy for me and ecstatic for DD! After we were done, two ladies came up to us, handed us each a bottle of water and said, "We were following your pace. You guys rocked! We aren't runners and we were able to keep right up with you and stay strong. Thanks!" I started telling them about the interval timer and the method and they said they will definitely try it:hippie:.

We have one more 5K this year...that was #9 out of our goal of 10. I did a 10K last week and my friend told me to count it as 2, but I'd rather do another 5K. I remember the first one, back in February. I remember really struggling to stay in the 12:30 range. Now, it seems like sub-12's are the norm for me. It's inspiring to see how far I've come and it assures me that I can DEFINITELY do the 13.1 in 7 weeks:cheer2:.

I did the You Go Girl half Marathon today.
I rocked it 2:50:01:cool1:
Race started off with Thunder and lightening and rain for the first 30 minutes. Then just overcast skies. Temps were perfect 61-64 degrees.

My only other half was the Disneyland half at 3:07(took lots of pictures and it was hot and humid) My goal was to be just under 3 hours.:cool1:

This will be my first half marathon EVER and I am SO happy to say it will be in Disney at the Wine and Dine! I remember seeing the marathon at Disney a few years ago and thinking WOW..I'd love to do a race in Disney...and now here I am!

Any tips on the Disney halfs? How much time is taken off do you think for some character photo stops? I definitely plan on doing a few character photo-ops :-) Cant wait! Counting down the days until race day!

Erica

First Half Marathon here too! I watched DH run the WDW Half in 2010 and it didn't even remotely cross my mind that I would EVER be able to do the same. Here I am 3 years later. And I'm even on track to beat his time! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

I'm going to be a Debbie Downer here and say that I don't stop for characters. I've run two races: the WDW 5K in 2013 and the DLR 10K two weeks ago and the lines for characters in both races were wicked long. I'm not going to break my momentum for a character pic. Now I did for a pic of myself in front of the Castle but that's different.....I didn't have to wait in line for that one.

Think about your pace and whether or not you can afford to stop for photo-ops. There ARE stories out there about people getting swept while waiting for a character. :scared::scared::scared:

Adding on to that I've never gotten swept while waiting for a character but I had a close call at the inaugural Tinkerbell! Waited nearly 40 minutes in line for a photo. Came within a minute of being swept. I put on a burst of speed and had no problems from there on out. Nearly gave my Mom a panic attack, but the photo was so worth it. It's definitely a danger if you spend too much time waiting for a character. And why you need to keep a close eye on your watch and how far ahead you are of the last corral.

I stopped at Princess of this year but that was because it was a lost cause race for me. I started getting nauseous  between mile 3 and mile 4 because of the heat during my run intervals. At that point I realized I wasn't going to be able to keep in front of the pacers and decided I might as well enjoy it while I can get as many photos as I can. So I made a couple of character stops. I made it all the way to the half way point (and through the castle which became my goal when I started having problems) before I got swept.

That's not my normal race plan lately since I am a slow runner and with my health issues I can't really wait in really long lines without getting in danger of sweeping. I am hoping in about a year or so after the bariatric surgery my pace will have enough of an improvement that I might have enough time to maybe stop for one or two photos like I used too. Some of my favorite character interactions have happened during races (WDW Marathon 2012 featured a Navine asking me for Pixie Dust and Princess 2012 had a Prince Eric who actually remembered me from the day before and asked how I was doing (I visited MK the day before)) and I do miss having the time to stop but I want the medal more than the character interactions.

So I went and did an unofficial 5k today. It was supposed to be a 4 miler. But when I went a bit too long on my run intervals and tired myself out I shorted it up. I actually just waited for the Run Zombies app mission to finish and it finished right at the 5k mark so it works.

But it was one of my faster 5ks at around 48 minutes (had to stop once to tighten shoes and another time to catch breath for a minute, as I said before, went too long on run intervals) in recent memories so hey it all works! And I'll try to amp it up to 4 miles next weekend. I want to at least squeeze a 10k somewhere between now and the Wine and Dine. But I don't want to do it too soon or else it might end up being counterproductive after doing Dumbo.

My main problem is going to be balancing mileage when I'm walking around Disneyland (I'm headed back at the end of the month for another round of doctor's appointments, and then again at the end of October for doctor's appointments and fun). Because that's a lot of miles within itself. Maybe just do short runs on those days.
