The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

First great job on completing your run in great condition.

Let's talk shoes....

First, the blistering may well be from many other thing besides a tired pair of shoes. So, how many miles do you have on your current pair? If you do not know and they are older than 6-9 months, I would agree that a new pair are in order. Have you had any issues with feet, ankles, knees, hips (other than the recent blister)? Also, were you fitted in a running store? If you were not previously fitted or you have had joint issues, I would definitely hit a running store for a fitting. Otherwise, the same make and model should still serve you well. Note that if your manufacturer has changed the model up since your last purchase, I would again think of hitting a running store.

I would suggest a post run recovery meal/snack if you are not already doing this. The body begs for its stores to be restocked and having 2-300 Kcal of protein/carbs within the first hour post run is a great start.

Thanks for the advice! I was fitted in running store. I have had the sneakers for a year now. They have mostly "walking " miles on them. I walk about 15 miles a week. Started running in late march ( about 6 miles a week ) and then started the Galloway training on July 9.
I noticed about 2 weeks ago the cushioning seemed to be gone and then on the 8 mile run the bottoms on my feet were on fire! And I got a small blister. No other pain to speak of ( knock on wood)!
Friday is my birthday- so new sneakers for me!
Thanks coach!

I generally purchase 2 pairs when I change models (or have 2-3 pair to rotate) One of the best ways I know to tell if a pair is needing replaced is to run in a new pair. It will be night and day when you compare the two rides.

Start logging your miles and consider replacing shoes in the 500-750 mile range.

Oh, Happy BDay

For the Elixer revision it is possible, though unlikely. I would look for to a tightness in the hip girdle area that is beginning to tell you to stretch a little better/differntly.

That's what I have been doing- physio and lots of left side stretching for tightness! I am becoming a stretching expert!

Dumbo done and under my belt. Onwards to Florida for attempt number two at a Coast to Coast. Hoping the weather doesn't get to badly to me this time as it did at Princess. I think the cold-heat (coming from CO) didn't help since I handled yesterday's humidity fairly well. Now just got to recover from this, try to deal with a silly doctor's office who I am not sure if I am sure if they will acknowledge my water weight from DOMS and thus being up and not down in weight since August, and keep on trekking.

Question for the experienced Wine and Diners is their a built in clearance zone where they stop sweeping runners completely? An area where they stop sweeping? I know they stop sweeping at mile 10 hear at Disneyland, and I saw online they stopped at mile 9 at last year's Tower of Terror. So I'm tempted to think they might have a clearance zone here somewhere that's why I'm asking.

In general, just before mile 9 one enters DHS backstage and remains off public roadways for the duration of the race. From there the common thought is that no sweeping will occur. I urge caution in relying on a 'safe zone' for any race as Disney has swept past this point for more than one runner on this forum. I was surprised when they told me of this, but it has and may well happen to anyone who falls too far off pace at any time, any where.

Thanks. About the later part yeah I realize that and its not like I drop pace because I want to stop and take pictures usually. Usually its because I have something else going on (arch pain, problems with heat, etc.). I'm hoping I don't have any close encounters with the pace balloons/flags (they were flags at Disneyland this time for some reason) this time but in case I do the fact that there is a general area where they stop sweeping helps me relax just a little.

Am I the only one who doesn't needed/want to snack on anything for a half marathon? For a full I eventually need something but only after 16-18 miles.

I don't eat anything. Didn't do it for the marathon last year either. But for w&d my mantra is "x miles to creme brûlée!" I loved that cold coke at the end!

No long run for me this weekend (next week is 8) but I did a "magic mile" (timed mile test) and I did my fastest ever- 9:20! I know that may not be much to many runners, but for me, I'm ecstatic! It's 28 seconds faster than my previous PR (back in march) and when i started this running thing, I never EVER thought I could break 10:00, let alone 9:20!

As for hydration, I find that if I hydrate properly the day before a long run, that can make a huge difference for me. I have Gatorade or power ade throughout the day a little and I feel so much better after my run than when I don't do this.

Edited: oops. Just realized topic was food, not drink. I eat clif shot bloks if I'm going to be out more than 70 min (for me that's any run over 6 miles), anything less than and I usually don't. Last year was my rookie year and I didn't experiment too much bc I was so nervous about completing the long runs that I'd never done before. Now that I know I can go the distance, I might try some different strategies and take more chances to see what might make me feel stronger at the finish line.... Party... Lol

When I'm running I experiment with food cause I'm just a novice. It's kind of like Alice and the bits of mushroom: a nibble here, a nibble there... "Oh, that's just right!"

... And one must always be prepared for the BEER at the end of the race!

Did the DLR 10K as my "long run" this weekend! Back on the road tomorrow (or maybe Wed) for my maintenance.

DLR festivities were good but, man, there was a lot of cluster#$%&-ing going on. They need to learn a few things about how FL handles that many people.

I saw photos online--it looked insane at the expo! What does everyone think of the new medals??

LOVE the new W&D medal! I wasn't too keen on those little charm thingies hanging off last year's medal...

Went out for 5.5 yesterday and for the first time ever, I felt sick to my stomach when I got back. :scared: Even though I took it slow and took water mixed with Sport Mio, it was so darn hot and humid, I just couldn't cool down. That's what I get for being lazy and not heading out until after 10am. :faint: Needless to say, I just felt "off" the rest of the day. :crazy2: However, now that a lousy training day is over, I'm looking forward to really (but slowly) amping up on the mileage and speed. :cool1: Not worried about the distance at all, just trying not to freak out to much about the knee. :scared1: Really concentrating on building up leg and glute strength now which will hopefully alleviate alot of the issue. :thumbsup2

What do you guys do when you start feeling overheated?

I understand having races on both coasts and that the logistics are different, but this is my 3rd year running at Disneyland (4th @ WDW) and they still have the same issues. I understand that the entire race can't be on property and somethings they need to relinquish control of, but something as simple as enough water cups or Tylenol? If it weren't for the name on the recovery box, I'd swear they were run by different companies. And I won't get into the Expo. Just thankful we have a Wide World of Sports to hold ours at. :worship::worship:

Not sure about how I feel about the medal change. It's cute. But I liked the classic one. Maybe they are trying to make it more recognizable as a Disney race.

Anyone ever have one of those days where you feel like you can do anything???

ME TOO!!

I went out today with one goal....complete a long run. The longest I have ever gone so far is 10.43 miles and I have only hit the double-digit distance twice. Both times, I was at or above 13:00/mile which is OK for me. I have a 10K on Saturday (my first one!) so I knew that today would be my only opportunity to try for a long distance. I didn't want to do a long run on Thursday.

I set my intervals to the 8/4 setting and had it repeat 10 times. I figured if I finished it, I would be in the 8-10 mile range. I took off and felt fantastic:cool1:. I kept my pace BELOW 12:00 through NINE miles! It wasn't until mile 10 that my pace finally broke 12 minutes.

I just kept going...my legs felt like concrete, my feet were sore, my hip was achy, but I knew I could push on. When I crossed the "finish line" (aka my driveway), I had completed 12.03 miles:yay:. I checked my pace, knowing that I was absolutely dragging over the last 2 miles and to my utter amazement, I finished with a 12:29 pace:dance3:. Hot dog!! THREE goals completed...12 miles...sub-13:00 pace...and my fastest 10K (1:13:33).

DH and I set out at the same time for our runs but he likes a different route than me and he is faster and doesn't do intervals so we do not run together. When I got home, he was already showered and dressed. I figured it is just because he is so much faster than me...nope...he only went 9 miles:laughing:. Is it wrong that I now feel superior:snooty:?

Well, after that run, I feel I deserve some Applebee's steak and shrimppopcorn::. It's on the 500-calorie menu so I won't completely destroy everything I just burned off.

Go Kristenrice, Go Kristenrice! Congrats on all those accomplishments! Awesome! :cheer2::cool1::cheer2::cool1::thumbsup2

Been sitting back a tad lately. I had to have a biopsy last week so I was told no exercise, even walking for 3 days. :crazy2: When it was over I was ready to go for my run. I was at a friends house and she was going to go with me, but we were in RI, where it POURED this weekend. So I was going to do it when I got home. Instead, my phone (that I track all my runs with) ended up in the pool:furious::sad1: My son was in the pool and got me wet with a water gun(I was in normal street clothes). To be silly, since I was wet anyway, I figured I would just jump in and 'get him' for getting me wet. Well forgot my phone was in my back pocket. :scared: Been trying the rice trick, but the phone is not very reliable now. So I need to get a new phone. But I can't go running because I have no idea how far I would go or my pace. :confused3:lmao: So that is high on the priority list for a new phone....just so I can go running! :thumbsup2

What do you guys do when you start feeling overheated?

1. Gatorade/Powerade. Before, during, after. I used to feel sick a LOT after hot runs and now I reach for the powerade immediately and it definitely helps.

2. Cut the run short. Seriously, I have had 2 of these training runs this summer b/c I timed them poorly (mid-day), or the weather was just not what I expected. When slowing down and drinking water/sports drink and taking walk breaks does not help enough, sometimes you just have to stop.

Good luck not freaking out about your knee. :grouphug: You'll be fine! just keep building slowly.

PS - I should take some of my own advice. I'm trying not to freak out about how my knee is going to handle my 10k on Sept 29. Now that it's only 26 days away, I'm really getting nervous! I've never done a 10k. I wouldn't have done this one either so close to W&D but I really want to move up corrals.

That is an ENORMOUS accomplishment. Congratulations! I think I say this all the time but I like your detailed run recaps. I feel like I am right there rooting for you to hit a new milestone. Also, I feel that kinship that comes with having an infuriatingly faster and less trained DH running as well. Way to go on killing him with your superior mileage!!

Went to PT instead of running this morning. I was so excited to tell her about my back not hurting but then she managed to find the spots where I was storing up the pain and... ouch!!! Anyway, ready to run tomorrow morning. Also, the ankle pain I am having probably isn't shoe related but arthritis. Yuck! I need to trade up to a new model because my body is on an accelerated aging schedule, it seems.

New album I've been wanting came out today so I have a couple of new tunes to look forward to on the running mix in the morning.

Go Kristenrice, Go Kristenrice! Congrats on all those accomplishments! Awesome! :cheer2::cool1::cheer2::cool1::thumbsup2

Oh my goodness, Diana, I hope everything is okay. Love that you had a spontaneously fun parenting moment but so sad that you ended up sacrificing your phone. I hope you can get a new one soon. I would find it very difficult to run without tracking either. Could you still do a tried and tested route with a watch as a poor substitute? I have a reliable 5k route that I would run if I was in that situation. Though it would break my heart not to hear my little RunKeeper coach letting me know my pace every 1/2 mile.
